Mountain King: Scariest Game Ever

Mountain King has a "hidden level" which can be reached by jumping from the tip of a ledge located on the mountain peak at the top of the game screen. Timed correctly, the player will catch the very bottom rung of a higher ladder.

LOL I love the bit when you get near the top, the bat steals your crown and you just stand there. Pissed. Oh and as for my nostalgia moment, the Spider definitely was shining moment of horror for me too. That's why I kept coming back!

This game is how I first discovered In the Hall of the Mountain King, and I still love that piece. I had this on my Atari 5200 and played it a whole lot. Also shit myself over that spider a few times.

The song was also whistled by Peter Lorre, in his depiction of a child murderer, in the 1931 Fritz Lang movie "M." That's still a potent movie now, 90+ years later.

The spider was scary as hell, but as you progressed further and further into the game, the spider would become more and more transparent, and its webs harder to escape, until you reached level 8. At that point the spider is completely invisible, except for its shadow moving across the diamonds, and its web is utterly impossible to escape. THAT is real fear.

This is one game where the 2600 version's sound was superior. When you collect the required number of diamonds and the music starts playing, it can be heard from much farther away and gradually increases in volume. Here, it seems to go from complete silence to really loud in the space of about half a screen.

The only other game with better sound on the 2600 I can think of is Demon Attack. The sound of the aliens coming in from both sides is soooooo much more impressive on the 2600.

Yep, quite accidently by jumping down from the top of the mountain, and rebounding off the lowest valley. The double jump launched you into the stratosphere and... No spoilers here, someone will just have to livestream it. XD

Sig Urther There's another one, and it isn't a glitch like what you're talking about. Those "RWM" letters at the bottom of the level, where the spider spawns, are the initials of the developer/programmer (forgot). You can see the top of a ladder poking out of that square next to the letters. If you manage to go down that ladder and then go left or right in a pattern I don't remember, you fall for a bit and land on the credits of the game.

The only thing missing in this game are more stages. Once you finally win, there’s nothing else to do. That said, a great experience. And, yes, that spider at the bottom is super scary.

@Karl Sebastian Sollenhag I used to collect games, most Atari 2600s I got worked (and I've had at least 8, maybe 10) but there was just _one_ Heavy Sixer (which was also the only heavy sixer I ever found in the wild thus far) that didn't play at all. Some of them (though they are few) really DO break.

I always liked mountain kings music in the beginning when it started before u played the game... Friend of mine made a copy of this game for my commodore 64... When u go to start the game.. U hear no music Just sounds picking up the diamonds... The more I was collecting diamonds, the music was growing louder & louder... It scared the shit out of me cause I'm looking around in my room saying.. where is that music coming from!?! I agree with some of u guys on the music part!! It sounds creepy!!

I think there's more of us who feared this game because I once heard a podcast clip where someone wanted to fire arrows into the bottom pit. I think the fear of the unknown and the crude graphics made it scary.

FTW this is not the Atari 2600 version. This is the Atari 5200 version. I actually like this version better then the ColecoVision version. I also think Montazuma's Revenge is better on the Atari 5200. You can actually control panama joe a lot easier. He doesn't run with a stick up his ass, and fly off ledges with the slightest touch of the joystick.
