I remember back in 1995 when I got out of the penitentiary our local Ford dealer in Knoxville TN had a fresh out program where you got a new ‘95 escort with auto and air for $9,995 plus fees. You could use your $100.00 gate check for your down payment. Ford Credit finances the deal and the dealer held the recourse. Thus was a great opportunity to provide convicts with reliable transportation to parole. I remember the commercial saying “This little jewel will get you there and it won’t get you violated.” Unfortunately the program only lasted 3 years.

Tool0GT92, No, it means “Grand Touring”. That means a fine ride on long trips but also a good handling car. Ive had the most fun driving less powerful cars with good suspensions such as an 1994 BMW 318i 5-speed. I did add HD Bilstein struts on all 4 corners, and M3 sway bars front and rear! Now having said all this, I did also add an supercharger not turbo from Atlanta Supercharger. This was very streetable but led to instantaneous throttle response even from off idle. Horsepower went from 138 stock to 250 supercharged. THAT shocked a lot of M3 E36 owners! LOL

Eh, it means the sportier trim level. Fast of course is relative. In the early 90's, most mustangs and camaros were 15 second cars. So an Escort GT that could run high 15s was pretty dang quick. For what it's worth, I had an LX-e, the 4 door version of the GT and ran better times in Denver than this test did at sea level. Ran about 1/2 second and 1.5-2.5mph faster than the 99-00 Civic Si did.

If I am correct, Motor Trend had the Escort GT 5 speed in 91 or 92 doing 0-60 in 7.9 seconds. The reason I remember this is because the Capri XR2 did a similar number at 7.4 seconds. I thought at the time, they had the same engine, but was wrong. After a quick lookup on Google, various reviews show this car doing 0-60 times in 7.9 or 8 seconds.
@TheOzthewiz4 жыл бұрын
The car magazines ALWAYS got better 0-60times than the "regular" publications like Consumer Reports and probably MW. The reason: the factory provided "doctored" versions of "stock" cars to the car magazines so reviews were more "favorable", even the magazine editors admitted that the cars supplied by the factory probably were modified (internally) . For me, the only reviews that I would believe came from Consumer Reports, since their "test" cars were purchased of a dealer's lot just like you or I would purchase. Case in point: back in '80, I read a test of a Chevy Citation X-11 v6 4-speed manual, which appeared in "Car and Driver" that had a 0-60 time of 9.2 seconds. I was so impressed by the performance (seemed like a rocket ship in 1980 for a compact), so I ordered one. After a few "stop light Grands Prix, I suspected that a "stock" X-11 did NOT perform anywhere near that of the C&D test. This was confirmed by a review in Consumer Reports AFTER I had purchased the car, they got a 0-60 time of 12.1seconds!!! As a matter of fact, the C&D 1980 car with 120HP got the SAME 0-60 time as their 1981 X-11 that had 140HP( chevy added dual exhaust, along with higher CR and bigger valves, along with more agressive cam profiles) rated engine. To sum this up, I don't put much faith in the "performance numbers" that the car mags publish because the cars are supplied by the factory to be reviewed by magazines that will be read by millions of car enthusiasts. For me, the only TRUE test will be found in Consumer Reports, on cars that CR has purchased from a dealer's lot!!!
@matthewgaines104 жыл бұрын
@@TheOzthewiz Do you have proof of such an allegation? I think not. Consumer Reports just had less skilled people at performing speed tests. The magazine's tended to have people who knew how to get the most out of vehicle and a launch. Torque braking, dropping the clutch, slipping the clutch, or whatever it took to get the fastest times. Most magazine testers and reviewers actually attended performance driving schools. CR employed engineers and technicians. Few of their staff were actual car enthusiasts. Any joe can verify the numbers on a production car so it was stupid to tamper with cars to produce better numbers.

Mazda is definitely my favorite brand...I've owned 10 so far and counting. I like both these and the Tracer (and BG chassis car really), but if I had a choice I'd pick the Protege LX...I always dug it's mini W124 greenhouse. I found it a little odd that they tested the the 1.9 version earlier with the manual and the sportier GT with the automatic...seems kind of backwards to me. It's crazy how much performance the automatic sucked out of it, to the point where the 88 hp CVH with the manual was faster. It's not surprising though, having driven several Mazdas from this era both manual and automatic I can say that the manual completely changes the character of them, moreso than other brands from the era.

All depends on how you take care of it. I had a 94 escort gt and it had no rust when I got rid of it in 06. I bought it used in Illinois in 99. Moved back to the upper peninsula of Michigan in 02. Drove it all winter long. My 94 escort lx I had also no rust when I got rid of it. Only had it 2 years but I bought it in the upper peninsula of Michigan. My parents now bought a brand new 96 f150. Had it till 02 traded it in at 145,000 miles not one spot of rust on it. In fact my parents have kept all their vehicles rust free and they drive them all winter long. Got to wash them once a week during winter more if needed with a under body wash. Wax twice a year. My vehicle now a 08 escape yea has rust but bought it with rust unfortunately. Hard to find a rust free used vehicle.

can't believe this car was tested with the automatic instead of the 5 speed, if this car had the 5 speed it would've easily broke the 0-60mph times in the low to mid 8 second range.

Get the Ford with the quite decent Mazda engine. I did the same with my totally uncool '88 Mercury Tracer.

I also had an '88 Mercury Tracer. Bought it used in summer of '88 before my junior year of high school. The automatic transmission died in the 60-70K range.

In Australia this car was sold as a Ford Laser (same goes for the Mercury Tracer). There 3 door was known as the Laser TX3, Then there was the TX3 Turbo FWD and the top of the range model was the TX3 turbo AWD. Ot was actually a great performance Ford, but built in Mazda's factory in Japan, alongside the Mazda 323 Familia turbo twin. This model ended its sales in late '93 or early '94 , just before the first gen Subaru impreza WRX was released, which w as a good thing because the TX3 turbo would have been slaughtered by the new WRX in sales, so it ended on its own terms ,without that sort of competition.

13 year old me: Dad why did you buy an Escort with a 1.8 liter?? You should buy a Mustang with a 5.0. And then 40 year old me: Turning up boost on a 1.8 turbo Miata.

I had a 93 GT and loved it. I bought it used. It was the dealers daughters car and had custom Iris paint and iris on the rims. Odd color tho, half of everyone thought it was pink the other half thought it was light purple. 3 problems I had, the transmission went out 107 miles after warranty, they fixed it free because I had taken it to the shop with shifting problems 7 times in the 3 previous months, the rear tires would wear bald every 3-4 months evenly. Never figured that one out especially since it was front wheel drive. Finally the computer brain caught fire one day. A new one was $750 and they would have to let it blow up then try to find the short. Then put another $750 one in and hope it didn't blow and so on. I still owed 6k on it and was young and dumb so I let to Ford repo it.

Wow! That's a crazy story! Lemon law!
@BamaDave5014 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that was a thing back then, like I said, young and dumb. It gets crazier tho. I ended up filling bankruptcy on Ford motor credit after they garnished me. Later I got a nickel an hour raise. Ford went to court to raise my payments to the bankruptcy court by $60 a month. The judge told them it was ridiculous and threw there whole case out so I owed nothing. A year or so later I left my ex wife. 8 years after that I ran into her and she told me that Ford went after my ex father in law for the rest of the money because he co-signed. I learned two things. Don't buy a pink\purple car and never, ever ever ever ever co-sign with anyone lol.

I had a Cayman package one of these I just reviewed not too long ago. One of the cars I truly regret selling. It’s basically a FWD Miata hatchback.

I test drove an Escort GT w/automatic in '92. Dealer was pushing price up over 14,000 with trade in. Ended up with Nissan Sentra for 11,500.

I think there is one somewhere. I had a yellow 2000 ZX2 SR. Bought it brand new with 9 miles on the odo. Gosh, I wish I still had that car! It was kinda odd with crank windows instead of power ones but the fun factor made up for that easily. The Borla exhaust came from the factory and sounded mean as all get out!

I think they didn’t want to sell the GT With a 5 speed Manual these are quick fun handling cars
@Hazwaste634 жыл бұрын
Funny, when I test drove one of these back in the day (albeit with a 5 speed) it felt much quicker than an 11 second 0-60. But then, most cars then were more bark than bite.

I know guys with both escorts in this video. What I find hilarious is that the guy who has a green one like theirs featured car is an old school hotrodder and the other guy is a corporate number cruncher and has a tan one like when they showed last years model. Well the numbers guy has the faster car than the ole hotrodder guy it appears lol

I really liked this lineup To the top of the line wagon. They proved to be very Tough and reliable little cars. The biggest problem voice body rot in the northern States but down here In Southern Florida you still see quite a few left on the road. Much better than the garbage offerings from GM and Chrysler
