The 5.7 TPI IROC-Z is a great car! I just drove mine 160 miles this afternoon. Around 150 miles on the motorway and then stuck in London traffic for about the last 10 miles, the car never missed a beat and is all stock and all original. I know I probably shouldn't be able to daily an 89 car but it's absolutely fine and perfectly reliable.

Riveting! I bought a brand new Z28 fresh off the showroom floor way back in 94’. Amazing that my 20’ GTI with FWD and a turbo four cylinder is demonstrably quicker and has far superior driving dynamics compared to my old V8 powered rear wheel drive Camaro. But I miss it I do.

I had an 89 that ran like a top. Sold it and bought a 1996 LT4 Corvette, but that IROC was a sweetheart, dude. Fantastic car. You must be the ONLY swinging dick in Swinging London with an IROC. You must need a club to beat the pussy off of you when you are driving that beast lol

@@michaelthebarbarian3380 Lol, no unfortunately I haven’t had that monster in many moons and no, I would NOT trade it for a GTI if I still had it. BUT, I will say this- for a FWD compact hatchback the VW is insanely engineered and would absolutely outperform my old Camaro in every category that matters, from acceleration to handling to fuel economy.

Had a 87 iroc same red 4 barrel carburetor 305 later put a 350 in and a transmission out of a Corvette pretty much the same transmission 700R4 love that car and then I had a 91 Z28 same red the only thing I did with that was get a used 96 Caprice classic police interceptor transmission put in because the overdrive went 140 Speedo was nothing to bury in that car it was easy unlike the 87 IROC that only had an 85 mph speedometer I could bury that in second gear when I put the new motor and trans in that loved both

I've known MotorWeek as my best friend ever since I saw it for the first time I believe it was on Channel 20 or 11 way back in the 80s. Yes I saw this show and was instantly in love with the 1986 Camaro Sports coupe which had a V6 engine, automatic transmission , White with a rust brown interior. it's engine snarled through twin tail pipes. Boy I really miss my first car!!! And what a blast!!! I loved the IROC and the IROC racing series when it started with all racing IROC race cars!!!

They should've offered that 5.7 V8 as an option in Monte Carlo SS. If they were so concerned with competing with the 'vette, they coulda upcharged a premium for the upgrade. Being it was an "SS", it really should've had an optimum power plant available, not just the 180 hp 5.0L they came with.

There was a guy in my town that had a 1985/86 Monte SS....he bought a ZZ high performance crate 350 (450 hp 450 torque at crank) and put a vortech supercharger on it...had it dynoed at 600 hp to the wheels....that solved the 180 hp problem.

and Ford didn't force you to buy an automatic transmission. As a 1986 Gt owner, I will admit this generation of F body was finally designed to be a Z28 first and a Nova second, while the Foxbody was still a Fairmont design worked up to be performance car (or luxury car, I had a 1986 turbo Thunderbird too)

@albertgaspar627

@@annathemaanderson4448 True, I just wish back in the 1970's GM had used the 307 rather than the 305 as their corporate 5.0 litre engine...then they'd have the rod length to stroke ratio the 327 was valued for.
@lb9gta307
@lb9gta307 6 ай бұрын
When GM came out with the L69 5L it was beating Ford's 302 and the later LB9 5L was right on their door when optioned with the T5 and dual cat exhaust. But yeah, Ford hot rodded a light economy car that, performance wise, was a one trick pony while GM built a dedicated platform with all round performance in mind that ended up being heavier.
@lb9gta307
@lb9gta307 6 ай бұрын
@@albertgaspar627 the automatic only thing was because the T5 was just too weak for the torque, weight, and grip. They built a couple test cars with the Corvette's ZF 6 speed paired to hot L98s and and meaner but that would have made the already more expensive cars in the segment even more expensive. The 305 made more sense as a production engine since it shared essentially the same crank and same rods with the 350.

I remember beating an Iroc-Z. Probably the 305 engine. Also beat a Vette. Not sure of the year. Early 80s model. And I remember beating a Buick T-Type,, by a nose. The good 'ol days.

@@kessler1571 Early 80s, maybe. No way you’re touching a mid to late 80s T-Type or Grand National. There’s a reason why there were “I eat Vettes for breakfast” bumper stickers all over the place, lol. My buddy’s dad had one on his ‘86 GN. And what year Vette did you beat? Certainly not one from the same time period.

The 5.7TPI is a very powerful engine when you reprogram the ECM and make a few minor changes… Modern cars do not have “air pumps” and much better computer programming.
