These guys are artists. The nuance required in making a good mount is crazy. The attention to detail is cool. Thanks for showing this.

HUSH this year you guys should show us how to cut a perfect Cape in the field, while doing field dressing. Could make an amazing series. I have never done it perfectly. So I always end up doing European Mounts at home.

This was so interesting. Curtis truly is a master of his craft, clearly. I've never thought much about how this is done, but now that I've watched this, it's amazing how much knowledge a person has to have not only in the craft but the animals and their habits/movements, etc. These could all be stupid questions, but oh well... 1) As far as the mounts and ears, etc. go, do you make them yourself or do you buy them pre-formed. As in the ears, for example... did you make them from scratch or is there a taxidermy supplier that makes the ears and forms, etc. that you work from? 2) Is that standard modelling clay that you are using to attach the ears and eyes? 3) How did you learn all the "little" facts that you know such as the pupil placement, eyebrows, etc.? I can't imagine how many different animals you have had to study! 4) In Eric's case you had a photo to show you how it stood/looked at the moment he shot it. I imagine a picture is helpful, but if they don't have one what types of questions do you ask as far as knowing how to place the ears, etc.? That's cool that your son is getting involved in the business.

If you aren't in the area where Curtis' shop is, I bet you could call and ask him if he knows someone in your neck of the woods. Something tells me the good ones know each other!
