Today's cars look like they got into a fight with each other coming off the production line; they have ugly bulges and broken lines that look like mistakes from the designers. Designs of the 80s and early 90s had much cleaner lines whether they were on a wedge-shaped supercar or a plain old boxy sedan. Monstrosities like the Fiat Multipla and Pig-Ugly Zonda didn't exist in the 80s and 90s.

Funny I actually commented on this video 4 years ago. Just bought a 1984 200SX hatchback. Automatic with the CA20E engine. I already love it. Absolutely amazing interior. Blue everything, blue seats with golden orange stripes. Even the automatic shifter is fun. Wish it was in better condition, but the solid rear axle makes it a phenomenal drift candidate. We already had some fun with it in a parking lot. Funny too that they consider the hood bump and voice warnings garish back then. Now they are rad as hell!

My first NEW car back in 81 Hatchback and it talked - I found myself talking to the car her telling it to shut up I know I need gas! LOL! Got GREAT gas mileage, I went on a trip - around a 1000 miles, filled it up once at 10 bucks. That car would not die. I wrecked it 3 times and it just kept going. What I loved about was it was so far ahead of the American cars that my friends owned.I also won a lot of beer/bets (with my drunk friends) on the engine - I would tell people it had a V8 in that little car and they'd laugh and bet - I'd lift the hood and show them 8 spark plug wires and say see (it had 2 plugs for each cylinder) then shut the hood. LOL! Finally traded it on a used 84 200sx hatchback - black with the two colored seats (black and burnt orange) and the orange colored dash. It was a really sharp car - again ahead of its time and lasted forever. 200SX - GREAT CARS - What memories!

I remember in kindergarten we all were made to watch a video about car safety. It had some cartoon cars that were animated and they talked. I told some of my friends that my mom had a car that talked (85 Maxima) and people looked at me like I was hallucinating. A friend who's mom owned a Chrysler New Yorker backed me up and said I wasn't the only one to drive in a talking car. I'm glad they added a switch for the voice chip. I knew some people who hated the voice chip so much, that they altered the wiring of their car to shut it up.

Back in 1995-2000 in cash flush Microsoft, Boeing, north Seattle these were everywhere, plenty of turbos with 120-150k in nice condition for 500 bucks needing a clutch, or injectors (Nissan at this time till late 90s had really bad injectors) I wish I had a few of my old cars now. Was never a fan of this version(looked like a Cylon from Battlestar Galactica in the nose to me). The original 200SX very quirky looking, the 2nd gen and 4th gen were sweet looking IMO. I remember these Turbo versions being a quite bit faster than shown here on MW. High 7s/ low 8s to 60mph were more the norm from other publications. Seemed like, as others have stated, this version of the 200SX was a favorite of the "Bettys" of the 1980s(I knew a few myself).

Seems like the power output was underrated. It was a heck of a lot faster than the NA I4 model, which did 0-60 in the 12 second range. The later introduced 3.0 V6 had 160hp and although it increased the car's weight by several hundred pounds, that car still had a superior power to weight advantage yet wasn't any faster than the turbo edition. I'd say this engine was pushing more like 140hp to the flywheel and suspect a ton more of torque.

It was not intercooled. See the silver tube going over the top of the engine? It runs from the turbo outlet straight to the throttle body. These cars are surprisingly sleek, that's why they get amazing mileage and have stupid high top speeds for their hp output. Nissan says a base model hatchback with no body kit has a cd of .33. I've read several places that the SE body kit reduces that to .31 but haven't found it anywhere official. I daily drive an '87 200SX SE-V6.

Great looking cars. Almost bought one new but went for the LASER XT TURBO red instead

"These wild fabrics would look right at home as optical illusions in a rock video." LOL reminds me of how cutting-edge we thought we were in the 80s and just how corny it all was in retrospect.

I knew a girl who had one of these in high school. The car has aged much better.

How often would the flip up headlights seize .... like in an ice storm ... or just wear and tear as the car ages ???
@SuperSnallygaster4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, they could freeze but there was a switch to keep them up if you were expecting that kind of weather. The never failed because of wear and tear in 12 years of ownership.

Thats why they had a switch inside to keep the lights raised In case of bad weather

One of my friends in highschool had a base model 200sx that his dad had given him, he proceeded to beat the ballbag outta it sadly and ended up blowing the trans iirc. Sad, because even the base models arent easy to find...

Not many people know that these cars are RWD. I know bc I owned one.
@twoeightythreez6 жыл бұрын
In 1984 most of Nissan's lineup was still RWD. They were in the process of switching over to FWD platforms....but in 1984 you had a choice of only TWO FWD platforms (and 3 models) in the US. Sentra, its platform mate Pulsar, and Stanza.

I had an 84 non turbo notch back non turbo 200 sx loaded with manual tranny, digital dash and voice.. I loved that car to death. Prior to that I had an 80 and 82.. and later on I had a 93 240 .. they were great cars at the time. Too bad Nissan is sub par these days.. I drive BMW’s now and I’ve been happy with them.
