@LukeZalvino4 ай бұрын
wow.. thanks so much. i've been struggling with trying to get a good sound with this combination. louder on the recorder or camera and so on and i couldnt tell what was really the weak spot. it was clearly the cameras gain being up too high and not enough volume output from the zoom. look forward to this. great video thanks John!

Don't forget the clap at the beginning of your filming, it will makes it easier at editing stage to sync as you will see a big spike in the drawing of your waveform when your hands join & clap. Beware of possible drift over a recording lasting a long long time.

This is really clever! Great feature. I've been fighting with shotgun mics for a little while now. Affordable consumer mics just aren't that good, and there's a huge leap in quality and price between consumer shotguns and professionally oriented gear. The backup recording on top of the direct feed is a nice convenience, too! So far I've hooked up to my Panasonic HCV770. For that, I recommend turning the internal camcorder levels all the way down to -30. -27 should be okay but you'll start getting some preamp hiss at that point. This camcorder is super sensitive in that regard. For the H1n's LINE OUT level, I set it at 22, and then the gain at 8. With that I was able to get good capture from subjects nearby but also minimize the preamp hiss. Depending on your needs you should be able to use a little more gain or a little more LINE OUT volume and only take on an editable amount of hiss.

Excellent video, especially for non -tech savvy people like me. I recently bought the Zoom H1N and I have been using a Boya BY-M1 mic with my Nikon D5300. I want to connect the mic with the Zoom H1N and then connect the Zoom H1N to my camera, so that I have 2 audio files. 1. Which cable do I need? TRS to TRRS or some other one? 2. Please give some advice regarding an inexpensive lav mic, which is similar in quality and price as Boya BY m1, because the part of Boya BY-M1 with the battery makes it really fragile. Thank you very much for your time and effort.

Excellent John, really good & easy to understand video. Thanks for taking the time to create & upload it 🙂I'd never thought of using my H1n like this, instead always fiddling about with external mics' & the usually poor internal amps' of cameras. Only problem, well not so much a problem, more an irritation really(!) is my Panasonic GH2 & FZ200 use silly little 2.5mm jacks! Not an issue to hook up, but I just find Panasonic's decision to use this tiny little, non-standard, size ridiculous. Anyway, achieved your suggested results (with the right cable!) & very happy, thanks, take care, A 🙂
