There’s just something about Mazdas. The brand has a way of providing the soul of the Miata in all of their cars; something you either get or you don’t. Most recently they’ve been focusing on increasing refinement, comfort, and luxury. Despite some carryover hardware, Mazda considers this 2019 Mazda3 the start of a new 4th generation.

I wonder why MotorWeek was critical of the Mazda 3's 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds? For a compact economy car, that result seems slightly better than average.

It does, but remember, it's got a 2.5 liter engine, where the competition has 2.0 NA or 1.5 turbos. I thought it could use shorter gearing in the lower range, but then, I don't make cars.

@@davidm5707 It is possible that MotorWeek was thinking of the 1.5T found in the upper trim Honda Civic, but it's also possible that they were referring to the lack of a Mazdaspeed variant of the 3. Your conjecture is as good as mine.

@@davidm5707 MotorWeek wasn't critical of the "feel" of the 3's 0-60 mph acceleration, it was critical of the empirical measure of the elapsed time. I have had my 2019 3 AWD Hatch with preferred package since July. I love it! It does everything I expected it to do very well. My only little complaints after three months are: no remote hatch release, no auto-dimming rear view mirror and it has tiny gas tank (a little over 12 gallons). The 0-60 number may not be the best, but in sport mode acceleration FEELS great! That’s what matters to most driving enthusiasts, anyway! I can feel the AWD kick in during spirited driving and it inspires confidence. I’m excited to see how the car handles in our northeastern winter. Kudos to Mazda for a great job on the new 3!

In 2019, a fairly mainstream Mazda 3 Hatch "lumbers it's way to 60 in 7.5s" - I've seen the 3's 0-60 between 7.0s and 7.6s - depending who is driving. Back in 2001, the Lexus IS 300 (priced at $34,500 as tested) was lauded for it's rather quick 0-60 time of 7.6s. Now the 2023 Mazda 3 Turbo hits 0-60 in 5.6s priced at $35,500 as tested.

Well, at least in the US there is no optional engine. I like that actually, not having to go to a higher trim to get a better engine. And yes, I consider 7.5 sec to 60 a very good time. I think the reason in might feel slow to the tester is that there is not a lot of low end torque, unlike some turbos. Two things I dont like are the non-touch information system and the horrible visibility of the hatchback. And of course for the price of the car, it should have independent rear suspension.

Don't hold your breath waiting for the return of the Mazdaspeed subbrand. Sporty cars are very niche in today's U.S. auto market, so it'd be unlikely that Mazda would be able to make a profit by investing in a resurrected Speed 3. Also note that Ford no longer sells the Fiesta ST and Focus ST in North America, which should tell you about the current demand for hot hatches.

@@ECEAaronXavierLobo Nice looking car but it's junk. I bought this car new and had to get rid of it after three months because it had so many problems. The rear view mirror kept falling out because of the cheap glue being used. The driver's side seat control fell out because the plastic tabs would not hold it in place, also the seat frames are made of horrible pot-metal. The rear seats would not latch back up because the wire mechanism inside the rear seats failed. The entire dash board and glove box area had very annoying rattles because the wiring loom was not routed and secured properly. The glove box and sun glasses holder is made out of cheap thin soda bottle plastic. The hood prop is made out of a coat hanger. The C pillar is paper thin that you can put your index finger on it and dent it in with very little pressure. The headlights have a balcony design and allows the snow to accumulate in the winter blocking your light at night. The ergonomics of getting in and out are awful due to the roof line. The software is poorly programmed and gives too many false positive alert when using the safety features or radar cruise control. The cylinder deactivation does nothing to make the engine better and only complicates it further. And although I had a full warranty because it was a new car, Mazda was unable to fix any of these issues because all of the materials used are sub-standard and very cheap and no warranty can fix that. Skip this car and buy something better.

Could be a little quicker. Lightweight wheels and tires (unsprung rotation weight), with a filter and exhaust will give it an added kick. I'll wait to get my forged wheels next spring, with just a filter and better and lighter P Zero (4lbs lighter on each corner vs OE Toyo), my car feels a quicker and handles a lot better. I use 93 octane and you can feel the car stutters less on take off when it's hunting for higher gears. Better response and acceleration when passing semi trucks up steep hills, especially with the AC on and managed to get 38.6 mpg on a 50 mile trip. 13:1 compression ratio should benefit from 93 octane. Many testers got it from 6.9-7.2 for the AWD hatch, but they use a 1ft rollout which MW doesn't do.

That said it will never be at a mechanic since i do everything myself.. if you can’t work on cars yourself, buy a toyota corolla IM, while the Mazda is good looking, arguably better looking than the Toyota, the Mazda quality has been spotty, like the Japanese equivalents of volkswagen

2WIREG I don’t drive automatic transmission cars, i wanted a manual, i could have gotten an accord but i really wanted something fun to drive, i could have gotten a preowned mustang but wanted a place to put wood for home improvement stuff the passenger seat will fold flat on the GTI so i can actually fit 8ft pieces of 2x4 in the car with the hatch closed, ive done that now multiple times, or can fit 6ft lengths with the hatch closed and a passenger.. I’m in a midwestern state of the USA. VW actually can still sell tdi vw’s here due to no emissions laws, and yes you are right no awd, but then mazda didn’t offer awd with a manual so that was never an option. I would have bought an impreza if i wanted awd and a manual, or a wrx if i wanted or rather needed that, but i have no need for awd, fwd or rwd is fine in the mild snow we get, though it does get very cold here we really don’t get much snow. The Mazda was way more expensive and I actually got more options i felt were important, yes it’s premium fill, but i really don’t care, i can use the thousands i saved not buying the Mazda for gas for the next 5 years.

Other than looks, this car is outclassed on virtually every front (speed, fuel economy, horsepower, price, etc.). I mean, you can get a 201 hp Civic Si sedan for $25K or a lot less since they aren't selling. Mazda is playing a very, very dangerous game here, and they simply are no longer competitive.

The Civic may have higher fuel economy but the 1.5T in the Civic and CRV have major oil dilution issues. Even if it didn't have them, the longevity on that engine would be questionable and hasn't been proven yet. Small turbo engines are always under a lot of stress compared to a bigger NA engine. The Skyactiv engines have been in production since 2013 and have been bulletproof, they are tried and true. The 3rd gen Mazda 3s had much higher MPG ratings because they were 300lbs lighter and had the smaller 2.0 Skyactiv on the lower trims. Mazda should have stuck with the lightweight formula.

@steve9377
@steve9377 4 жыл бұрын
James Raley The Focus ST is nowhere near double the horsepower. It only puts out 252hp at thats using 93 octane. The only way you would get close to the same mpg is not actually using that power and keeping it out of boost.
@jamesoraley
@jamesoraley 4 жыл бұрын
@@steve9377, true, not near double the HP, my math was admittedly a bit off, but I consistently get 25mpg average in mixed City driving (expressways and surface streets) on 93 octane, even when I put my foot in it from time-to-time. With the 2.0L EcoBoost you can have either Eco or Boost, not both, but I'm still impressed by the MPG possible for the level of performance available, especially when compared to newer cars, that's my point.

Kevin Wright - Lets see: Rocker arm recall, head restraint recall, rear view mirror falling off recall, loose lug nuts from the factory recall... Have you been following this car at all? It’s a mess; a quality control nightmare. No one is cross-shopping one of these with an A3. They cross-shop with the usual suspects of Civic and Corolla, which are absolutely slaughtering it. And it gets better. According to the stats, these 4th gens are selling even WORSE than the outgoing 2018 model, which is almost unheard of for a clean-sheet redesign. I’ve seen maybe 5 outside of a Mazda dealership lot. You can cover your ears and shout, but this car is a dud and Mazda seems to be a rudderless ship at this point.
@kevinW826
@kevinW826 4 жыл бұрын
Drive DB7 never heard any of these up here. Obviously it’s only the Mexican built ones with the issues. At least Mazda in the states is doing something whereas GM or FCA couldn’t care less when it comes to recalls. As for the lugnuts, that was their third party supplier who screwed up so that problem is fixed long ago. I would still take a Mazda over any compact car.

nsbioy of course the GTI is faster, but for reliability I would take the Mazda, as I have not had any issues with mine. Of course the STI is faster than both, but it comes with a whole list of other issues. A buddy of mine use to be a Subaru mechanic and owned an STI, he would rather own a NA Subaru over a turboed one. His wife drives a manual Forester with the NA 2.5. But I digress, I have driven the GTI, lots of fun for around $30,000 Canadian. A guy I work with has a modified 2010 GTI with 200,000 kms. But in 2 feet of snow, neither beats a truck with ground clearance. Yes I live north of the border.

The 2019 Mazda3 is not what you think it is. I bought one and had to get rid of it after 2,500 miles. Here is a list of what went wrong. The rear view mirror glass fell out while I was driving. The drivers side seat control panel fell off. The lugs were not tightened up from the factory where it was assembled. The rear seats will not latch back into place. The dashboard on the passenger side has a very annoying rattle. The drivers side arm rest is of no use because it is too low. You also can't rest your arm on the top of the door panel because it is too high. You can't see out the back due to the low rear roofline (removing the rear head rests helps). Getting in and out is for a contortionist- the ergonomics are awful. The safety systems are more annoying than helpful and not to be trusted. There is no cargo net inside the rear hatch. The engine has cylinder deactivation and it does not improve the mpg. The mpg is good but not great. Open the glove box and you will see it is made of soda bottle plastic. The leather on the steering wheel feels very cheap and will probably begin peeling off in a year or two. The C pillar feels like a sheet of aluminum foil. Press your finger on it and see it just collapse. This car looks interesting for sure, but it made with substandard materials and no warranty can fix that. Shop around, there are much better cars out there for the money.

The VW has been the only flawless one thus far within the first two years of ownership. The mazdas were all giving me issues within the first two years of ownership from new.
