Mouse And Keyboard On An Original N64??? - I Did It... And You Can Too!

I made an original N64 work with a mouse and keyboard because I'm too rubbish to use an analogue stick. It's been quite a journey, arduous at times, but it actually turned out to be a lot more practicable than I expected. All the important links to emulate this project can be found below. Good luck!

It should be flexible enough to work with any game, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, any of the FPS games, although some games might not be conducive to mouse and keyboard controls.

Anyone who has ever complained about the N64 controller has never spent hours holding an original Megadrive controller or played a 3D game with one. An analogue stick for Flickies Island would have been luxury in my day, playing it when I got home from school, which walking to was uphill both ways. YOU DON'T KNOW YOU'RE BORN, LAD.

Excellent project that I'm trying to replicate and I have a question. I see the data line from the N64 goes to pin 12 of the Teensy 4.0. Where should I attach the remaining 2 being pwr and gnd. I imagine possibly not needing the pwr but I imagine I definitely would need the gnd. And thanks for all of your effort. I had been using an Xbox controller through a Blueretro via Bliuetooth but being able to use a trackball or mouse seems far superior. What an accomplishment on your part..

I improved the design here because of this very issue. The power and ground need to be connected to something or the console assumes the controller is broken and throws an error. You can't just short the wires together - this alarms the console and puts it in safe mode. My first design had the ground connected to one of the ground pins on the Teensy and I connected the live to one of the Teensy's 3v output pins. Power was running the wrong way, but the console didn't mind, I assume because it has diodes in there to protect it, but it fooled the console enough for it to work. I'd have thought you can just put a really big resistor between power and ground and that would do the trick, but try that out at your own risk. In the end I did a slight redesign so that the Teensy was getting power from the console itself through the controller wire. You can cut a trace on the Teensy so it won't get power from the USB port and supply power through the 5vin pin - on the opposite corner to pin 12. I used a small voltage regulator (U1V10F5) to up the voltage from the 3v that the console provides to the 5v the Teensy needs to start up (fun fact: the code can run on 3v, but the chip won't initialise unless it gets 5v to begin with). I even got some PCBs printed to mount everything nicely and 3D printed a cylindrical enclosure for a really nice finish. A small update video might be useful at some point.

This is only a solution for original hardware I'm afraid. I've not messed about with emulators.
