I think that you should retain last year’s category bike of the year winner, and put that into the field of this year to see if there’s been an improvement in the field from one year to the next.

If only Trek would bring their QC into line, a friend had to have his previous EX warrantied for a known issue and now the new one is going to have to be warrantied for a manufacturing defect, and apparently their test bike had paint QC issues. It's a lot of money for a bike that seems to be a crap shoot if you get a good one or not.

@@ghostAFsky What helps the Gen 6 right now is first it uses Shimano which is always good low end but all their 6th gen use at least mid range parts so it just looks good in general. They don't have any low end 6th gen yet and we might not see them till next year at the earliest. Regardless I have hardly any experience on FS bikes, my last was a hardtail, but I take out the Fuel EX 8 6th gen out to the trails tomorrow for the first time. Got the bike yesterday.

I think it's a good choice for a large range of riders and terrain. I had the previous version and it was *almost* there, but still a good bike. With the latest revisions, namely a bit more travel and dropping the proprietary bits, they've made a much better bike. Still wondering why they didn't put the same effort into the Remedy.

This! I have a remedy, and though I love it, i have a few nags that I think would be well addressed by a refresh. I'm pulling for the remedy to come back as a 160/160(maybe150) mullet playbike. That would be so awesome and a dream come true if its refinement is on the same level as this fuel EX.

I can agree with that. I do have a few questions. How do you pick the bikes to review? Do the company have to pay a fee. I feel like a lot of top bikes are missing. Pivot, specialized, Ibis, Transition, Cannondale, Revel, Rocky Mountain. I would really love to see a shoot with all the top bikes. I feel like there are wild cards always thrown in. They mostly review bikes that were released/got an update in the current year which is why the stumpy evo and RM instinct wouldn’t be in the field test as the trek. I do wish they compared bikes to the winners of previous field tests more like they did with the specialized enduro.

Downtube storage is not something I would've thought twice about half a year ago, seeing it as a gimmick of moderate practical application. Now I swear by it. I'm able to stash away an inner tube (a full size one), a pump, a multitool, assorted small things like zipties and master links, a pack of paper tissues and a Snickers with room to spare into a downtube of my Stumpy Evo. I finally understand that riding without a backpack doesn't mean riding helpless, naked and unprepared, but rather unrestrained and unhindered.

Not surprised at all. Seems like a Trek has build a bike that can be a real Trail bike, but also a real All-Mountain/Enduro bike, and it can accomplish them both well with it's adjustability. They've made the equivalent of a Tire that is both a racing slick and a mud tire all-in-one, as opposed to an "all-season" tire thats shitty on all surfaces. Well done Trek...I want a new bike now lol.

The right pick I think. But the downside to all that adjustability I think is that most riders will use it a lot less than they think. I suspect what will happen is most riders will get it, set it, and probably forget it even if their riding differs and might be more suitable for a different setup. Because, let’s face it, how many of us have the time to constantly change our bikes? What is very cool though about the adjustability is that riders from the more rowdy side and the more flowy side can both get this bike and set it up to suit them perfectly. For me though, if I get another bike it’s that Nomad, because it suits exactly the type of riding I would get another bike for. I already have my go anywhere do anything bike. Happy 2023 Pinkbike- the year that the Grim Donut goes on sale? 🤙

I love Trek bikes. Im surprised they aren't always mentioned when speaking about premium MTBs such as the usual players like Specialized, Yeti, Santa Cruz, Ibis, YT, etc. They are just as costly (model and spec depending) and just as capable and have the backing from one of the big 3 bike manufacturers on the planet.

Pinkbike appeals to an international audience, I would say most of Europe, UK, Australia and NZ do know what a Mondeo is and appreciate the joke. Not sure what the equivalent North American vehicle would be, think boring and reliable.

As Fuel owner myself I personally don't like the new version. It's shifted too far from XC while the Top Fuel is still XC focused. The old Fuel EX was truly a do-it-all bike, something you could ride XC all day while still being burly enough for moderate lift riding. It will be interesting to see how their sales numbers respond now that they are focused on satisfying professional black diamond riders instead of staying true to their midwestern roots.

When you say “copy” do you mean the adjustability? Fair point, but that’s just like saying Tesla copied Mercedes because Tesla has wheels too. This function alone doesn’t define the Fuel Ex as a model, it’s a trend that many trail bikes follow these days, just maybe not to the degree that the Stumpy and the Fuel Ex do. I’m okay with this still being bike of the year, the Trek had to have many more tricks up its sleeve to earn that award.
@jaysealenduro5618

2 facts 1st. Trek > specialized reality ✔ 2nd. Copy? It's more like following whatever the usual trend going on mtb industry but FOR REAL trek generally is more known to be the more master Innovator in the first place both Road & MTB. And now the gen6 fuel ex is their first bike to feature trending features but trek have more original industry leading innovations, that cannot be copy by other brands cause those are trek exclusive. But talking about fuel ex own innovations look at the Gen 5 fuel ex it has its own Reaktiv shock, SSDT and etc. Trek's Mino link geo adjust is very old it already exist even before 2010 it's basically the very first geo adjust on a full sus mtb and from Boost 148 to super boost 157 those standards first existed on trek bikes! High pivot, ABP from basic, advanced to industry leading tech most of them are from TREK. That's why trek fuel ex gen6 really deserves to be awarded like the best "Trail bike" of the year not just because of the trending features but also trek's own innovation built on that bike like the abp which is better than Horst-link and OclvM. But for me personally i would rather choose the gen5 9.9 fuel ex. I don't like mtb that's too adjustable.

After ~25 years of riding and having ridden high pivots (Canfield Jedi) for 10+ years, I purchased the Norco Range. It's the worst bike I've ever owned. I'm really disappointed in pinkbike giving it accolades. It has numerous engineering problems and their support is appalling. It eats an idler ever 150-200 miles and they've been out of stock 6 months+ (I've gone through 5 and ridden the bike 800 miles). I've not been able to ride a $10k+ bike for the whole riding season. Norco is a JOKE. I hope this year's winner ends up being better for buyers. I know it's hard for organizations like pinkbike to ride a bike 500miles+ due to the volume of reviews they need to put out, but I wish someone was giving companies scores for how they treat their customers. The range may ride well, but the ownership experience sucks. I'll never buy another Norco product and I don't advise anyone else to either.

@@EverythingisFire Yea, it's a major bummer. I ride 50-60 miles in a heavily populated enduro style trail system in a mtb mecca. I see lot's of bikes and talk to a lot of people about ownership (I have 3 2022 enduro bikes - I love trying new things and I'm always looking at the next thing coming). Lot's of locals with issues with their Range HP, Range VLT, and Shore. I hear mostly good things about the Sight. Other bikes have issues too (ie: spec enduro frame failuers) - but pretty much everyone else I've heard of having mfr issues gets taken care of so they can keep riding. Norco can't even keep wear items in stock to keep people riding. I'm not expecting these parts for free or a warranty item, I just want to be able to buy them so I can ride my bike. They won't even sell them to you direct. They are telling everyone (in the US) to buy them from Fanatik or local dealers (my local dealers haven't been able to get any in months - I was able to get 3 spares early on but they didn't last). I live in a place I can ride 12 months of the year, but if I lived somewhere else I'd be PISSED because I haven't been able to get an idler since spring (effectively unable to ride the bike all year).

Ok Here we go😅 Price… I do not expect mountain bike of the year to be the “best value “ or … the “most proficient at all aspects of mountain biking. The most beautiful woman in the world is not the super model with the most magazine cover shots! Right? There are beautiful stunning women walking down the street carrying a USPS postal bag. The bikes considered for this should be price obtainable for most above 😮average skill level riders earning an average ( some above and some below) annual income. I think a Lamborghini could be the car of the year, but it’s so out of my league that I’ll watch the first 2 minutes of the segment and pause it, and click on Sam Pilgrim! “Droppin’”!
