In the mid 70s, whenever I'd have this song cranked on my stereo, my mom, a 5' Japanese woman who loved going to the dance clubs in the late 40s and 50s, would break out doing the jitterbug to this tune! Yes, the jitterbug!! I'd bust out laughing and ask her, "Why do you always start dancing whenever I play this song?" and she replied, "I can't help it, It makes me do it!!" She's been gone since 2000, but every time I hear this song, it reminds me of her and I can't help but laugh and smile. P.S. Love the fact that the lead has a missing tooth and not giving a damn! Real life...real music.

Band was named Mountain cuz the lead singer, Leslie West, is a mountain of a man. He was also my neighbor in Santa CRuz, Ca in the mid-70s. Me and my friend were teenagers we'd go over to his place, smoke a bowl, and he showed us his extensive butterfly collection. Man had over 100 preserved butterflies and knew all their names!

Thats interesting...I always heard they got their name, at least partially. Because back in the day Leslie West was the size of a mountain. Over 300 pounds at one point, but then lost enough to look perfectly "normal", you know what I mean i'm not fat-shaming. Anyway I think that lifestyle contributed to him getting diabetes & losing a leg later in life, not sure. Anyway, sorry for rambling, your comment just got me to thinking, thanks man!

In Miami back in 1970 our band opened up Janis Joplin, BB King, Jethro Tull, Mountain and a few others. We opened for Mountain twice. Felix, the Bass player, also worked for Atlantic/Atco as an East coast talent scout. Long story, but he was going to sign our band in 6 months, but two months later our singer was killed. Still some great memories. I recall that Lesli's little finger seemed as big as a normal persons thumb, but he kicked ass on guitar. This version isn't the same as the record and other live versions which, to me are quite a bit better.

I saw Mountain at a huge nightclub in North Tampa in 77. Leslie West was so big his guitar strap kept coming off his guitar. He got so pissed he smashed his guitar on stage.

Leslie West, this has always been one of my top 5 Rock and Roll songs. Leslie got his tooth fixed and lost a lot of weight. Because of his weight he had diabetes and had to have one of his legs amputated. He died a few years ago.

Okay 😁 I got you on this one😁 A lot of people believed this to be a one hit wonder, not so! What the truth was, this man singing was the creator. He could have gone so much further. But, here was the problem. Leslie the lead man, he had 2 problems. One he drank and partook of incidentals, in fact so much so, no one could keep up with him, and the man did not pass out either. It was big challenge he bet on others to tryin keep up, no one could. Second he had a tremendous temper, but more than that, this man Loved nothing better than to fist fight , anybody and he usually took on more than one at a time. Promoters, djs, band members, rodeys, or the audience. Then after he's be happy and your friend. So, for that reason they were afraid to promote him on the concert ticket for fear of him getting on stage and maybe dying , right there because of his use of intoxicants, or start a riot fight with an entire collosium. However, because of his amazing talents they worked with him on many other productions. He even had a guitar designed with his name, He helped in creating amplifiers, all types of equipment, material musical riffs, songs. Finally after sereval decades he was able to do some touring, without getting into trouble,😊 When I was a kid, there would always be some dj and a musical guest on the radio with some new story about Leslie West, and beating some fools @$$🤣 Picking people up literally tossing grown men across a bar room ,😂 So there you have it, he could have gone so much further than just a few hits, But he said he just loved the high life and didn't want to stop bare knuckling🤷‍♀️

This was from Hershey Pennsylvania from The Show, a program put on by the newly formed PBS television company. They gathered 57 artist who were popular and invited high school-age kids to attend and listen to the artist to address the political and social issues of the day. This was in the fall of 1969 and is the same program that the Grand Funk Railroad live performance of Inside Looking Out was from, as well as the first television appearance of Jerry Jeff Walker singing Mr. Bo Jangles, which he wrote as well as Deon singing Abraham, Martin and John, and too many other great acts to list. I have four parts of the show saved that I found on KZbin.

Back in the day, 'Power Trio' was a term used to describe bands like this (no disrespect to the keyboard player). The bass player did eventually go deaf, then he was shot dead by his angry wife after coming home late at night. I would not be surprised if the Muppet drummer was inspired by this drummer. I saw them 1974 New Years Eve Felt Forum NYC. One of the best shows ever (and one hell of a New Years Eve). They ended the show with Mississippi Queen and Corky Lang the drummer on the downbeat would ping his stick off his cymbal at an angle that it would shoot out into the audience...grab another and keep doing it...aiming where he wanted it to go. And just to prove he had full control of where it went on the final note of the song he pinged it off the cymbal and it went straight up came down and Leslie West with out missing a beat reaches behind himself with his right hand ..catches the stick....gives it a spin and tosses it out in the audience. 😲🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
