They are deigned in such a way that they will bend or break before there is any damage done to the frame or derailleur.

Thanks for the video mate. Something like this happened to me on the trail while I was going uphill. I wasn't that lucky though, as derailleur came of and got stuck in between the spokes of my wheel. Had to carry it for 3 kms!

I'm really wondering. I just bought a Mountain Bike 2 days ago. And the hanger bent (not really chipped of like yours) accidentally (without me knowing how it did broke). Is this really the nature of the hanger wherein it can be easily bent? or am I doing something wrong with changing gears? The repairman said that perhaps a large stone struck the hanger and it has caused it to bent. But I highly doubt that. Hope you can answer my question. Newbie here

finalyyyy, ive been looking for a video showing exactly how to attach the derailleur on the hanger for hoursss. Great video ! :)

One of my big pet-peeves is in this video. At 3:57, he tightens it way too tight. This does damage to the screw and the tool, weakens the integrety of the parts, and makes it harder to get off, while doing more damage. I'm stuck trying to remove a broken hanger from a derailleur. That's why I'm watching this video. I notice he does that in this video. I saw how easy he got it off. I know he didn't put it ON.

Hi , Thanks for the video, a lot of useful detail. The hanger, a new thing for me, has broken on my Dahon Jack and it looks pretty similar to this one. I need to get a replacement. However, it doesn't have a number on it. Don (UK)

My bike does not have a replaceable hangar, it’s welded in. Is there any way I can install a replaceable one?
@dimiz40965 жыл бұрын
You would need to draw an archiecture and get the mathmatetics precisley and wield the design to allow for a hanger, in general it doesnt really matter how far the new hanger is in comparison to the old pivot point. What matters is if the chain is long enough and that the wheels on the rear derailluer do not come into contact with the rear gears. But I believe its better to get a derailluer hanger and place it in the sproket where your normal derailleur hangs from or better yet get a derailluer hanger extender.

can one of these hangers be put on a bike that doesn't originally have a replaceable hanger (welded on like the video states). I'm looking at a GT hard trail which does not have a replaceable hanger. I bent the frame on my old GT timberline. $500 gone

Hi on my bike the bolt on the derailleur that attaches to the hanger won't turn , it's not stripped , it seems t be wedged between the tension pin lever part , ie the whole thing turns , it's driving me crazy , it's not the derailleur as it did it with my old one , I took the old one to a local bike shop for them to remove as it was the same and they took it straight off , while I was fitting it did it again , then it was ok , the allan key would turn the bolt , then I realised I put it on wrong and when I tried to take it off it has done it again , please help , the problem is basically the bolt will not turn , it will turn a few mm back and forth but the derailleur tension lever part seems to be turn as well and blocks against the hanger ,surely the bolt is meant to turn freely and not with the lever part turning as well , sorry if this is a confusing question , any help would be apreciated before I saw it off , p.s it is 100 percent not threaded the lever part is turning with the bolt screw part of the derailleur , anyway any ideas ? thanks

@witboj82816 жыл бұрын
You always have to put a lot of grease between the hook and the frame and the screws otherwise you will often hear crackles when pedaling. The tightening force of the hook is 10Nm

any ideas why these things happen? I work at a huge retail store in the sports department and I have seen bikes come back with broken deraileurs that just snapped off or exploded when the customer tried shifting the gears. not the hanger part but the cheap plastic deraileur snaps in half or so..

I've done this before and it was as straightforward as this. This time I brok one on a GT Karakoram, i found replacements, but the existing one seems riveted to the frame? I see no hex head or anything, anyone know this? Must I drill it out?

My hanger snappped, I got off the part that was connected to the frame but for some fucking reason the part that is connected to the Derailleur is fucking magically glues on there and can not be loosened. And what makes it even harder is that instead of the screw being on the outside of the derailer its way the fuck on the inside of it so I can only use my alan wrench and it hurts my hand to push hard.

You should of replaced that junk alivio derailleur while you were at it with something better like SLX or a XT derailleur. Also you should check the derailleur to see if it got bent when the hanger broke. Not to nit pick but even a brand new derailleur hangar can need some fine tuning and a bicycle shop will have a park tool derailleur hangar adjustment tool just to be sure it is perfectly straight.

No issues with assembly for me kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
