It's great to see you react to this epic anthem of the 1970s written by Bowie and gifted to his friend Ian Hunter the singer of Mott the Hoople. It saved the band who were exhausted , about to break up after their previous 4 LP's went nowhere. The lyrics mention T. Rex / Marc Bolan which is another monster band from the late 60s through the 70s. Mott, Bowie, T. Rex, Roxy Music, Sweet, Suzi Quatro and Slade were the Glam gods. We love 'em all !

What I like about your reactions is a) You don't just do obvious stuff b)You have good musical taste c) You discuss the lyrics and d) You look up the history of the song/band. "Honaloochie Boogie" "All the Way from, Memphis" and "Roll Away the Stone" would be worth a listen too. Keep up the good work.

All the Young Dudes by Mott The Hoople is the 70’s British Glam Rock Anthem. Great Song & Criminally Underrated Band. Next check out All the Way From Memphis by Mott. Classic Rock Staple 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

They were from Hereford in the UK, where I live now. Not many bands came from this little market town. I thought they were a fun band in the 70s, I've got their greatest hits album on the shelf. They had a few more hits after this smash. All the way from Memphis. Roll away the stone. Ballad of Mott, is a fun track too. + Saturday gigs, is another. The message I get from All the young dudes is Hey, we're just kids looking for a fun time. Forget those adult hassles. It's a very free and easy song. I love it. Bowie only made it big that same year 1972 when he released Star man. The top of the pops video had everyone talking.

Wow, one of my favorite concerts. The British Invasion for us artists. Seattle's Paramount wasn't even filled and everyone smoking pot filled the beautiful venue. Then Bowie came out and played sax and he wasn't even billed on concert. It was an amazing experience. Top 3 concerts i attended. 😍🤩😘 Counter Culture good stuff.

Mott the Hoople was the favorite band of Clash and Pistols members who I understand followed them around . At least that is how the story goes . Mot was a very popular live . A collection of Mott plus Ian hunter alone is a necessity in any humans vinyl collection

Bowie did this song occasionally in his concerts, from the 70’s until his last tour in 2000’s. 😎

I actually love hear Bowie singing it himself .... He wrote this for MH as they were thinking of breaking up as they had had limited commercial success and wanted to get them a Hit..... But it is so much more fitting as a Bowie song

I had a chance to see Mott twice and Bowie once, incredible performances. Bowie produced the entire All the Young Dudes album, and every single song is gold. As for Suffragette City, the song they passed on, it's the highlight of the Ziggy Stardust album and one you need to check out, it's amazing!

The term “dude” was originally an insult. I found through two resources, cowboys and ranchers used the term “dude” from “yankee doodle” for one from the East,…like when Theodore Rosevelt, from NYC, went out west, he arrived in tailored suit, boots, had kit for working on a ranch, Teddy R’ was a “dude” to Cowboys, in 1890’s. Teddy proved himself on ranch’s, with guns, in time, out West,…and, when Teddy enlisted in the US Military for what became The Spanish-American War, and Teddy R’ led his troop of men from our West with him, into Battle, the term Dude was not an insult for an unproven Eastern man who couldn’t make it in the wild. T. Rosevelt was “the Dude” before “the Big Lebowski” 😎🥃

I saw Ian perform this with his solo band in 79. Always a crowd fave. Although Bowie wrote this I think Ian is also one of the greatest songwriters ever.

Bowie didn't give the song away from a secure point of stardom. He hadn't yet released his own breakthrough record then, the 1972 album -"The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars"

This was before mobile phones so all the news of what was going down was carried by word of mouth Just so great a song written by Bowie honoring the great band TREX (I hate that tree in Barnes) and shop lifting in Marks and Spencers although Woolworths was easier and more variety

It’s about the shift between the hippie s and the rock and rollers, and the younger kids, the audience of the glam bands (Mott TH, T-rex. Bowie) The "revolution" of he 70s were more individualistic, creative, sexy and fun, than the come-togetherness of the hippies.

So glad you made your way to this song, and moreover, that you spoke so highly of David Bowie's backstory with the song, as well as his character. One of the best. Check out Bowie's "Bring Me the Disco King". Man owns style.

funnily enough Queen only ever opened for 1 band --- Mott the Hoople... and they were so in awe of Mott that they opened for them on 2 tours. Brian May's and Freddie Mercury's own words.
