Mould has been attacking my house this year, I solved it by buying lots of dehumidifers, car ones, and the disposable tubs. It's sad that some people won't even be fortunate enough to have the money to buy those.

One cannot address mold, and damp in UK homes without addressing the shoddy building practices of UK builders, and the housing designs they use. A great part of UK housing supply is not fit for use, this is a political problem that no UK government has chosen to address. Energy efficiency wise UK houses are in the toilet, one could say even toilets are more energy efficient then a great part of the UK housing stock. These shameful conditions are a direct result of numerous UK government policies, and will not change till they do.

My sister topped up the energy by £20. She then used the whole lot in one day just doing normal things because she hadn’t realised how much it had gone up. It is sickening that people on prepay meter have to pay 80% HIGHER unit rates than those of us on direct debit. If there should be any disparity, prepayment should be the cheaper option.

It doesn't help when social housing is poorly insulated and the Councils blame the tenants. The Councils solution to mold is to, "Put the heating on and open all the windows". It defies logic, especially with the cost of heating homes these days!

It cost me £20 to have my heating on for 24 hours. I was poorly and I also have arthritis. I work full time but there us no way I can afford this. Also british gas just didn't bother putting my £66 energy rebate on my meter this month. Tried to call them and the waiting time is 4 hours. I am basically stuffed now. social housing maintainance managers are there to look after share holder money not their tenants, i live in an mid terraced 1900s house two up two down, i have to fight for repairs which are often bodged to save money but not for looking after their tenants health or welfare. i have had the tried to get the damp sorted out three times and for some reason its always the same bodg job builder they use, at this moment im fighting for a new front door as the weld on the upvc seam has cracked which lets in rain, it took six months to have the rear door replaced as it was unsafe, it took a year to get the boiler replaced but they didnt replace the 26 year old radiators so the boiler will need to be changed in five to six years again. my home is rented from L&H association. no one should be living like this in 2022, all these old terraced houses should have been replaced long ago.

A quick tip, don't leave wet towels on window sills to endlessly collect the condensation. The moisture will only evaporate back into the room during the day for it to recondense on the winows again over night causing an endless cycle of damp and mould growth. Instead dry the windows off and wring the towel out in the sink so the water goes down the drain and out, hang the towel outside afterwards and do that every morning.

@@alexanderockenden2564 Mostly lifestyle! Living in my house for years never had a problem with damp or mould, I rented it out to a family and within six months they had black mould in every room (one bedroom every wall and ceiling was black!) Turned out they used the central heating for an hour in the mornings and for two hours in the evenings, switched off the extractors, dried clothes inside, cooked and showered without opening the windows to keep the house warm? Got them to move out but cost thousands to clean and redecorate. Subsequently rented it to someone else who lived there for years without any signs of damp? It was a newer property with double glazing and modern insulation levels. So while technically old poorly built and maintained buildings could have issues, my experience makes me think that it is the people not the buildings which are the biggest problem.

As a landlord I have had a Romanian family living in one on my houses. They have damaged the house inside as well as outside and this year the first sign of damp has started coming through and they started to complain. They ended up going to the walk in center and someone from there phoned me pointing out that I needed to get the house sorted out. Anyway I told him that its absolutely up to them if they are no longer happy with the condition of the house then they can find another home and move there. If they choose to remain in my property then I am fine with that but what they will have to do is open the bedroom windows during the day and start putting on the heating. It's just going to get worser. I can't ask them to leave because they'll stop paying me the rent.

I'm not surprised about the mould becoming an issue, have lived in many properties with this issue. That being said, I would appreciate, if there was some advise in the report on how to deal with the damp, such as opening windows every morning and evening. Keep things away from the wall. Clear the mould as soon as it starts to build up - use chemicals to remove it - it is the last option, but helps anyway. About the old stock of houses - that usually isn't an issue. The age doesn't matter, if the property is well maintained. But that is an issue for landlords, they don't (often) want to invest in the property. They just buy it and then milk it. Property buy-to-rent capitalist approach is the worst and any government with common sense should stay away from it. Speaking of common sense and the government... :)

Irrespective of how good the property is if the tenants live in a way that generates damp the proeprty will have damp and mold Two identical properties lived in by two different families one will be mold one won't The mold family will be Drying cloths indoors Not airing the bathroom after showers Not heating the property sufficiently Not mopping up window condensation Not letting in any fresh air in the winter

It's important to add that ALL windows have to be opened at the same time to create cross-circulation, otherwise it's useless !!!!!!! I recommend ten minutes twice a day, no matter how cold it is !!! Nothing should be densely adjusted to a wall, always leave 2-3 cm space in between!!! Keep room doors open as often as possible, closed cold rooms have a higher risk to develop mould !!!!

its damp and moldy because they dont let the place dry out and try cleaning once in awhile. sure close the windows at night but open them during the day if ur home. they sell sub zero sleeping bags that ppl can use to survive extreme colds. u cold use that to sleep and crack the windows open on cold nights. like for crying out loud there are options. they even sell little moisture absorbers for like a dollar that soak up moisture in the air in enclosed spaces...

To protect themselves from tennants causing the issue in the first place via turning off heating etc, landlords should install a built in dehumidifier somewhere in the property that can't be turned off, that turns on automatically when the humidity reaches a critical level, even if it is an electrical cost to the tennant, they cause the issue, they pay for the usage cost. Then this situation wouldn't be an issue, and the landlord has peace of mind their property isn't being destroyed by mold because of imbecilic tennants.

@@tomjones8715 oh no! A law that's meant to stop homes being horded by the upper class! What devilry! If only the average citizen of the UK could afford a mortgage when they're up against the mortgage of a landlord who's mortgage rate is adjusted in favour of the rent income they'll recieving from the tent of their tenant. There is no way for a normal person to get ahead without these laws. Landlords say they're providing a service until something needs fixing then they'll ignore until the lease needs renewal and up the rent by an unreasonable amount

Why don't the politicians across Europe and North America don't just settle the housing as a human right and create many houses for no money....? We reached the stage of 3D printing years ago.. and a house can be built within days rather than months... The whole negligence thing impacts the birth rate and has been doing so for years and years... Our median age is 40+ years and yes, I know the rest of the world has growing population.. but it makes no sense to keep focusing on profits.. yes.. the politicians are rich af and have 2nd and 3rd job and yes they accept donations and lobby for laws that benefit the rich further.. but this is just not right.. it's too much already.
