My grandfather had the same tractor he had the front mower an the sickle bar . Few years ago I restored the tractor.

This is, by the looks of this tractor is a 61 Cub Cadet tractor. Usually, they have a square mower deck on them with two blades 12 to 6, and 3 to 9 blades that are synchronized when and while cutting grass.

I've never seen that type of mower, what would be the advantage over a belly mounted mower deck?

4 gauge the tractor is an "original," called that because it didn't have a model number. It came with a 7hp kohler. I've got several Cubs (wide and narrow frames), a couple old wheel horses, a Massey etc. none of them have anything over a 16hp single, so I don't agree with your assessment that you need 20-30hp to run a belly mower but otherwise thanks for the info., I've just never seen one of mowers. I've seen sickle bars, belly, and pull behind reel mowers, just not one of these. I'll have to keep my eyes open maybe to add one to the collection.

the advantage to a front mount is access... especially in rough cut applications, which is what a flail mower is designed for. Flail decks allow the unit to engage growth of much higher material, without that size and footprint of an equivalent rotary deck (traditional blade). Flail decks also produce finer clippings and scalp less over uneven terrain.
