On the advice of my holistic dentist, I've been taping my mouth shut every night for years using Nexcare paper tape, horizontally. He also demonstrated how to remove the tape by pushing it away with my tongue to avoid tearing the skin on my lips. I've never had a problem. I find the practice so beneficial that I will not likely ever give it up. Almost magic.

I've been a long time mouth breather and someone with a constantly stuffy nose, hay fever, dust allergy etc. Last 12-24 months or so I've put a focus on tidying things up with putting my tongue at the roof of the mouth and nose breathing. Tried lots of different exercises but I think the thing is to just break the habit, which takes persistence and time. I haven woke up with a dry mouth for quite a while now and I didn't use tape or anything, again, just a focus on healthy breathing habits. My sinuses are much , much less stuffy now too.

Love that you've posted a video on this, Lucas! I've been taping my mouth shut for about a year and a half after reading Breath by James Nestor. It's been a game changer. I *also* have a beard, and find that a simple square about the size of a postage stamp of medical tape does the trick. I almost always wake up in the morning with my tape still on! No need for the overpriced "hostage tape" or any of those things. I've been working with a roll of $3 tape since day one! 😮 Love your explanation of it! Thanks for everything!

So interesting, thank you. I used Breathe Rite strips daily for over a year and they helped me tremendously. Unfortunately, even though I was using the type for sensitive skin, I eventually developed a sensitivity to the adhesive and now I only dare using them once or twice a week. That led me to mouth taping, which I have now been doing nightly for over a year. I use 3M bandage tape but discovered that it leaves behind a thin layer of adhesive, so next I had to find a product that removes this. Who knew breathing could be such a challenge! I might give chin straps a try and see if they work for me. And I'll try the technique you taught us!

I've had chronic sinusitis and sinus infections for nearly 2 decades. After working with a naturopathic doctor it seems that is under control...no episodes for almost 3 months. I've been using medical paper tape and taping every night for several months-almost a year. I sleep better, less dry mouth, less groggy. My husband went off all sugar, no fruit , no flour, and no caffeine and it stopped his nightly chronic snoring within 2 days! He is eating a mostly raw and completely vegan diet. He's dropped 30+ lbs in 3 months. He's 6' 2" and started at 220 lbs. Thanks so much for all of your videos and information!

Pranayama is an ancient breath technique that originates from yogic practices in India. It involves controlling your breath in different styles and lengths. It has more recently gained popularity in the western world because of the many health benefits that come from a pranayama practice. Pranayama is typically practiced alongside yoga. It is known as the fourth anga, or limb, of yoga. Pranayama is regarded as a science. It’s believed that you can control the power of your mind through regulating your breath. The word pranayama comes from two separate words: prana and ayama. Prana translates to breath, while ayama has many different meanings including expansion, length, and rising.

I have bee taping horizontally with Nexcare tape for 8 years. I had Patrick M’s books and learned a lot. Also the book by Nestor - Breathe. Great info and something no ENT or sleep specialist wants to hear. Been through it with them. Taping and nose breathing works! Better sleep, less to NO apnea. In fact, although I can’t prove it, I’d say I don’t have obstructive sleep apnea. Still snore through my nasal passages though.

I have been taping my mouth for about 5 years now and while it used to come off now it rarely does. I am a big fan and feel more refreshed when I use it. I also like to make sure my room is nice and cool and I sleep with a mask over my eyes, earplugs and a weighted blanket. The mouth tape was the first of these hacks and then I just kept adding. Magnesium or an Epsom salt bath are also lovely before bed.

I taped for a couple of nights and found it really easy to sleep through the night with the tape. Sleep was deeper, although I still woke up. I stopped as the I found I was getting small mouth ulcers on the inside of the lips (who knows why) and the tape was marking my skin. Will definitely try this option and possibly some different tapes.

I used a bandaid vertically on fairly tight and it extended under my chin. I slept very well. There was enough room on either side of the bandaid that I could gently cough or even lightly yawn or drink water thru a straw. It stayed on all night. I was more comfortable with it than I would have been all night without it.

I've been trying to persuade my wife to let me tape our daughter's mouth shut for months now, and she won't let me! I did explain that it was for breathing and not just to keep her quiet. She has terrible issues with snoring and no specialist (UK) will recommend taping, to back up what I've been saying. I suggested that we did for an hour (or half) while she watched TV or whatever to get her used to it, but I'm fighting a losing battle I think. It's frustrating, because I believe that the mouth breathing leads to more mouth breathing, whereas doctors suggest that it's something she'll grow out of. I think that if we train her to breath through her nose then that will help her as she grows, especially at a time when she's losing her baby teeth (I believe there is some research to suggest that her face will effectively widen with nasal breathing and create the space needed for those adult teeth to grow through). To me, childhood is the perfect time to do this. I'll be showing my wife this video! Thanks Lucas, incredibly useful.

If I do not tape my whole mouth I end up forcing my mouth open and pulling the tape away. I’ve tried chinstraps, cervical collars and appliances to no avail. Sighs are normal, don't worry about it Forgetting to breathe is often a self-soothing technique, also nothing to worry about. We're all obsessed with "oxygen". If you put a blood oxygen on you'll see you're almost certainly "full tank" all the time (with O2).

The video "Mouth Taping at Night? Stop Snoring, Sleep Apnea & Sleep Better" on KZbin is presented by Lucas, a yoga teacher and breathing coach. The video discusses the concept of mouth taping at night as a method to improve sleep quality and address issues like snoring and sleep apnea. The technique is rooted in the Buteyko method, developed by Dr. Konstantin Buteyko in the 1950s, which emphasizes slow, gentle breathing through the nose to normalize breathing rate and increase CO2 levels. ### Key Points: 1. **Importance of Nose Breathing**: Breathing through the nose has several benefits, including filtering out particulate matter, bacteria, and viruses. It also releases nitric oxide, which is beneficial for cardiovascular health. 2. **Drawbacks of Mouth Breathing**: Breathing through the mouth can lead to dental issues, increased heart rate, and poor sleep quality. 3. **How to Tape Your Mouth**: Lucas suggests using bandage tape from a pharmacy and placing it in the middle of the mouth. However, this method may not work well for people with facial hair. 4. **Alternatives to Mouth Taping**: - **Chin Strap**: A strap that goes around the head to keep the mouth closed. - **Breathe Right Strips**: These strips can be placed on the nose to help keep the nasal passages open. 5. **Preparation Before Taping**: It's essential to clean the sinuses before attempting any of these methods. This can be done through a nasal flush or by using a neti pot. 6. **Control Pause Technique**: This Buteyko technique involves holding your breath at the end of an exhale to act as a natural bronchodilator, opening up the breathing passageways. 7. **Disclaimer**: The video emphasizes that these methods are not a substitute for medical advice, especially for those with severe respiratory issues. Lucas also recommends checking out resources by Patrick McKeown for those interested in learning more about the Buteyko method. ### Note: The video is intended for educational purposes and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. If you have severe asthma, sleep apnea, or any other major respiratory issues, it's crucial to consult a healthcare provider.

I was walking into the pharmacy, the lady there said they do not sell those tapes but she has the same problem, she would recommend a medical tape, I bought it, and it worked like a charm. Never I felt so rested, so relaxed, so energized after waking up, knowing i have not harassed people next to me because of the snoring, it is perfect, I am also naturally getting my tongue into the suction hold. (Tongue on palate) My personal theory is that the weaker your tongue is, the more likely it will fall back and cause that sleep apnea. A poor neck posture ads to the problem. Sleep apena can end lethal. So please start to do tongue exercises, read about mewing, and more importantly improve your posture, your face and health will think you for it.
