In Episode 334 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with famed historian of American Foreign policy Walter Russell Mead. Professor Mead is a Distinguished Fellow in Strategy and Statesmanship at the Hudson Institute, the Global View Columnist at The Wall Street Journal, and the James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and Humanities at Bard College in New York.
How have we found ourselves on the cusp of another war in the Middle East when the Biden administration’s explicit goal coming into office in 2020 was to get the United States out of this region so it could focus on China? This is the question that Mead and Kofinas look to answer in the first hour of their conversation. They also discuss the historical parallels and differences between the present moment and previous periods of immense danger in the international system, the apocalyptic strain in American politics and foreign policy, and how political ideology and the culture war inform people’s opinions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the escalating war in Gaza.
In the second hour, Walter Russell Mead speculates about how international events may evolve, the possibility of outright collusion among America’s adversaries, as well as further avenues of escalation that could lead to direct U.S. involvement in Israel’s war against Hamas. The two also discuss how the war in Ukraine, as well as Chinese military provocations in the Pacific factor into American policy in the Middle East, why U.S. adversaries no longer seem deterred by American power, and what can be done to change that before it’s too late.

My father's reflections on World War II always captivated me. Long before the war commenced, he shared a simple yet profound statement with his Dutch peers: "Nobody builds a war machine of that magnitude in Germany and refrains from using it." This sentiment echoes in the present global scenario. Currently, numerous countries are unprecedentedly bolstering their military forces, reminiscent of his earlier prediction. This resurgence of military buildup foreshadows a worrying era ahead, mirroring my father's forewarning words and suggesting immense challenging times lie on the horizon.

My father said the same thing to me when I was 10 in 1939 I am 94 now and look back and the world is far more dangerous now than it has ever been.I have heard it said quite often, that the First World War was the war to end all wars. There has been so many wars since W.W.2 revolutions coups, uprisings.whatever,it’s hard to count the number Being optimistic about the future is anybody’s guess.

After listening to Prof. Walter Russell Mead explain some of the most difficulty issues facing our world today is simply monumental. I'm privilege to say that through my parents, I was able to travel to NYC in December 22 , 1968. A few days later I was enrolled in the public schools calendar, during my education through the system and many others, I came to appreciate many distinguish teacher for their excellent knowledge and contribution to society. In short, the way I see it is that if the combined West continue it hostility towards Russia and China, it won't be coming as a surprise a fight for total supremacy and a new world order. God have mercy 🙏

MAGNIFICENT! Absolutely BRILLIANT! If anybody out there is interested, THIS IS Lucid Perspicacity! A fellow boomer, a retired academic historian identifies THIS is BIG PICTURE UNDERSTANDING! . . . not only of politics and the world, but life! Mead is one of those rare few who really does see the Whole Chess Board, with the encyclopedic breadth to tune it into crisp focus. My God! This is a joy to see! And the secret discipline, nigh impossible to native human nature, is the ability to Suspend Personal Bias! A kind of scholar's humbleness that bows to the evidence. Utterly INDUCTIVE - silence one's own inner voices and prejudices; observe; and let the phenomena speak! Mead is an intellectual Treasure! And acknowledgment to young Kofinas for both giving the space and eliciting this majestic insight! May his tribe increase! and wisdom illuminate his path.

The Europeans purposefuly and very stupidly split África the same way they split India, they simple drew lines on a map spliting nations in the process, and left them to sort themselves out. In a way one could think it was to perpetuate disunity thus continuing their rule on the colonies from afar. The same happened in the middle east.

The reason you've never seen an alternative map of Africa, one showing the ideal demarcations is simple: there are no ideal demarcations of African territory. Europeans found a tribal land south of the Sahara (and north of it, excepting Egypt). Tribes do not readily transform into nations. A tribal division of Africa would have been extremely decentralized, which is to say, geopolitically extremely weak, subject to endless petty wars and vulnerable to a new age of colonization by, for example, China. Those who complain about this matter are merely ignorant and impotent.

At 50:55 he claims that a hundred people were killed in the Detroit riots, this is from a site called Detroit History: "The Uprising of 1967 is also known as the Detroit Rebellion of 1967 and the 12th Street Riot. It began following a police raid on an unlicensed bar, known locally as a “blind pig.” Over the course of five days, the Detroit police and fire departments, the Michigan State Police, the Michigan National Guard, and the US Army were involved in quelling what became the largest civil disturbance of twentieth century America. The crisis resulted in forty-three deaths, hundreds of injuries, almost seventeen hundred fires, and over seven thousand arrests." I wonder what other "facts" he got wrong. Very interesting discussion… But I disagree on the following: 1) young people today don’t have delusions about the precarious future of the world and their life. Young people, especially in US have a very bleak view of their future. The only thing is they are hanging on to the hope that the US government will do something to change the trajectory. 2) the idea that things were all prosperity and peace after WWII under the US as the world order is missing the fact that the global south/non western nations hardly had peace during this U.S. era. The western world order effectively incited and exploited conflicts and instability around the globe so they can maintain their hegemony and flow of resources. His view of the golden era after WWII is exclusionary of the experiences of the global south. 3) The whole struggle for world order is the revolt of the global majority to break free from the US and western hegemony. Dismissing that element is a disservice to the conversation. 4) on the discussion of US soft power exercise around the world, the idea that US was going around most of the global south and non western nations promoting prosperity and freedom is laughable. The US was ONLY perusing its interest and dominance. Try telling Africans or South Americans that America just wanted them to prosper and be free, you’ll be laughed out. Once China started the belts and roads initiative, US want to convince the world it exploits for free that they care about their development. Let’s not tell ourselves the lies we use as cover for the empire expansion. 5) American economy has become a war economy. The US had engaged in multiple wars on other nations soil invading sovereign nations and orchestrated regime changes. It may not have war at home but it funds multiple wars on both sides of conflicts, mostly that it encourages to start…. Game over.

Great points. But in case you haven't realized, the guest's unspoken position is that the US has a God given right to export its model around the world ("prosperity and 'freedom'") whether other countries want to buy it or not. And that the US has a God given right to remain the top dog in the world, because its model, and the prosperity and 'freedom', are so superior to everything else. There is zero self-reflection on the harm that US millitarism and interventionism has caused around the world, particularly after the end of the Cold War when US held the position of world hegemon. There is zero acknowledgment on the fact that "freedom and prosperity" has really been eroding within the US itself, where supposedly the greatest system resides, resulting in an average life expectancy lower than that of oh-so-evil China in recent years. There's no appreciation or acceptance for different viewpoints other than the American one, held by other countries and peoples around the world, but rather, an implicit view that all different views are "evil" as the Americans are purely good, and that systems different from American one simply have no right to exist as we Americans have the God given right to just go and stamp them all out in favor of our system and our interests because, just because. The entire lecture is basically a warhawk neocon manifesto rooted in US hegemonic imperialist thinking. If the world is becoming a more dangerous place - and it is - people like this lecturer is part of the reason why

I don't think it's prudent to claim that no part of the Euroatlantic dominant class "knew" or "understood" what was going on. It is, e.g. absurd to persist with the notion that the entirety of the US ruling class was "surprised" at the competition for US industrial corporations that "emerged" in the 1970s and 1980s from West Germany/Germany, Japan, and South Korea, our functional post-WWII 'colonies'.

_"Ra: I am Ra. The possibility/probabilities exist for situations in which great portions of your continent and the globe in general might be involved in the type of warfare which you might liken to guerrilla warfare. The ideal of freedom from the so-called invading force of either the controlled fascism or the equally controlled social common ownership of all things would stimulate great quantities of contemplation upon the great polarization implicit in the contrast between freedom and control._ _In this scenario which is being considered at this time/space nexus the idea of obliterating valuable sites and personnel would not be considered an useful one. Other weapons would be used which do not destroy as your nuclear arms would._ _In this ongoing struggle the light of freedom would burn within the mind/body/spirit complexes capable of such polarization. Lacking the opportunity for overt expression of the love of freedom, the seeking for inner knowledge would take root aided by those of the Brothers and Sisters of Sorrow which remember their calling upon this sphere._ Questioner: Are you saying then that this possible condition of war would be much more greatly spread across the surface of the globe than anything we have experienced in the past and therefore touch a larger percentage of the population in this form of catalyst? _Ra: I am Ra. This is correct. There are those now experimenting with one of the major weapons of this scenario, that is the so-called psychotronic group of devices which are being experimentally used to cause such alterations in wind and weather as will result in eventual famine. If this program is not countered and proves experimentally satisfactory, the methods in this scenario would be made public._ _There would then be what those whom you call Russians hope to be a bloodless invasion of their personnel in this and every land deemed valuable. However, the peoples of your culture have little propensity for bloodless surrender."_ Ra Material (1981)

With all intellectuals, intelligence, knowledge and power, how is it so easy to forget that we were about to have the greatest leadership in the world not mentioning JFK. Not following up with his Speech, his thoughts and his plane for peace around the world which could lead us all for a better world for us all and our children. Can anyone go back and listen to JFK's speech. This is so unfortunately unforgivable to forget. Since then there isn't any like, talk and not act like him. Getting old and can't forget JFK and I keep on listening to JFK's speeches. May God bless us all and our children. Hope to see the made in the USA and our well connected to the world.

Great interview. I would argue the context depends upon perspective-ij the west we may see things unfolding as political but in the middle east, it is a wholly religious goal. Indeed, I am well-pleased to report christian revival is breaking out all over the place so i beleive at some point it will be a coalition of islam and secular communist/socialists vs christians and jews broadly speaking. Interestingly, our bible told us about this confluence 2000 years ago!!

I think he made some good points but he kinda lost me at the Israeli comment. If they hate Israel and Jews they hate America isn’t a good point. Arabs don’t like Israel not because of America, but because americas relentless support of it. Why isn’t Israel getting any sanctions from the settlers that every country outside of the USA has condemned but USA hasn’t ever. I did find it interesting how it’s the Middle Eastern Jews who got expelled who are more vocal and nationalistic towards Israel, it makes sense and I think that it was a mistake for them to be expelled. The creation of Israel happened at a moment after the fall of the Ottoman Empire where many Arab countries were overthrowing their oppressive kings in favor for more moderate and even secular leaders. Pan-Arabism was sweeping all the Arab countries in a sense of unity which was led by the secular and more popular leaders. With the creation of Israel that all came to a halt as all the focus was this new nation that’s heavily favored by the outside world. The “nakba” happened and the Arabs realized that pan Arabism couldn’t work anymore. Eventually we see the secular leaders becoming more authoritarian like their royal counterparts

"The “nakba” happened and the Arabs realized that pan Arabism couldn’t work anymore." Your history is very confused. Pan-Arabism was strong at least until 1973, when it was once again humiliated on the battlefield in and around Palestine. The Arabs had proved 4 times that they could not defeat the Israelis even when multiple Arab countries attacked Israel all at once. Why would anyone believe in pan-Arabism after that? Just as the Muslims gained Palestine by force (more than once), they have lost it by force.

I do not find in the Bible where it is stated with clarity that there will be a second return of the jews to their 'homeland' in palestine although it is actively preached by protestant preachers. To many people the establishment of the state of Israel is a self fulfilling prophesy not shared by many nations. It is stated in the bible that God's blessings are not accompanied by sadness. If the establishment of Israel were the will of God how could we explain that since the proclamation of Balfour in 1948 there has never been real peace in Israel. Is it a blessing or a curse? Moreover one may ask why should God waited until 6 millions jews had been massacred before deciding to allow Israel to be born again? Having said this one may wonder whether God had really intervened in this worldly matter or whether it is merely a purely a human fabrication that has been repeatedly preached through generations as to become something automatically acceptable by protestants?

The fact that true left and centre left connects Israel to America might just be more a consequence of the facts that: 1. America has been financing Israel since for ever 2. That both countries are a constant source of wars 3. That both countries keep talking about two state solution since 70s but in fact do everything in their power to ensure state of Palestine does not happen 4. That neither US nor Israel are actually democracies. US is a plutocracy, to a large extent influenced by Israel lobby, and Israel is an apartheid state. In fact there is very little to like in both. And by the way, the theory that Jew immigrants from Arabic countries were expelled by those countries is actually not quite true either. As explained in fair amount of detail by several Jewishhistorians. Many Jews of Palestinian origin are very liberal - Amira Hass . Plenty others too.

1. America finances many countries, including Egypt. 2. Mostly true for America, not for Israel. 3. Nonsense. 4. True again on America. I will concede to defining Israel as an apartheid state only if you concede that apartheid states are common in the world, to include Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, China, and many others. Racial and religious hierarchies are common and mostly necessary in such states. More nations ought to employ them.

Evolution or extinction? Are we able to learn to live in harmony with each other, nature and technology including AI? Sustainability not profitability. Mindfulness and self love, respect not exploitation. Our species faces a major die off, the population is passing the peak, passing a tipping point where our population goes from exponential growth to a transition to a new sustainable relationship with the ecosystem that has sustained us up until now. That downward curve can be as steep as a cliff which falls to zero, extinction, or it can begin steeply and recover as it returns to historic levels of sustainability, pre-technology levels such as pre-Columbian America. This could lead to a selection pressure that would produce a new species of hominid, speciation. The curve could be more gentle and could include technological solutions that would level off at a population that could both live more harmoniously with nature and each other and incorporate technology that would represent an evolution into a new species of technologically enhanced humanity, cyborgs. Taking life to other planets, terraforming and evolving new species of humans who could survive other planetary ecologies is another path that will require technologies including genetic engineering to reach for the stars. Managing these changes in a moral and humane way brings hope to a future that appears very scary from our selfish and ethnocentric perspectives. Keep up the good work or as John Perkins says "Dream True" instead of living like the hero of his book "Confessions of an Economic Hitman." Be blessed, you are a blessing. Aboriginal cultures have much to teach us.

"Our social market model was so good, everyone would want in on it" Well, everyone is in on it to some degree. Ever since Deng even the Chinese had some degree of free markets. HOWEVER, the largest shocks of recent years have come primarily from our ignoring the markets, and allowing Authoritarian Bureaucrats -- first in 2008 in Fannie Mae, and later in 2020-2022 in CDC / NIH -- to impose public policies. Fannie Mae's public policies subverted the housing market -- we really should have known better, as this was a Cold War 1 (Industrial Revolution) problem. CDC / NIH was actually something new, though. It involved an Information Revolution distributed solution, and opposition from the "Mandarinate" -- authoritarian bureaucrats in governments worldwide. Doctors armed with Internet-enabled information were able to determine the true scope and danger of the [mysterious virus of unknown origins] VERY quickly, as Authoritarian Bureaucrats blundered us into utterly disastrous economic policies. Elections of these days have been a renegotiation of the power of the Mandarinate -- an effort to bring it down in America at least. It wouldn't surprise me if the new evangelical American creed that we can all get behind, is one that pushes the Mandarinates out of power, first in America, and then worldwide. Americans won't fight to make the world safe for bureaucracy. To be free of bureaucrats, and to set the rest of the world free, so that we can maintain Free Speech, Free Markets, and Free Elections, is something we may we be willing to fight for, though. =) We just need to have them and keep them in America first.

@@kreek22 Well, if we're following the Chinese model it might be bloody. But we're doing the American model, so I don't think that the bureaucrats will have as much respect and deference amongst a majority of the population -- especially after what we saw with Covid. Part of what we saw was HOPE, though. Independent media voices (the Great Barrington Declaration, etc) show just how FAST accurate information can be produced and disseminated through the new revolutionary channels technology has given us. The information that's consistent with people's personal experiences is going to resonate and be amplified, and the information that is contradicted by reality is going to get dampened. America will lead the way. We've always been the types of people to say, "OK, let's figure it out for ourselves", and that has led us to great success. Thanks for picking up on this... It's probably the most important trend of the early 21st century. Spread the word.
