Good question! There were a couple of reasons. Firstly we did not know the condition of the waterproof seal on the pond. If we went too hard and damaged this then it would be a very expensive fix. Secondly we hope to improve the conditions of the pond over time. No point just scrubbing algae every few months if you don’t solve the problem. We looked at improving the filtration and adding a slimmer which will stop the excess in nutrients which is feeding the algae in the first place. This will solve the issue long term

I've tried quite a few different water lillies in ponds with koi that size and the only one I could keep going long term was 'Marliacea Chromatella', the attention from the fish was just too much, very easy for a browsing carp to break off all the young shoots. I must have tried at least a dozen different varieties. The only difference I can think of is that Chromatella has a pineapple shaped rhizome. Some of the others might work if you can grow them to huge plant size, and thus very vigorous, before putting in the koi pond (or get them established when the fish are still small, not an option here, obviously). Also, the basket size might still be too small. I don't know if you said how many litres but they looked pretty small to me. A bulldozing carp can easily move small baskets so you might find them on the base of the pool next time you visit! 20 litres ought to be big enough basket size to remain in place (hopefully), ordinary garden loam or clay in the bottom and then the same size stones you used in layers on top. Good luck!
@Mountain_Aquatics
@Mountain_Aquatics Жыл бұрын
These are a smaller type of Lilly, we hope the koi will leave them alone long enough for them to establish
@maf2001
@maf2001 Жыл бұрын
@@Mountain_Aquatics Good luck with that but I don't hold out much hope for them with that many carp in the pond. If I was running a business like yours I would buy in lillies, plant them up in the 35cm wide baskets, grow them on for a year or so in a koi-less pond to build up strength. Once they were strongly growing and potentially koi proof you could easily quadruple the price of a small lilly and people would pay.

Hi ,you have done a wonderful job with this pond. The fish will have a much better life now. May I ask though if it is the Koi's natural behaviour to sift through the pebbles and mud ,why is nothing provided for the fish in this great big pond. They don't have anything to sift through now that you have put big pebbles on. ??😮

That green colour that you can still see, I'm guessing that's mostly because of moss or algea on the floor and walls of the pond, rather than in the water itself. The water looks quite clear.

my koi were DIGGING with a vengeance. turned the pond black in an afternoon. (i had soil topped with pea gravel. NOPE. not good enough. currently am doing flagstone chunks on top of that.) --v surprised you can do a soil-less planting. hadn't heard that anywhere before now. tho i DO have one that came in as just the root and it is indeed growing just floating in the water. (have it in a tub just inside the pond as a holdover till i could get to it.

Quick question, I want to put plants in my pond but my problem is I've 2 Grass Carp, any solutions to stopping then eating the plants before they can establish themselves?
@Mountain_Aquatics
@Mountain_Aquatics Жыл бұрын
Depends what plants you’re adding. Grass carp gents bad rap but sometimes it depends on individual fish. Do you have anywhere else to grow them first? How about some plastic mesh?
@theangrybeardfishing712
@theangrybeardfishing712 Жыл бұрын
@@Mountain_Aquatics I've had some success with Iris's, they don't seem to like those, but lilies they eat the leaves before they can hit the surface, I was thinking of maybe running a barrier across maybe 2 foot of the pond and putting the plants behind it, but with the plastic mesh I'd be afraid the goldfish would get all caught up in it, the Grass carp are about 1lb to 2lb now.
@Mountain_Aquatics
@Mountain_Aquatics Жыл бұрын
How big are the goldfish? Could get a very fine mesh perhaps? Or one with very large holes that just stops the bigger fish getting through

I'd be surprised to find that the koi didn't eat those water lilies in the first few days. You can't have aquatic plants with large koi. For amusement, throw a couple full heads of romaine lettuce in the pond and let them float for a few days. You'll be left with the white core bottoms.

Thank you, this has been really fascinating. Interesting thing but, as climates and environments alter and adversely impact modified breeds, there's a possibility that those drab legacy carp may become prohibitely expensive as species exemplars , due to being evolutionary fixed, so to say. Just saying. PS. I sometimes be come so engrossed, that I forget to hit 'like'. Sorry

What protects the fish from Herons etc?
@Mountain_Aquatics
@Mountain_Aquatics 6 ай бұрын
I think the design of this pond does. Herons like to usually land away from a pond and then walk over to creep up on the fish and also make sure that the area is safe. This pond has such a high wall around it that the heron would have to land directly on to the wall. Not impossible but less likely. Then the water line is quite far below the top of the wall, it would be a stretch for the heron to reach. It’s not impossible, but it makes it more difficult for the heron. The pond is also now covered by CCTV so the owners can monitor it at all times. There have been no issues with herons so far, if there ever are then we will look to address it straight away. I hope this answered your question 🙂

We actually got this from another job we completed (see previous videos) we often have customers that need the aquatic plants thinning out and cutting back and we chose to reuse them on other ponds where it is safe to do so. Better then throwing them away! And a good freebie for another pond 👍🏻
