Hay steve for wood elf’s I may have noticed something that may help playing. The amber pendant and the Rhymers harp are close combat magic items one gives the oponet always strikes last one gives a 5 up ward on the unit the character is in maybe with the standard that gives vanguard you can send up a unit to draw attention from the beginning the two I sujest are Eternal guard two hand there spear for some extra damage and a 4 up ward stacked with doge from the harp or spear and sheld for a tiny bit more survive-ability or Wildwood rangers with the amber pendant to make themselves harder to hit from things like monsters if you wanted to use both in the same unit go with the Eternal guard

Huh. I just read this comment, looked at the amber pendant, and... Wood Elves can get -2 to-hit and enemy units in b2b have ASL on a n I8 lord. That's... pretty obnoxious. Enjoy hitting 1/36th of the time.
