Mount Ritter - Clyde Minaret

Smoke and cloud may have limited our views on part of the trip, but it didn't hurt the climbing. Our team summited Mt Ritter on Sunday under heavy fog/cloud cover that made route-finding a challenge. -

Mount Ritter is located in the Sierra Nevada, in Madera County of California, in the Western United States. It is in the Ansel Adams Wilderness of the Inyo and Sierra National Forests. Mount Ritter is the 16th highest mountain peak of California.

Clyde Minaret is the highest of the Minaret chain, which is itself part of the Ritter Range, a dark metamorphic core of the ancient Sierra. Clyde is not only the highest but also the most massive of the minarets.

I ascended Ritter in 1972. In June we decided to come back in August as there was way too much snow. Hiking over Donohue was a nightmare with 60 to 80 feet of snow. None of us (us being 3) had done the JMT over Donohue before, but we managed it and 1000 Is. Lake still had snow on it, so we backed out of climbing Banner and Ritter at the time. We decided to do Banner after a couple of days, but it was an easier ascent.

This was nice to see and bit helpful as I will be attempting a solo ascent of Mt. Ritter in 3 days. Can’t wait!!
