I’d like to verify that these can definitely handle -zero and packed in snow and covered in icicles as my Mountain Fire did through the Artic and Siberian blasts here in Oklahoma as of recent. Since then I have added 2 Flaming Silver and 1 Katsura Pieris’. I’ve seen them cloud pruned and it’s jaw dropping 😍 Thank you Jim!

Thanks for confirming that these leafy evergreens can withstand your cold temperatures. We just got a Flaming Silver for our zone 6b garden but I am always somewhat skeptical about leafy evergreens. I wanted something else other than Mountain Laurels, Boxwoods etc.

@@Carl-iw9sy Really like Paul T, I’ll watch that. Thank you…listen, gotta tell you in case you haven’t seen yet. Lowes has got Pieris right now sm 1 gal $11 and 3 g. Mt Fire and Valley Rose. I found one that’s a killer for cold and full sun you may like. Blue Ice Bog Rosemary Rhododendro Everestisanum. Down to zone 3. Flowering evergreen. I got one. Going for more for in between my Japanese maples etc. cheers

Jim, Zone 9b, Foley, AL - planted this Pieris in an “alley like” walkway on the north side of my house. Between the house & the wooden fence, it gets maybe 2 hours of sun. Its doing great so far; bloomed for almost 2 months.

I do love mine. Although this year I only got one bloom, last year it bloomed much more. It is in a container and might try to plant it in the brought where it can get a bit more sun.

At local garden center, I had a choice between Mountain Snow and Valley Valentine. Since I live in the Mountain State in the Mid-Ohio Valley, I struggled to choose. I went with Valley Valentine and put it in a very large pot near my front porch. I don't think it survived over winter....the seriously colder than average blast took it. What is supposed to be evergreen, now looks everbrown. I am waiting to see any sign of life before I remove it, but not holding onto much hope. :-( They are gorgeous and deer resistent, which is why I chose it.

I saw this plant and fell in love with it at a big box store. Then I saw it only went to zone 8 when I am 9a Florida. Wondering if it would do well here or not?

Almost all the buds crisped up and died on mine over the winter. I have about 3 blooms. :( I had thought the very cold/windy snap we got before Christmas did them in (shenandoah valley of VA zone 6B) , but I’m not sure - maybe I am doing something else wrong. I had it planted in a spot that was too wet so I moved it to a spot with better drainage in the late fall. Maybe I planted it too low in the ground.

I've tried growing a dwarf pieris in a planter two times, but I ended up killing them each time within a few months. I think the challenge was trying to keep the soil at the right moisture level. What would be a good soil mixture for growing a pieris in a container?
