The difficulty is that Trespasser promised a direct sequel, VG failed to deliver on that promise. I am uncertain as to why the art book was released, all it does is remind us of what could have been, and tbh I feel robbed.

Because BioWare thought gamers would be mature and intelligent enough to understand that concept art =/= game, and that you weren't robbed of anything. Concept art is just the process of brainstorming. Every DA game, every game period, is full of "what could have been" concept art.

@@BonusEggs4Sale why are you blaming the players? it’s not about maturity. the concept art shows a whole different game where previous choices and characters actually seem to matter much more than they do in the final project, and cool concepts overall. it’s ok to like veilguard, i do too, but you can’t blame those who mourn the story that never saw the light. some of us are attached to our world state, and seeing the concept art for joplin makes us wish it could’ve played a bigger part as it originally was meant to. again, i liked veilguard, but joplin looks more like the sequel i imagined. how is this immature?

@@BonusEggs4Sale Most of the stuff in the artbook was the literal narrative structure of the entire game. That's what everyone has been saying, there are narrative pieces that Bioware set up to COMPLETE the story and just didn't use them. The Artbook literally confirms what everyone has been saying: it's an incomplete and poorly written game.

Can you imagine how dire the political situation would have been, and how heartbreaking, if we were allowed to have the new Divine start a new exalted march to stop Solas, which would very likely have been interpretated to be against the elves considering the chantry's history- how this might have fed into more elves joining Solas's cause. On the top of that having a brewing war between the northern countries against the antaam. The absolute misery and decadence that would have been Minrathus with its slavery and class-divided society. I will forever mourn this.

Interesting but the fate of the elves (at least in Orlais) at the end of Inquisition is determined by the choices made in “Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts” and the Inquisitor’s race. It’s one of those complicated outcomes that BioWare tend to just drop without a seconds thought when they want to shift narrative direction. The ONLY way I could see a sizable number of elves fearing a new Exalted March would be if Gaspard was on the throne. Why? Celene is a reformer. Her slow pace of reform is what drove her and Briala apart, but she IS making visible progress. If she rules alone, the elves wouldn’t have reason to fear a march. Briala as the power of the throne speaks for itself. No need for them to worry… as long as the Inquisitor is an elf. If not, things go bad in Orlais after Trespasser And obviously a reunited Celene and Briala, winners of a war against Corypheus and at the head of an Orlais now once more in ascendancy and growing in power, leads to the best outcome for the elves. I mean Celene raises Briala to the nobility as Marquis of the Dales, the FIRST elf to EVER gain this kind of power and recognition. Considering how… mid.. Veilguard’s story ended up being, leaving this particular part of the story of the elves alone is probably for the best anyway. Edit: Also, I think it would have been poetic for Solas, letting his pride blind him to how much better off the elves are in a reformed Orlais are than they were in his time. Instead of helping the elves, he would return them to slavery to the remaining Evanuris.

Seeing concept art of the Divine sending ships after Solas is kind of heartbreaking. All the politics and religion from Inquisition is just gone in Veilguard, and I desperately miss it, this concept art looks more darker, grittier, i wish they stuck with this. ONE of Veilguard's biggest flaws is they did the equivalent of what would've happened if they gave us the Andromeda plotline in place of Mass Effect 3. What about the Geth and Quarians? What about the Krogan and the Genophage? What happened with all the plot threads we set up with the Reapers in Mass Effect 1-2? Don't worry about that, we're gonna move on to a completely new galaxy that barely has anything to do with quarians or Reapers, etc. Instead of waiting until we've finished the story that got us here first.
@lordofgingers
@lordofgingers 18 күн бұрын
That’s justified though because it’s a new galaxy. To expect the events of the Milky Way to have a material impact on Andromeda is a bit much imo. (Unless they develop intergalactic relays But compared to that, yea. This is more difficult to grapple with
@stuffdude6212
@stuffdude6212 18 күн бұрын
@lordofgingers not unless the goal of the story was for the audience to follow the MC to the Andromeda galaxy from the beginning. The purpose of Mass Effect 1-2 is to set up a series of problems for the audience to solve in Mass Effect 3. Which is why they gave us ME 3 before completely switching galaxies. In that case as with Dragon Age, the story was unfinished. The events of DA 1-3 affected all of Thedas and were supposed to be put to rest in 4 before moving on to something new. For Mass Effect, only when the story with the OG Trilogy was wrapped up would Andromeda work by standing apart from the other games in a new galaxy. Which is why it was structured that way, in their case Andromeda was just poor execution. Unfortunate. In essence, imagine they tried to separate themselves with Andromeda before giving us Mass Effect 3 and handled it poorly. That's what Veilguard did. It's like they tried to give us step 5-6 before giving us step 4 when it would've been much easier to just give us step 4 and then move on from there.

Honestly there is one thing I am surprised isn't in this artbook. The Magister Sidereal. The lack of Corypheus is understandable (although meeting him in the Fade, now powerless and somehow humbled would be amazing), but I am surprised they never considered bringing back the Architect, especially because they toyed with the idea of an Awakened Darkspawn. And then there is the remaining five. How could would it be if the Augur of Mysteries or the Watchman of Night appeared in the game with their unique knowledge of the black city, the blight etc. We could even have some cool Ammon Jerro Neverwinter Nights 2-style of a plot twist, where one of them serves as an antagonist, but after being defeated by us (and possibly betrayed by Solas/Evanuris) they could become a late-game companion like Loghain in Origins. Veilguard deserved weird-ass companions and an ancient darkspawn is as weird as it gets (I desperately need a Darkspawn companion).

Man, the concept arts of HoF and whoever was left in the fade hit me so deeply. See, in my canon playthrough my Cousland Hero of Ferelden (a very cold and pragmatic politician by the name of Vane) became king-consort of Ferelden with Loghain replacing Alistair and becoming his father-in-law. In my head these two grew to really respect each other and turned Ferelden into a nation half-ran by the Grey Wardens until the events of Inquisition, when HoF enbarked on his quest and Loghain ended up left in the Fade. It would personally mean so much to me to be able to bring the story of these two Ferelden war heroes to the end.

The two biggest crimes in Veilguard are the loss of connection with Thedas as a whole and the severe lack of Elves! In the past the last DLC in a Bioware game heavily implied the direction of the next game. Solas should’ve had zealot followers HE didn’t even agree with, so the Revwhatsherface should’ve been utilized at least for a quest or two. The Inquisitor should’ve remained at least a powerful ally who you send and receive updates from, and even receive agents to assist you as Trespasser implied would happen. I wanted MORE ancient Elvhen, more reasons why in the beginning even Elgar’nan WAS a shining golden leader. Last thing: who was chosen as Divine was meant to be such a major decision in Inquisition that choice needed to be reflected. Besides, in all of history, wouldn’t a rebellion of Elves in the mythical forest of Thedas be a cause for an Exalted March called by the Divine??

Solas pitting Tevinter and the Antaam against each other while Rook is caught in the middle trying to catch up to Solas was exactly the game I was wanting for DA4. While I am happy with how Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain use their power to use and recruit the Venatori and Antaam, it would've been so cool to have been caught in between the Tevinter and Qunari war while trying to stop Solas. My hope for Dragon Age 5 is that they reuse a lot of their ideas from Joplin, mainly focusing on the Qunari and Tevinter war, but rework it so that instead of Solas pitting the two nations against each other, it's the Executors/Those Across the Sea that pit the two nations against each other as they try to recover from the events of Veilguard.

This is the 2nd game where they wanted to add the hero of ferelden. Please bioware just give us thof and have them do cool shit. But for real this art book is what most people expected this game to be the past 10 years and it makes veilguard seem shallow in almost all aspects and definitely feels like the wrong direction for the series especially compared to this. It feels souless and safe when compared to this and the art has so much passion in it. And seeing the degradation of this game I'm worried for the future of this series and mass effect.

I start this by saying that I enjoy Veilguard a lot. I'm on my third playthrough and have played about 190 hours total. I _mourn_ what we could have had. I still don't understand why they didn't include more from the previous games. And I don't buy the reasons that they have told the media. The Inquisitior should have been way more involved. I feel like they nuked southern Thedas just to close this story and move on. Honestly, without the Solavellan ending I would probably dislike the game a lot more. It should have been a direct sequel. We all wanted to know more about Solas. Instead, they put him aside for bad, cliche villains. Solas was the perfect villain, an old friend that is not evil, so much that many of us wanted him to succeed. The freaking god of betrayal, keeping us on our toes, outsmarting us all the way. If I was involved, I would fire the writer and the game director of Bioware on the spot. Veilguard is an abomination and the biggest opportunity lost. The stage has been set up perfectly over 3 games. And they wasted sooo much.

Politics. I wanted politics, because they make our decisions matter. Choose what group you want to help you against Solas: The Venatori while endorsing a coup with Calpernia revolutionary radical tendencies, the sanitized pointless rebellion(That endorsed a fucking new ARCHON) from the Shadow Dragons or the full might of the strongest Magisters in the world, Tevinter Imperium Government. You could even argue (in a decent game, of course) that endorsing the Imperium is the best outcome, since they have military strength and higher chances of beating Solas and AVOIDING a cataclysm that would kill everyone. You could also argue that you would oppose the Imperium later when everyone is safe. But no, to the developers, choices matter because it shows a telltale like pointers saying some character remembers you said something nice to them.

22:14 Not really seeing many bring it up but in art it shows Harding with Bianca, likely meaning Varric was always planned to be killed early on and Harding be the one to take up her friend's weapon. It is a shame DA4 had resources pulled to try and fix Anthem, because if they were allowed to continue I bet we would have had a game much closer to this concept work. It is so disappointing too because the concept art shows the Dragon Age game that fans were expecting, instead of the polished turd that we got. The spy commando team is a great idea and makes more sense as to why you have such a small group, initially out to stealthfully stop Solas, only for things to get more out of hand with the other gods coming back. I know personally, if the Dragon Age franchise were to continue, I would prefer if Veilguard was treated as non-canon. Because where it leaves off leaves most of Thedas destroyed and blighted. Maybe have Varric start the game by reading the Vielguard's plot from an in-universe novel, casting it aside before things start. From there it would be great if they followed more ideas from the concept art, especially since they seemed to have a solid blueprint to the story there.

Solas acting out of character I don't think is a bad thing. Remember, Solas implied that he knew he would have to become a monster in order to achieve his goals and atone for the Ancient Elves. That's why he denies romanced Lavellan when she begs to go with him. He didn't want her to see the monster he became, both literally and figuratively. Even in the books, comics, and the end of Trespasser he started to utilize more ruthless tactics. He even admitted that if he still had his orb he wouldn't be resorting to any of this. So I do think it was out of character, but by design. We're talking about a guy who's resolved himself to do/ endure whatever it takes to fix his mistakes, no matter how morbid.

I'm still both angry & sad that Veilguard didn't allow for importing World States from Inquisition. I felt robbed when I first heard about that, especially after seeing all the effort the previous Dragon Age developers put into making sure that at least SOME of your decisions from Origins & Dragon Age 2 could be imported via Dragon Age Keep! There were also decisions in Inquisition that still should've impacted Veilguard as well, such as who you chose for the Divine. The only countries that decision wouldn't affect are Tevinter & possibly Rivain! All the other countries in the game would be affected by that decision in some way! Some imported decisions from the Dragon Age series would've impacted Veilguard as well, such as Morrigan's Dark Ritual. It would've meant that a THIRD Elven "god" (AKA another member of the Evanuris) would've been alive in Veilguard! Not because we want to see that (out of some of masochisms or sadism) but especially *RIGHT NOW* there is this great divide of the 1% vs....everyone else. So I wonder if they got marching orders from the EA executives to remove the "political" rhetoric regarding our own economic imbalances. And the worst part is that we can't even go back to this later since the game effectively undoes Tevinter entirely with a single line at the end of the Magisterium being wiped out.

Biggest thing with Joplin for me, is based on what they set up for DA5, if we get it, the seafaring nature of some of those concepts will be perfect to dig back up. And they should imo lol. Bring back some of those concepts, and tbh, two of those scrapped companions I think would be perfect for the next installment, Imshael and the Saarebas turned spy. I could see Imshael just sitting back, biding their time as the whole Evanuris, Solas stuff goes down.

There was a lot more planned that probably tied in a lot better with previous games for core fans before they decided on what we got now. When I heard about multiple endings, I didn't finish the game and waited to watch them on KZbin. I honestly thought one of them would have been if you didn't do any of your companion's quests, got weak and all factions, you'd get the worst ending possible. Rook gets killed having no one, and Solas ultimately tears down the Veil. Nope. It would have been nice to see what Rook and LI did afterwards. Just two flowers (me and Emmrich) and I was like, "that's it? I wanna know what they did afterwards." Definitely the first DA game where there were no betrayals at all. It would have been interesting if a LI broke off with you based on a decision like with Cullen in Inquisition, one I can immediately think of, Emmrich. Say you turn him into a lich, he'd break up with you as he'll be immortal, as to not wanting to be attached due to you dying.

As I have said in other KZbin channels commenting on this topic, it reminds me of the dark energy ending talk on ME3. It’s this thing we never got and it looks greener but would it have been greener. Perhaps marginally. The key ingredients imo were David Gaider and Mike Laidlaw. Something internally is going on at the culture at BioWare (either as a result of BioWare itself or EA influence) that just made these two guys and others like them go “yup…I’m out” I empathize with the idea that people work a certain way and when you don’t give them the creative freedom to work…well….

It lacked something in the end like that. I mean the game lacked a lot but this would actually make me feel something after that finale... 10 years was definitely enough to make something so big and awesome that was presented in the concept arts...all of this was our expectation after Trespasser reveals...

The biggest problem was the damn combat system! And EA in relation to it. EA desperately wanted DA4 to be a live service game. So hard they scrapped all these great concepts and pushed the developers into live service. By the time they FINALLY got the message: namely WE DO NOT GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT LIVE SERVICE, they had already gotten too far with their live service style gameplay that there was no way to backtrack and reincorporate all the concepts without changing the combat altogether. And they had already spent YEARS on this game to start all over. They had no choice but to give us what we got. It really is sad. Because i do genuinely like the game, combat and lore (Act 3 alone is phenomenal). But i don't love it. I don't love what they did to my favorite franchise, and it is heartbreaking. I've actually been taking a break from the game over and over to escape the monotony. And ironically playing Medieval Dynasty.

It's neat to see what might have been, but I try not to let it overshadow what is. Even had they gone straight into developing the game, we might not have been happy with those results either. What we get are concept pieces and moments. What we likely would have gotten was an even larger open world filled with even more meaningless fetch quests that placed hours of busy work between some (possibly) great moments. I'm sure half of those concepts would have been scrapped due to various difficulties or tech restraints. After all, the game would have been aiming for the previous generation of hardware (PS4, Xbox One). On the other hand, we could also be grateful that they back peddled on the live-service multi-player game they shifted to. For all its faults, I think Dragon Age: The Veilguard turned out better than a fantasy Anthem would have.

Ultimately I blame EA and the other executive types for holding back the developers who were clearly so passionate about the game. Having worked in game development myself, it's just the same old story recycled again and again as the executive suite just DOESN'T understand that if you let your creative team do what they're passionate about, you will have the critical success you want. When I look through the art book all I see was amazing concepts that some higher up thought was too risky. That could have jeopardized their sales. The issue, so to speak, is related to the fact that in 10 years a lot of folks came and left, some laid off, some on their own volition, which is normal to be honest, but once you have a new team, led by new managers, is understandable how they want to make the story their own. Some folks say they lost faith in Bioware, I partially disagree, I think there's a lot of talented folks also in the current Bioware, but they should turn the page on previous IPs and be allowed to develop a new one of their liking. Unfortunately thou we are speaking of AAA publishers who at their higher ranks still dream of becoming Hollywood (sat in meetings with some of these folks), and we all know how risk and creative averse that environment is.

I feel like they should try to incorporate and expand veilguard because while the game is good, it could be better with some of the incorportions. They already planned to have Ghilan'nain and Elgar'nan awake, bring titan lore into play, have Kal-Sharok dwarves make their appearance. They can open the route to letting the veil fall, seeing the titans, getting all the details the scrapped projects would have brought. The lighthouse could still be the base because if Solas has to wind up teaming with us in those projects, its just like him to bring our protagonist somewhere safer like a base hes been to (skyhold, the lighthouse). Those companions could still be valuable allies. I think if the player chooses Taash to be more qunari, we should get Sten as an advisor and someone that would oversee them joining. And if the player chose them to be more rivainy, Isabela would be yhe advisor, but we would still get both as an alliance. Having ships or submarines don't really seem dragon age to me personally because the Eluvains have been in the game since Origins and i think they should still be the form of transportation. I think they shouldnt just dump the game where it is now because if they want the game to do better and to continue to better themselves as a company, they should keep trying to add, fix, take REAL constructive criticism, and make everyone happy and not just a handful of people happy. The game has potential to be amazing, but they need to take the advice and look into it if they want to keep customers coming back

A reocurring thing in the art is the skimpiness (some of it abused slaves, but also just across the board). You can really tell that the later devs picking up the pieces really turned away from all that- they did away with all the grime and seediness for a more sanitised and less offensive approach. And at the risk of inviting hate - they deliberately flipped Taash into being way more masculine/less conventionally attractive to add in the whole non-binary aspect of their character. I highly doubt that was on the radar when the original designs first started , and even then I trust that they would have been more subtle with it being a slowburn story rather than it feeling like a very modern day morality take on it. Harding also seems a lot more stoic too. The un-used Morrigan/Isabella/Sten/Calpernia/Cole designs and returns would have been so good. As well as the DA Awakening darkspawn potential ally? What's really weird to me is that neither Fenris or Merill seem present at all despite how one could imagine how massively the plotline would have impacted them. Maybe Bioware is keeping their specific stuff under wraps

The game was very underwhelming, it looked great at times but it didn't feel like Dragon Age to me. Also it is suppose to be an rpg, yet I felt whatever answer or reply you gave in dialogue, you got the same outcome, there was no consequence. The dialogue was often terrible and immature, I wanted my character to joke, but the jokes never came, even with the option to joke, she didn't joke. Taash was the worst character I've have ever encountered in a game, yet I was forced to agree with her temper tantrums and delusions, you weren't given any option to push back on her or tell her to shut up, you were forced to agree with her, I wanted to agree with Taash's mother but wasn't allowed to, that is not rpg, and I could tell that Taash's character was added into the game late in production probably because Taash was a self insert from the game director.

Having Veilguard be a more action orientated game I think is more of Bioware doing the best of what they have. Bioware was forced to make all of their games with the frostbite engine by EA starting with Inquisition. Frostbite is mainly built for FPS and action oriented games and not tactical rpg's. They've stated multiple times that the tactical mode with Inquisition was the best they could do with the engine and it took a lot of resources and they still weren't 100% happy with the execution. So delving more into the action playstyle was probably what they thought was best to make a functioning game with what they have. They've apparently been giving approval to build the next mass effect on a different engine, but by then Veilguard was already well into development.

@@FortressofApathy My bad for not writing it down, to me it was obvious that the writing and why the characters are there should be good and make sense. Let me rephrase and expand on my comment: If they had built the game on previous characters and as so also on previous choises, we wouldn't have the problems we now have. Isabela is a good example. She is there probably only because they had planned for so long for her to give you the homebase ship. But the plans changed and for the story she isn't needed. Dorian has a little bit of a role, but he should have been our guide to Tevinter politics. (People usually are on good terms with Dorian so he could have also been sending messages to the Inquisitor with the sending crystal.) For some reason the devs decided that slavery and Tevinter politics aren't something they should focus on so now Dorian just kind of is there but isn't important. And relating to slavery: If you let Calpernia live, she vowvs to return to Tevinter and make things better. They should have written a slave rebellion into the game and used Calpernia in it. There should have been a difference between Morrigan who has a kid and Morrigan doesn't. I refuse to belive that childless Morrigan would have reacted the same way as Morrigan who has raised Kieran. Learning about Mythal's spirit was such a important part of Morrigan's story but now it feels like it wasn't a big deal at all. Morrigan and the spirit (memories) of Mythal should have had some kind of friction and we should have been able to affect how they come along. Cole is another character I refuse to believe wouldn't try to help. There should have been a quest where he helps you understand Solas. Maybe he would have been included when the memories are revealed? Because now Harding is the only one who has known Solas from Inquisition and even she doesn't really know him. Cole could have given a different perpective on the memories. Or they could have had the Inquisitor be there as well. ALSO, Cole could literally have gone the change from spirit to flesh. He could have given so much insight on it! These are some of my ideas.😊

I've heard they actually gave Bioware a lot of room on this. Bioware makes plenty of bad choices that aren't from the publisher and they should commit to being better

I feel you and kinda agree that Veilguard feels like a missed opportunity in some aspects. From what you've shown of the art book I wish we had the naval/submarine base, more of the Quari and the elves following Silas, more of Tevinter immorality. After seeing the tranquil end for Solas I'm kinda interested in seeing how it would've been handled though

i feel like bioware has so many good concepts but very poor execution. idk if they have the chops to write and execute these concepts. like i cant help but feel like we got a marvel movie instead of a dragon age game. i remember feeling so uncomfortable making decisions in previous games and each of the characters going in shockingly unexpected ways. i REALLY wanted to be shocked. the singular choice that HAS to kill off someone was literally a marvel script….. when they said “whatever it takes” i was like they cant be serious….. such a frustrating franchise to root w such cool world building but veilguard was more like a fanfic selectively carrying forward some established lore and abandoning some for convenience idk….

I think there is a corporate person (assuming it’s not the director of the game) that stepped in and imposed creative limits (because money) It would explain why writers are leaving . “Here make the game but do it like this”

I think as disappointed as some people are at Veilguard, there is no chance we would've received a better game and things could've been even worse. Things change normally from concept art to the final product even during the best development cycles. With EA's obsession with live-service elements even if Joplin's development hadn't been rebooted, there is still chance that need for live-service elements, coupled with the requirements for Anthem's development, would have messed up with how much Joplin could accomplish. It wasn't until years after Joplin was reportedly rebooted, if I recall the Scheirer articles point out it happened around 2018, that EA realized that with the success of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order single-player games could still be profitable for them. And by then it was already 2020, and Joplin had already been cancelled in favor of project Morrison, a live-service game. Which itself got shifted into Veilguard, a single-player RPG. But even if Joplin hadn't been cancelled there is no way it would have gone through all of that unscathed, I know some people like to act we like in the darkest timeline because Veilguard was disappointing to them, but the real dark timeline is one in which Jedi Fallen Order is a commercial failure and EA keeps insisting on having live-service elements in every one of their games to the detriment of their quality. In which case, we would have received Anthem with Dragons instead of Veilguard. Which was the original idea for Project Morrison. I do not want to come across as someone who hates live-service games, I think they can be great and have their place in the industry. I played SWTOR for 10 years and that is among my favorite games of all time, and the only reason I no longer play it every day is because of its lack of support from the publisher. And SWTOR itself is a great example of how live-service games can have great and compelling stories, rich worldbuilding, choices that matter within the confines of an online game that is constantly ongoing. That said, not every game needs to be one, and DA4 definitely shouldn't have been one. So, in spite of Veilguard's trouble development I think the fact we got the game we got out of it is a miracle. I love Veilguard's story, I have yet to play it myself but I watched it all through KZbin as well as read the codex entries online, there is definitely missed potential in some places that could've made Veilguard from a good game to a great game, to me the lack of imported world choices especially are what's missing the most. They brought a lot of flavor to this world and I think ultimately that impacted several areas of the game, we can't deal with the Chantry because if we do we'd have to deal with who is the White Divine, we can't deal too deeply with returning characters because if we do we might run into issues with continuity, we can't have characters that can die returning because then we run into more continuity issues. But, in spite of all of this I genuinely loved Veilguard's story and found a fitting end for Solas' character arc. With a good cast of companions, even if I don't think all of their arcs are great all of them are at the very least good in my opinion. And I find the endings for Solas far more fitting than him becoming a Tranquil, yes there is poetic justice there considering what he did with the Titans but at the same time I feel like the 4 endings we got with him in Veilguard fit him far more. His atonement is far more powerful if he can feel his emotions, as he grapples with the Blight within the Black City, and if he's a Tranquil he won't feel any of that, Solas being a former spirit and reacting accordingly to your choices also makes a lot of sense considering one of the earliest conversations with him is about how Spirits of the Fade react according to your expectations of them. If you expect a Spirit of Wisdom to be good then it will be good, if you expect it to be a Demon of Pride then it'll react accordingly. I mourn what could have been, but when it comes to playing the game whenever it happens I believe I will thoroughly enjoy it.
