I'm glad you enjoyed I've been listening to that song for decades. Black girl here, who was adopted by hippies in the 70s! There's so much music out there from that time in the 60s and the 70s that is ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING! In all genres of music. I'm so glad I grew up one with a musical family and a huge one at that. My parents had three kids biological adopted three and had 37 foster kids. Of all different nationalities so I heard EVERYTHING!!! You name it I've probably listened to it or have it in my collection.

Felix Pappalardi is the bassist. He produced records for Cream. After that he put mountain together and provided the structure leslie West required to be commercially viable. The album "climbing" is one my favorites. I like every song, particularly: theme from an imaginary western. The song was also a highlight at woodstock, in my opinion. Flowers of evil & one last cold kiss are also great hidden mountain gems. I am old, I have over 500 records, I hope they dont wind up in a dumpster.

The "legend" is that the drummer Corky Laing was playing a gig in Nantucket (hence the sleighride, right?) and there was a blackout. He stared pounding out that awesome drum sequence and was screaming "MISSISSIPPI QUEEN...IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN" while some girl was just dancing it out on the stage. He brought it to Leslie and he did the licks and the lyrics. History, baby.

The distinctive tone and vocals of this song are famous 50 years later, no end in sight! If you think you know what MOUTIAN sounds like by listening to MISSASIPPI QUEEN , you have only heard half of the range they offer..... Nantucket Sleighride shows off the other lead singer (Felix Pappalardi) Mountain had to offer! To hear Lesli West and Felix Pappalardi sing together you MUST listen to FOR YASGER"S FARM, sweet and hard by turn through the song, very NICE!

I started playing guitar at 16. Mississippi Queen was one of the first songs I learned how to play. It holds a special place in my heart. The song is just irresistible. I mean what kid didn't want to pound that riff and stroke those leads while getting into his primal man chest voice to proclaim his love for the Mississippi Queen? You don't need supplements to boost testosterone. Just play Mississippi Queen. It's that great.

I don't know whether anyone mentioned this far below, but Leslie West showed up to do this song and he was looking for an amp that would break-up (distort) a lot. He was expecting a Hi-Watt, but the amp his sound guy sent him was an old original Acoustic (co. name, not like unplugged) PA (public address, as in an amp for the house [venue]). The Acoustic PA amp had all K88 power tubes. When Leslie plugged in, he couldn't believe how much sweet overdrive (distortion) that amp put out. That is the amp that made Leslie West's signature sound. Today, you just buy effects for everything. Some amp companies actually combine tube (valve) pre-amplifiers with solid state (transistors) power amps, and they over dribe the pre-amp for distortion. This results in a thin, cringy, nasty distortion-- not at all like what happens when power amp tubes distort. You can tell it's a set of K88's breaking up by the monstrously heavy, yet warm and appealing distortion.

Mr. Boyd, thank you for playing and reacting to this song. Even though it only peaked at #21 on the charts, everyone listening to music in 1970 remembers this song. It's a beloved song. It's so gratifying to watch you really appreciate this song, and this band. Totally non-sequitur, but when I think of the truly beloved songs of 1970, (not the super famous songs, or the #1 songs, but the beloved songs), I think of Band of Gold by Freda Payne. Peaked at #3, but, again, everyone who lived during that era loves this song.

They paid homage to Mr. West in a book called 'Jews Who Rock', check it out. Mountain's fourth gig was Woodstock 1969. Leslie was in the studio cutting tracks when Hendrix was, and Jimi was kind enough to come over and sample what had been put down and thought it was great. Leslie was on cloud nine for weeks after that encounter.

I’m 55 and this song is older the me, I think it is underrated. I do know it made Woodstock music festival. I heard this song many times by different singers. Thanks for sharing. The Mississippi queen was a steam powered river paddle boat. There is a paddle boat that is called the Mississippi queen in New Orleans, I think it’s the fifth boat to carry the name. The original song had a lot more lyrics.

Mountian [band] was primarily southern rock, like Allman brothers, Leonard skynard, etc..Most of the southern rock/blues was derived [most of it] from black southern blues players !! they were/are the roots o0f all of this genre/style of music !! Another band to check out, if you have not already is "Grand Funk Railroad" they were from this era & leaned more toward rock music, but no one was more soulful/blues singing than Mark Farner, singer for Grand Funk !!

Dreams of Milk and Honey from their LP Flowers of Evil is my favorite track by Mountain together with Stormy Monday (the long live recording). The playing of Leslie West (guitar) and Felix Pappalardi (bass) and how they support each other is absolutely amazing. Surprised nobody else mention these two songs? Many different versions of Milk and Honey but the one on Flowers of Evil is outstanding. It starts at 8:55.......before it's a guitar solo. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYKlgnmObNd0fJo kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoPWiaZqbrBmorc

Leslie West is Mountain. What a power band they were, a fantastic lineup, and sadly not in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. Leslie has some of the best rock riffs of all time. Big Sunn Coliseum Pa heads and cabs, a guitar cord, and a 1954 Gibson Les Paul Jr with a single p-90 pickup. Not a lot of gear to get that great sound.
