Thanks for the kind comments! And yes, microphone placement has a huge impact on sound quality, I'd say that way more than microphone quality (especially since nowadays 50bucks mics are more than decent).

It's a great little device, I hope you enjoy it! When it comes to accessories, my suggestion would be to buy them when you need them. You can start by using the H1n on its own, and then see if you find limitations that would require extra accessories. For interviews, if you'll use it as a handheld microphone you don't need anything else than the device to get started. If you'll use it as a boom microphone, then you might want a stand (I have a video on using the H1n as a boom microphone). Good luck and ask away! 👍🏼😊

8:34 on powerbanks: beware that some powerbanks have built in auto shutdown feature. My Sony powerbank just shuts down when zoom h1 is plugged, because it doesn’t drain much power. And another note is on USB wall adapters: they may produce hiss sound. The same hiss may appear when you plug h1 to the computer as audio interface. It’s somehow connected to “noisy ground” thing, but I haven’t figured out how to deal with this.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland 4 жыл бұрын
Good tips! I use an Anker power bank and that one seems OK with the H1n. Grounding issues sometimes are related to faulty cables/connections. I'll have to test a bit more using the H1n as an interface and see how it works for me. Thanks for the input! 👍🏻

Very few recorders have a built in battery. From zoom, H1, H1n, H2, H4, H5, H6, F1, F2, D3... All battery powered. Do you have some example of one with built in battery? (Which would be a pain to deal with if it empties mid shooting).

Happy to help! The XY microphone might be good enough, but you might want to look at dual/double lav mics. Basically it's two lavaliers with one cable, so to one stereo track you get one microphone one the right and one in the left channel. Takes some work in post, but it's a pretty cheap and effective solution!
@PH1M0
@PH1M0 3 жыл бұрын
@@RogerinFinland thanks Roger! I thought about using the XY for one person and a lav for the second, that might not balance correctly without a mixer so your solution with the dual lav may be better. I looked for a recording of this setup on KZbin and found none. My question is if you do the dual, when you playback on headphones will you hear one person in one ear and the other person in the other ear? Or will it be stereo hearing both people each in both headphones? Thanks again Roger for all the cool videos !
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland 3 жыл бұрын
Well, you can't actually use the XY and the 3.5mm input at the same time, it's either one or the other. The only way to do "multitrack" with the H1n is to trick it to have 2 mono tracks (like with those dual mics). And yes, the monitoring will be one person in each ear. It might be possible to tell it to output a mixed mono out, but I'm not sure about that. And thanks for the kind comments!!

One other hack would be useful. Trying to record to the H1n coming line in directly from an audio mixer will result in inferior distorting results. There is supposed to be a special kind of audio cable to correct this, it's not a simple audio cable but has another quality. Do you know about this? I'd like to use the H1n for direct line recording, it's so small and convenient to pack on gigs . But so far the recordings are not good at all. Thanks for the H1n hack video.

In the video I used a generic small rig one, but the fit is pretty tight. I think that there are a couple of Movo ones, similar to Rycote stuff but cheaper. Most of these things are compatible with 3/4" threads (normal tripod stuff) but there are plenty of adapters as well.

@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland 3 жыл бұрын
If you do have a properly acoustically treated room I'm surprised you got an H1n 😁 A background hiss however is independent of acoustic treatment and is due to the preamps. The treatment will help with echoes and reflections. It shouldn't be terrible, and with some de-hiss in post it likely goes away. This is after all a 100 bucks recorder.

Excellent video, especially for non -tech savvy people like me. I recently bought the Zoom H1N and I have been using a Boya BY-M1 mic with my Nikon D5300. I want to connect the mic with the Zoom H1N and then connect the Zoom H1N to my camera, so that I have 2 audio files. 1. Which cable do I need? TRS to TRRS or some other one? 2. Please give some advice regarding an inexpensive lav mic, which is similar in quality and price as Boya BY m1, because the part of Boya BY-M1 with the battery makes it really fragile. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback!! 👍🏻 To your first question, from H1n to the camera you'll need TRS to TRS cable. To the 2nd, not sure. The Boya you have does have pretty good reviews. I have the Rode SmartLav and Lavalier Go, both without battery. The SmartLav is cheaper, but you need a TRRS to TRS adapter. The Go is more expensive, sounds better (to my ear) and doesn't require adapters. Other than those two, I've got no experience with other lav mics.

can you share the link to the Shock Mount for the H1n?

I'd rather recommend a better alternative: either the Movo smm5 or smm8. The one in the video is a smallrig shock mount, I think they only make one of them.

I don't know of any handy recorder with internal battery. I've had a few from zoom (H1n, H2, H5, F1, F2 and F3) and all of them work with either AA or AAA batteries.

Nice video. When used with the external line-in I've measured (using RightMark Audio Analyzer) that there is a slight low cut filter applied (-3dB at 40Hz, -4.5dB at 30 Hz) even when bypassing the mic and with the H1n's Lo Cut turned off. This would be problematic if one wants to record a line source with deep bass accurately, such as pipe organ music. Is there some hack to record without this filtering of the very deep bass, flat down to at least 20Hz?

Thanks for the feedback on the video! I haven't tried the Blue Yeti myself. Seems to get good reviews and does look the part. Also, being USB makes it a good option for streamers and online meetings I suppose. Additionally it seems that there's different polar patterns to choose from as well. My first reaction is: wow, looks great and does a lot of stuff for little money! Too good to be true. However, until I get to test one and really hear how it sounds it's all speculation on my end 😊

@@RogerinFinland I'd like to use the Samsung camera but record the sound with H1n directly into the phone. There is a TRS to TRRS cable for Rode and Boya mics that I could use for the H1n and then an adapter from the TRRS to usb-c. I'll buy them and give them a try. I'll update here.

One more thing, connect via usb camera adapter, without using 3.5 mm out port
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think I understand your use case. You can power the H1n via USB using a power bank. You can connect your H1n to a computer and a) transfer files or b) use it as interface; in the computer case the computer probably delivers power as well. You can connect it to an iOS device and use it as interface; I doubt the iOS device will power the H1n, and I wouldn't use a USB hub for the purposes of powering something in any case. I don't have any iOS device myself, so I can't test this.
@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland 4 жыл бұрын
This use case is even more confusing to me. I don't know what a "USB camera adapter" is. If you are talking about connecting the H1n with a camera via USB (because the camera has a USB port) that will not work. Via USB, the H1n can transfer files, which the camera won't understand, or used as audio interface, which the camera won't understand either. If what you want is to transmit audio from H1n to a camera, the only way is the 3.5mm connection.

I have question for you. Can it record audio with its stereo mic and it's input audio at the same time also on separate tracks?

Nope. It's a stereo single track recorder. If something is plugged into the 3.5mm jack the built in microphones are disabled.

@RogerinFinland
@RogerinFinland 3 жыл бұрын
Noise as in background noise? There's no magic setting to get rid of that if the microphone has a bad noise floor. You can try the filters in the H1n, and also don't crank up the gain. Also try different mic placement like the lapel, literally, keeping the mic at 30ish cm from the source.

The H1n is an XY stereo microphone so it isn't very directional. I think that to use the H1n for that purpose you'd need to put it very close to the source, like a handheld microphone from a news outlet.
