I met some retired special forces Army guys last year that did a trip with side car bikes from Alaska through the Darian gap to Argentina. They said the side car was amazing in Alaska for the stability on icey roads. I would love to try it some day.

@@Makermook I went through the Darien in 1988 with my BMW R80GS coming from Colombia going to Panama. It took 20 days, broke my hand and a couple of ribs in the process. Had a German backpackers help me. I write about this in my book "10 Years on 2 Wheels". I did it because I did not want to spend a lot of money on flying my bike or taking a expensive ferry around. Had no idea how difficult it would be.

My dad got a Zündapp 750 from 1943 in the beginning of the year. We have been working on it since and I've to say amazing machine even though i lean more towards dirt bikes. The quality and details are just stunning. Everything is done with the finest touch and in time consuming way, which is a bit crazy considering Germans were losing the war. Anyway we are planning on taking it back to where it fought in ww2, Lapland. Putting camping gear and fuel in to the sidecar. Going to be fun!

I own a 2017 Ural patrol model and have 11,000 km on her. I have no mechanical issues at all. I ride all four seasons up here in Canada. She has electronic fuel injection and modern components. The Ural has changed from the early bikes that were brought over from Russia. The issues with sloppy machining and poor fit up have been eliminated. The bike isn't built for speed but instead was built as a real workhorse. I haven't seen a bike yet that will pull me away from my beloved Ural.

That is great news about the later Ural models. Next year my company, GlobeRiders, will do another, what we call, "World Tour" and hope to once again visit the Ural factory in Irbit, Russia. First time I were there was in 2002 and the factory was in a rather miserable state. Very happy for you having found a rig that you love that give you so much joy. I feel the same with the sidecar rig that I have today and that is a good feeling. I do need a rig that can keep up the speed and cover long distances during our journeys so the Ural might still not fit my bill. Thanks for sharing and happy trails to you.

Ural* *Individual experiences may vary. There are some older Urals, when internals are updated to modern moving parts, that are incredibly reliable and durable. But then you have ones like my 2012 I bought used with 1,100km on it in Oct 2017, where the crankshaft, head gaskets, final drive, and starter failed in under 15,000km. All metalurgical issues. Even so, I still prefer carbed Urals. Through experience, I've learned to fix it enough to get me home in every case. I can't say the same for my EFI Kawi.

Riden bikes over 50 yrs, rode trikes in 80s and loved that, built my own sidecar 6 yrs ago and it's the best fun ever, still love bikes but sidecars are such a different animal, it doesn't suit everyone but it does me.. 👍👍👍

Hi Helge, beautiful presentation, I had my first sidecar when I was 33 years young, to accommodate a growing family, and had never looked back. Many different models and sizes had come and gone, most of them Australian made, but there was the odd German and Rusian made as well. I ended up being the Sidecar’s club president in Australia for a few years, now I have give them a rest, but not entirely, there is an MZ sidecar hidden in the garage for “ one day” I know I’ll be using it. The big question is in which bike???? Yes you know the answer, A BMW flat tween. I know that there are more powerful bikes and cheaper ones too, but the feeling of that motor and the way it delivers the power and torque combinations is unique to them. Thanks for putting this video/ presentation together, it’s a beautiful way to show people how good it can be, and most important no age limitations, road to difficult or too much snow on the ground, just go!!!!!

Really enjoied this video. Especially enjoied not having the music overwhelm the naration. Most videos with music are so irritating that I only watch a bit before clicking off. Traveling long distances on motorcycles is great adventure and I have done it a lot. Now at 85 (can not get a leg over my last bike, it is sitting in my bedroom) your vids are so wonderful and bring back many fond memories.

I love sidecars, I have one (CJ750). They are tricky to drive and I have seen a lot of folks topple over. They also are much wider and sometimes people forget that and the sidecar wheel goes off the road and they crash. With all that said, just have common sense and ride safely. Its great for taking your kid out camping and riding on weekends. They can relax and sleep in the sidecar and enjoy the view. Great fun!

I thought about the Ural but ultimately went with a Triumph Scrambler XE 1200 and had a DMC sidecar installed. The total cost was about 2k more than a new Ural. I like the Ural's looks and like that it has a two wheel drive mode along with a reverse but ultimately decided against it due to the unreliability issues so many people experience. I do a lot of back country riding on logging roads and such where I might not see another vehicle for hours or at all and usually have no cell phone service in a lot of areas I ride, so reliability was important to me. Also it is easier to get service, parts or find a repair shop for the Triumph than it is for the Ural. I have a ton more horsepower and torque than I would with the Ural which really helps on high elevation trails such as the Imogene pass between Telluride and Ouray Colorado.

I was just looking at Urals at my local BMW specialist shop. I love the idea of trying one especially with the third wheel being driven but I can't see wanting to have that much width ongoing. Great video just across the border from me in Washington State which is nice to see.

Great video and a nice introduction to sidecars. I now have a Ural Patrol which replaced the BMW airhead sidecar rig. The BMW was much faster and probably a bit more reliable (especially at below 0°F) but the Ural is less effort and makes it up icy roads with ease. The BMW always needed speed to compensate for the lack of 2WD. DMC is a great shop as they helped me get my airhead rig on the road.

Very nice and interesting video. Completely different than the sidecare here in Thailand for which most people use a 125cc motorbike or with less power. The sidecar I have is not so much for passengers as for shopping. I transport items with it, that won't fit in our car. And it is fun driving with it.

Helge, really good clip and narrative. I have a Moto Guzzi California 1995 with Charnwood Sports sidecar. Most enjoyment Ive had in 40 years continuous riding......Have a Honda ST1300 and a Moto Guzzi CalVin 1100, but these get to stay in the garage mostly, because of the rig. Try a week in Kerry, Ireland, where I live. Pretty much designed for sidecar travel with fantastic scenery but good creature comforts. Sidecars get under your skin in a way that is completely different to two wheel travel. Please keep posting more of this........

#Tommytommy Yes, you can store more, but so does a camper car. My main incentive to get the sidecar was to have my lovely wife enjoy our rides from a place of enjoyment. Sitting behind me on our solo bike is not that cool, but having a seat for herself next to me with the best view and comfort means everything for us. When the princess is happy everyone are happy.

Mr Pedersen is a legend!! Great video. One thing I really like about the Ural is you can get the sidecar wheel driven from the driveshaft. It gives great traction. It didn’t look like this rig was 2WD, but I could be wrong. But Helge is right that Urals are somewhat unreliable and underpowered.

The BMW with DMC sidecar does not have 2WD. You have to remember that the Ural does not have a differential with 2WD. In other words this is only for use under certain conditions. there are after market producers in Europe that can make all time 2WD for your sidecar rig, but that is expensive.

It would awesome if the side car wheel was a drive wheel as well. There was a old Harley endurance racer that built one and dominated. The motorcycle is at the “wheels through time” museum In Maggie Valley NC.

The production value is amazing and it's clear no expense is spared. Excellent video. My suggestion, I would like to see more and longer content even if it means less edits, drone shots or production value. Seeing the passenger experience and getting to experience more of your journey would be better and we can put up with some unstable footage or bad edits. Keep the good cameras though :). Great job

Watching this makes me feel so proud I chose to go for mechanical engineering. DMC's work is brilliant, efficient and cost effective. Pure and simple. I would add tire pressure control on the sidecar as well to add that extra smooth feeling when in gravel or of roads. The option to raise or lower the side car shock with the hydraulic system is brilliant, amazing feature! who would have thought of that? That's why I love "Small" companies rather than big fat corporations that sell garbage for high price. Thanks for the share! I know the Urals had their problems, but the four best things about the Ural set up is 1). having Brembo disc brakes to the three wheels 2). a reverse gear, a must on any outfit. 3). a handbrake on the sidecar, 4). and they handle beautifully.

#tomlitchen I just had a new sidecar build by Mobec in Germany and I decided to not get the reverse gear. I disagree with you that this is must have for any outfit. If you know that you do not have a reverse gear and make sure not to get in to situations where you can not get out of you will be good. I do have a winch on the rig to get me out of bad situations though. Regardless of your thoughts, the Ural is a great bike for some people and other people need another kind of sidecar rig. Find what works for you and enjoy.

Awesome episode! Helge, a couple of questions for you: 1) How much do you have to counter-steer to make up for the sidecar dragging you to the right? 2) Why did you decide to go with 1-wheel drive vs 2-wheel drive?

@BoomerE30 1) No counter steering needed as long as the rig is set up correct. 2) Money, complexity and most of all I have had clients on GlobeRiders Adventures around the world riding sidecars with 1WD outfits and I can not think of one time that they got stuck with their sidecars or would have had significant advantages with a 2WD rig. For me sidecar riding is not about going to extreme off-road riding. Think about it, I use my trusted BMW R1200GSA LC bike that is a monster of a bike for the touring that I do all over the world and I see it as the perfect bike for what we are doing with GlobeRiders. If I were to do single track and extreme off road riding I would get a bike that is much more suited for that kind of riding. I hope this helps you.

1) a lot, depends on load on sidecar, if you have tree passengers on sidecar on 1WD you will get tired in few minutes. 2) because it's need to put there Ural transmission,readapt all that,too complicated.

I have an Ural sidecar outfit and agree with you that the mechanical side of the Ural is a let down, (mine is a 2015 efi model) although the Urals leading front forks and disc brake on the side car are excellent, i had never ridden an outfit before purchasing the outfit, and have not had a problem with upper body issues or similar, which shows how well they are set up and handle, engine aside. I think your rig is perfect with the BMW and would like to do the same. Keep the videos on your outfit adventures coming.

Glad that you enjoyed the video and that you enjoy your own rig. Who cares what one ride as long as you are having a good time doing it. When I referent to being tiered with upper body work I thin regardless of what brand hack one were riding the curvy roads that we encountered in Colombia and beyond would take it out of most riders. there were literally hundreds of sharp hairpin curves going up and down the valleys. We did 8,000 miles from Colombia to Tierra del Fuego in just over two months, great journey. I have done this journey with solo bikes several times, doing it on 3 wheels was much more physical work and I loved it. Hopefully one day our paths will cross, until then, Ride Far - Ride Safe!

HI there, Urals are great fun and certainly attract a lot of attention. I have a 2015 efi model and although i haven't had any real problems with it so far (not a lot of k's on it either) my friends have had problems with theirs, ($$$), but they have done a lot more k's than i have and the outfits are slightly older models. I certainly wouldn't trust mine on an around Australia trip thats for sure. Transplanting a BMW engine into it would do the trick . My wife reminds me that i could have purchased a new Toyota Corolla for the same price, but thats not what i wanted. Might buy a Beemer. Thanks for the interest.

I loved my sidecar , it offered riding stability . It was a large sidecar seating two small people side by side . Thus it was heavy & the first time in fast Fwy traffic I had to brake hard the weight of the unbraked sidecar shifted me across one lane (scary) but from there on my main brake became the rear with the front to a lesser degree .I did get used to it pretty quick .

I would say go with the Indian, DMC makes some very nice looking sidecars for that bike. Good luck to you.

Stunning video far more out there for sidecar bikes than I'd thought. At 5ft 4 I'm too short for most big bikes but this is perfect for short riders who want a big bike and to carry people and gear. Great video and food for thought❤️

Decent, honest review,..FUN I'm 72, retired x3, still love to ride! I have been enjoying sidecar for over 40 years. The only thing I can't agree on is the # of bikes...I have 3 restored BMWs and 2 sidecar rigs..several dirt bikes as well.

I like the fact that you put a car tire in the back...the side wall is thicker, more puncher resistant etc. I remember doing a trip with my buddies as a teenager 20 years ago in south India and we had one bike that had flat one day after the other...the tire was so weak that it was not able to handle all the weight(we were riding two up plus gear). BTW, what size are those tires?

Do they offer 2wheel drive like you can get on a Ural? I may have missed that in the video. Is the side car bike specific? I bet it is. I think that would be a cool option to have for my bike. I wouldn't want it on all the time. Thanks Brett for putting this video out for us to see!

The sidecar builder that I used, DMC, has different sidecar models for different bikes, check their web page. I know that a sidecar builder in Europe makes a two wheel driven rig, but it is extremely expencive.

We can build sidecars with a driven sidecar wheel however all you really get with it is awesome bragging rights, stock about 50 feet further along then you would have been with out it and a much lighter wallet. The Ural being overweight, underpowered, poorly suspended with skinny tires 2wd is much more use full. I was on an event where there were Ural's on the event, after the event talking to riders there was one place on the event where Ural's needed 2wd. It was such a non event that it took me awhile to figure out just where they were talking about. So I told them all I needed was "more throttle" The BMW has power, suspension, ground clearance, good tires as such 2wd is of much less need. About the only time I find 2wd to be of much value is hill climbing in loose terrain as sidecars suck at this. Sand, which sucks pretty much no matter what and real slow crawling that the BMW is not really geared slow enough for and you are usually beating the bike up pretty bad so I try and avoid it. I would not have 2wd on a rig I was doing a RTW trip on or similar as it is heavy and adds complexities that are just not needed. Jay G DMC sidecars www.dmcsidecars.com 866-638-1793

Thanks. Yes, the allure, extra space, and nostalgia. What's not to love. I considered adding a sidecar to my BMW cruiser until I found out how much they cost. Excuse me a moment while I put myself into deep debt...I found a good used trailer for a song and think it will work out fine, especially that it is easier to modify than modifying a sidecar.

I'm about to ship my R 1250 Rt to DMC for a sidecar. I have been anxiety already : ) Takes 5 months to get back. They are over 2,000 miles from my home. Too far for a ride. Had a Quad by-pass this year. I'm still weak : )

@@scott31312 Good luck with your new baby, it will be a great distraction. However take good care of your body, without it you will not be able to ride your sidecar. I am on a very strict plant based diet myself because of heart problems and doing excellent. Good luck to you.

I have a short inseam of 28inches, but I love ADV bikes and like to have room for contingencies. Riding a tall bike off road for me is very nerve wrecking though because tip toes are just not enough to hold up a loaded bike on uneven ground. I find this sidecar idea VERY intriguing!

I Bought a 2008 Ural Patrol in 2015. Living in Sulphur Springs Valley it's been piloted over some 7 and 9000 ft passes, as well as rocks, dirt, mud, and pavement. You're right, Helge, in that it's underpowered, but that's okay. Otherwise we could have gotten into something the 2-wheel drive and reverse might not have gotten us out of . It will power us (wify and me) through large radii dirt corners while steering with wheel spin (flat tracking, if you will) and that's a gas! Wears out rear tires quickly though, when one plays that game. Maybe see you in Roswell, NM - we can look for UFO parts...or a beer.
