Controller: Novation Circuit is the heart of my setup, its the MASTER clock and I use it as a MIDI controller for my synths. Juno DS 88 as my MIDI keyboard. Korg SQ-1 as a Step Sequencer. A Beatstep is not yet fully integrated, but will be soon. Synths: Novation Circuit for percussion sounds (not drum). Korg Volca Kick, FM, Keys, Bass. Behringer Crave, TD-3, K-2. Roland JU-06. Uno Synth. And a Korg Kaosspad which I have not really decided yet how to use. All are merged with the Motu Midi Timepiece AV, plus two Y-Midi Splitter cable, because 8 channels are not enough anymore. The Korg SQ-1 is midi muted to not interfere with the Circuit.

Dude, this was great! Appreciated the hardware overview here as I'm searching for a solution for midi and SMPTE time code control for running a similar setup plus an MPC 2000XL. It just drifts all over the place with Midi only control for sync etc. so I'm hoping one of the newer MOTU boxes is going to work out for me. Thankfully not doing anything with SysEx frequently enough to worry about those specific issues. But now I know that even if that part of things doesn't work out the generally useful Midi matrixing, routing, and all that awesomeness really does work as well as I could hope for.

Jack: fantastic video. With the Motu devices can I save a preset with a common routing? Say I normally just want to record midi and audio on any hardware I have but in some instance I want to sarcoma a bass sounds from Peak and Pro 2? I could open the software but a preset would be hip. Secondly, say I want to play the pro 2 from its keyboard to record something programmed to its ribbon controllers rather than using my Nektar controller. Issues? Thanks for the informative look.
@jackthemurray2 жыл бұрын
Hey! I ended up upgrading my laptop and thus replacing my MTP AV USB, so most of what I say here will be going off of memory as I no longer have the device or a way to use it. To my knowledge you cannot save presets on the MTP AV USB. The device will remember the last state it was in though. I'm pretty sure you can save presets or scenes in Clockworks and reload those though and send the saved state to the device that way. I could be wrong though. Regarding the second question, yes you can totally use the Pro 2's keyboard as a controller. Just make sure that MIDI output is enabled on the Pro 2, patch the output DIN port into the MOTU, and then route that output to any MIDI input. I don't know the Pro 2 personally, but you'd want to make sure that the ribbon controller is capable of sending MIDI out. I'd bet it is, but you'd want to double check that it can and that it's enabled. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. If you'd like to discuss further feel free to message me on IG @jackthemurray. Best of luck!

Hi Jack, sorry to bother but I'm having a problem with my Motu Timepiece and was wondering if you could help me figure it out. I installed it and it detects it but I can't reach the instruments separately. I can only play them with my USB midi controller when I route it thru "all cables" but then it plays all the synths at the same time. How do I route it so that I can send midi separately to each channel? I did some research and thought I was doing it right but no luck so far and when I did it like you show in the video my synths only play when External Instrument Midi is from "All Cables". I have the controller (Akai mpk mini) and have setup 4 different ext. inst. and have setup 4 different channels on my synths. Atm only want yo control my tb3 on output 1 and my Electribe 2 on output 2 but like I said I can only reach thru "all cables" as output. I reset the Motu to factory default. Hope you can help me out as atm my Motu is useless. Cheers
@jackthemurray4 жыл бұрын
Hi Darkatek, no bother at all! I read through your post and the one thing that stands out is that you're using different MIDI channels on your synths themselves. I actually recommend leaving each synth on "all" and then routing the physical ports on the midi timepiece. Are you using the clockworks software to control the routing or setting it on the front panel? It can be done either way. If you send me a message on instagram @jackthemurray I can share pictures and video of my setup and walk you through it easier. It sounds like it's definitely just a setup problem though so I'm sure we can get it working!
@darkatek4 жыл бұрын
@@jackthemurray Thx for the quick reply Jack. I'm using Clockworks with the original settings. I noticed I have more ports available on my Midi to of the Ext Inst. than you. I have the normal 8 plus Net port, Adat and All Cables. When I set the Midi out to Midi Timepiece All Cables I can send Midi to them but when choosing the actual port it doesn't send. It's quite weird.

Great video! I just got the older non USB version of the MIDI timepiece. I am trying to set it up via the lcd screen but it just won't work. I am routing the cables as described in the manual but my novation circuit just won't connect with my synth modules. Is there any crucial setting I am missing?
@jackthemurray4 жыл бұрын
I'd say do a factory reset on the box. From there set the input and output routings in the "route by cables" menu. If you have a basic midi keyboard that you know works, I'd prob test the routing with that first. And then try the novation circuit. Mostly because I wonder if the circuit could be complicating things and I'd want to make sure the MTP isn't the problem. From there make sure all your devices are on the same midi port channel (1-16). The ports on the MTP may be routed correctly but if the midi channels aren't set right your devices won't connect. I hope that helps!

Is there any noticeable input lag pushing the midi data through your computer out to the Motu and inevitably your desired synth? I gotta say, you've got the kind of set up I've been trying to figure out, and my midi controller was one of the biggest hurdles.
@jackthemurray2 жыл бұрын
Hey man, no nice able lag that I’ve experienced. Your cpu, ram, buffer size, etc. will obviously play a factor in that though. But this kind of midi routing is pretty standard and commonly used throughout the industry, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If there is lag and you can’t stand it, then using your controller directly into the midi interface would be a work around. Hope that helps.

Hey! I ended up upgrading my laptop and thus replacing my MTP AV USB, so most of what I say here will be going off of memory as I no longer have the device or a way to use it. When I initially set it up, I had a similar issue. If I recall, it was caused by the fact that I had the wrong version of Clockworks installed. To my knowledge, I never had to do anything in audio/midi setup to get the MOTU to work with Clockworks. That seems odd to me and makes me think you might have a newer version of the software than you need. I would see if you can find an installer for an older version of Clockworks and try that out. @jackthemurray4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Sorry if I'm not understanding your question correctly. But here it goes The reason it only receives input from MTP #3 (on the software) is because that routing is a physical output port on the back of the Motu. Not to be confused with stardard midi channels (1-16). Since I have each device plugged into its own midi din in and out port I don't have to worry about setting different midi port channels. Each device is set to one and since each has it's own physical port and each device is set on midi ch 1 or all. I wouldn't know how to resolve the issue with your juno. Perhaps the midi channel setting is set to recieve from all in the juno menu. I'd be happy to discuss further. Hope that helps!

@jackthemurray4 жыл бұрын
Hey Ed, welcome to the channel! I looked through some forums and don't have an exact answer - but here's what I believe to be true: parallel to USB adapters do exist, and these were a viable solution for older windows based machines. The consensus on the internet is that access to drivers will be the limiting factor. My guess is that there won't be any windows 7 or 10 drivers available likely because they were never made. But, depending on your knowledge in that area you may be able to get it to work. Regarding mac bases systems, my guess is this wouldn't be plug and play, and it may not work at all. But I've never tried anything like this so YRMV. I do have two suggestions that may help. 1 would be to purchase an MTP USB. You can then daisy chain the non USB MTP to that and have a 16x16 interface. This could be a sub 100$ solution that gives you a lot of flexibility. The hard part here is finding one in decent shape as they are less and less available. Suggestion 2 would be to purchase a new midi interface all together. iConnectivity has a lot of great options. This may be the least headache and might be the fastest way to get you producing again. Either way, best of luck! Hope that helps, and thanks again!

@@jackthemurray I'll let you know. I'll probably end up purchasing new interface. I'm about to purchase new mac. I have few old synths. 101, korg monopoly, juno 60 and juno 106. Also have akai samplers. I want to use all of these. I have kenton converter. To make 101 and monopoly midi. I will just assign them to different midi channels for now. Same with other synths. It will do for now. I used to have them on separate midi ins and outs on interface. I'm basically starting over. It's been years since using my equipment. Having kids and work commitments. Put it on back burner. I need a hobby to get in to again. I'm going to start makin beats again👊🤞

@@edglue6138 Hey Ed - I just bought a non-USB MTP AV. Why? Because I already have a USB version. In the manual, it explains how to connect the non-USB version to the USB version to "network" them together to create a 16 in 16 out interface. So - buy a USB version and keep your older non-USB unit! I'm in the same situation with a few older synths and controllers and a few newer ones - Korg Triton Rack; Roland JV1010, XV2020, A-70, D-10, JX-3P, PK-5, GR-30, GR-55, TD-20, SPD-S; Kurzweil PC3K8, Gsi DMC-122 with Gemini, Novation UltraNova, Ensoniq TS-12, Alesis QS8 and QSR, Yamaha VL70m, BOSS SE-70, Line 6 Helix, ART SGE II/X-15, Lexicon MPX-1, Digitech Vocalist II and Live and an Antares. Audio goes to a Roland M120 and a TASCAM LM-8ST, then to a TASCAM US-2000 interface and an X-32 rack. Actually, two of these MOTU units isn't enough to give them all a separate in and out, but adding a third becomes problematic as MOTU only designed the MTP AV to to paired with just one additional unit - but the good news is they don't have to be identical.

@jackthemurray if you exceed 8 midi devices (and you will) an option (probably the best) is to buy some Kenton multipliers (splitters) between the motu outputs and your devices inputs, and a few Kenton mergers between your midi devices outputs and your motu inputs, and connect ALL your devices through them! - NOT some of them directly to the motu inputs, and the other ones through the Kenton devices!!! - this is to avoid timing problems (the signals of some of your midi devices might reach your DAW sooner than those from the other devices). No midi thru connections on the devices side! All the midi cables should be the same length, same model and same manufacturer! The Kenton midi multipliers/splitters make an exact copy of the connected motu midi port and sends it to each of its outputs(5, 12, or 25 outputs). As a motu midi port has 16 channels, you can connect up to 16 midi devices to just one motu port (one device on each separate channel) - assuming you buy the "Kenton midi thru 25". You can actually connect up to 25 midi devices per motu port using that Kenton midi thru 25, but those 8 extra devices must share the channels already assigned to other devices. The same goes on the way back, from midi devices to motu's inputs. But here the largest merger that Kenton makes is "merge 8" - merges 8 midi devices into 1 port - so you need to buy more mergers. For questions, call or email Kenton ( they are an english company). The only difference between your actual setup and having ... let's say 16 midi devices per port, is that now you have 16 midi channels available for each midi device (which, usually, you do not need nor use ‐ there are few synths that can use multiple channels at the same time - the MPE-type of controllers i believe use more channels at the same time or even the whole port). If you have 16 devices per port, you need to assign 1 channel to each device - which is perfect. Create a template in your DAW with a track per each device, each on its separate midi channel (the channel that you chose in that respective device' menu) and ... creativity time. It should work flawlesly. I do not have this setup yet and am not 100% sure it will work flawlesly. It is just the result of my studies and I want to go with it when I build my new studio.

Thanks for the comment! A new MacBook forced me to sell the MTP AV and move over to an iConnectivity MioXL. So I’m good for now!

Hello, by any chance where do you download the software to route the midi for the mtpAV? Thanks
Is it still compatible with today’s version of macOS?

Do you know if the MTPAV works in Catalina? Also, do you know of any drivers for MTPAV that are newer than the 2011 version in your link?
@jackthemurray4 жыл бұрын
As far as I know the MTPAV USB Clockworks driver only works up to Mojave. That's one of the main reasons I'm still running Mojave. There may be a patch or work around that I don't know about but if you're a Catalina user I would double check before buying. With that being said, the MTPAV line (USB and Non-USB models) are both able to be patched from the front panel. So depending on your setup you may not even need the USB functionality. Hope that helps!

Hi anyone knows if it can runs on macOSX 10.11.13?

Mojave and anything before should be supported. Catalina is what broke it for me.

I've had my MIDI TimePiece AV (MTP) for ages too, it swear by it, only downside is MOTU no longer supports it with MAC OS Monterey.. . I recently bough the latest MacBook which comes with Monterey pre installed and my newer MOTU 828 es audio I/O requires Monterey. it is a drag and makes no senses given my MTPav is in tip top shape and I'm reluctant to purchase the newer model from MOTU given the build looks cheap and lacks some of the functionality of my MTPav that I use regularly. Plus it just seems a bit pathetic for MOTU to stop supporting this device almost a kick in the teeth. I mean I don't know what hardware or software issue truly prevented an update... I'm wishing there was an alternative to MOTU's software to manage the MTPav. Currently, I'm running an older Mac concurrently with m new machine...to allow me to more quickly manage the MTP, though, the front panel control works just fine. I'm looking at OSC to potentially build some parameter controls through MIDI...if that worked and if I can find the time!!!

Thanks for sharing! I definitely feel your pain! My mid 2012 mbp graphics fried on me randomly one day. Never was able to get the machine back. So had to quickly buy a new M1 Pro MBP. Say bye bye to the MTPAV. Loved that box, very easy to use and simple software. As far as I’m concerned there’s no reason why that box couldn’t be supported on modern OS versions. I’m sure it’s strictly an issue of MOTU not wanting to devote time or resources to updating software for an out of production box that they’re no longer making money off of. When I was looking for a replacement, I passed on the modern MOTU boxes as I read there were some issues with transferring sysex files to vintage synths and a risk of corruption. That scared me off. Ended up with the iConnectivity mioXL and have been happy with it. Hoping it holds up for me! Thanks again for sharing!
