If you want to increase your oxygen absorption and improve your respiratory health, breathing exercises can be very effective. Contrary to popular belief, simply breathing faster is not the solution. In this video, we’ll explore how oxygen and carbon dioxide work together, and some exercises you can do to improve your breathing biomechanics.
Your O2 Levels Are Likely “Full”
Contrary to popular belief, most people have optimal blood oxygen levels between 95-99 percent all throughout the day. Think of your blood oxygen stores as your tank of gas, when the tank is full, it’s full. There’s no added benefit to keeping the pump running and letting the gas spill out on the floor. Surprisingly, most people over-breathe, meaning their minute-by-minute respiration rate is 10, 20 or even 30 percent higher than it needs to be. Accelerated breathing can be fueled by stress, anxiety, and poor health.
Your CO2 Levels Are Likely Lacking
Constant over breathing unnaturally reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the lungs and has a cascading impact on your gas exchange balance. To understand the paradoxical relationship between oxygen and carbon dioxide, it’s helpful to learn the Bohr Effect. This phenomenon, discovered by Danish researcher Christian Bohr, explains how oxygen binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. Carbon dioxide plays a crucial role in releasing oxygen from hemoglobin and making it available for cellular use. Hyperventilation, or fast breathing, leads to excessive oxygen intake without an adequate level of carbon dioxide. This is why fast breathing can cause dizziness, headache, or even fainting.
The Goal is Balance
As is true with everything in health, the objective with breathing is to find balance. This
means slowing the breath and training them muscles of respiration. When it comes to breathing, balances refer to the rate of breathing and the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide respectively.
Resistance Breath
The diaphragm is your main breathing muscle and can be strengthened through resistance training just like any other muscle. To create resistance, it’s helpful to inhale through a resistance device or even an aluminium straw.
To add to the benefits of this exercise, we’ll deliberately slow and deepen the breath to optimize CO2 levels. Inhale through a resistance device as you count 1-2-3-4; and exhale through your nose for 4-3-2-1.
Broom Pole Extension (2 min)
The broom pole extension exercise involves holding a broom pole behind your back with your arms positioned at a comfortable width. This exercise helps increase flexibility in the thoracic region, allowing for improved breathing mechanics.
Breathing exercises can be a powerful tool in optimizing your oxygen utilization and enhancing overall breathing biomechanics. It is important to remember that hyperventilation does not increase oxygen levels in your cells. However, there are specific use cases where controlled hyperventilation may be beneficial, such as stimulating cortisol in the morning or preparing the body for physical activity. By incorporating these breathing exercises into your routine, you can experience the benefits of improved breathing and enhanced oxygen absorption. Let's get started!

well then how is the hyperbaric oxygen therapy working to lengthen telomeres, if we don't need any more oxygenation of cells than we already have. ???
@YOGABODY.Official
@YOGABODY.Official 10 ай бұрын
@@fascistphilosophy5649 there is oxygen in lungs, oxygen in blood, and then oxygen in cells. You can have fully saturated O2 in blood and not be able to use it. Breath really quickly for a few minutes, you'll feel it right away. Hyperbaric oxygen does not lengthen telomeres.

@@YOGABODY.Official are you sure hyperbaric chambers don't lengthen telomeres? lot of reputable sources suggest it's true. also marathoners are said to have great telomeres. surely there is a common factor there. ??? I'm thinking wim hoff method = longer telomeres. ... you sure???
@YOGABODY.Official
@YOGABODY.Official 10 ай бұрын
@@fascistphilosophy5649 Lots of the hyperbaric research is dubious, conflicts of interest. It's certainly possible. Re: marathon runners / ultra runners. THis is for sure not a longevity strategy. Telomere research is interesting but not just one of many signs of aging. It's hard to parse out the "health person" bias as people who exercise/meditate/etc are more likely to have lots of other healthy behaviors. While their telomere length might be longer in some studies, unlikely they lengthened but instead degenerated slower... that is to say signs of true age reversal are not there, but slowing aging for sure. Re: controlled hyperventilation and telomere lengthening. I can't think of a mechanism of action there, why they would be. I would not make that assumption, but I could be missing it.

For a decade, i've been struggling with mental health issues and the breathing exercises I use helps tremendously in many aspects of my life. 🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🌬️ Breathing deeply and rapidly doesn't necessarily increase oxygen effectively; it can lead to dizziness and headaches due to CO2 imbalance. 01:27 💡 Focusing solely on oxygen levels can overlook the importance of CO2 balance, necessary for oxygen absorption at the cellular level. 03:16 📊 Most people have oxygen saturation levels of 95-99%, and over-breathing can disrupt CO2 balance, limiting oxygen delivery to cells. 04:40 ⚖️ Optimal breathing involves a balance between oxygen and CO2; slower, normalized breathing patterns can improve respiratory efficiency. 06:25 🏋️ Strengthening the diaphragm muscle through resistance can improve respiratory coordination and efficiency. 10:31 🧘 Stretching exercises for the thoracic region can enhance posture and intercostal muscle flexibility, leading to better breathing efficiency.

When you hyperventilate you blow off CO2 leading to something called respiratory alkalosis... it raises your bodies Ph which is something rigidly controlled by your body. Your body needs to slow your ventilation to normalize your CO2 and pH. So if you hyperventilate excessively you will pass out. Consequently, your respiratory rate and minute ventilation will slow down, CO2 will normalize along with your pH.

Surprise that a yoga instructor is advising mouth-breathing versus nose breathing😳😳. Oh well, if it works that’s great. Nasal breathing naturally filters (ie resistance) oxygen going into the lungs. This filters out many toxins. Mouth breathing… no resistance and opens the floodgates to all the impurities in the air. Good luck all👍

This was so very interesting. I did similar breathing exercises to see if it improve my overall V02 max score. I had read prior to my experiment that you could only improve your V02 max score by doing H.I.I.T training of 4 minutes maximum heart rate with 4 minutes recovery 1-3 times a week. At the time in addition to the breathing exercises I was only doing resistance training 2-3 times a week and Low Intensity steady state cardio 2-3 times a week, no H.I.I.T cardio whatsoever. Much to my surprise a month of consistent daily breathing exercises whenever I could fit them in, shot my maximum v02 max score 8-10 points and the greatest increase I had ever seen. When I experimented with H.I.I.T months ago consistently it didn’t move my V02 max score up at all and actually decreased it to my shock. When I stopped the breathing exercises, my V02 Max Score nose dived back down

In addition to stretching the front, also need to do corrective exercises to strengthen the middle of the back that pulls the shoulders back, else the stretching won’t help as much. The muscles never get worked and always get stretched when on electronic devices all day. Resistance band pull aparts with the thumbs pointing out, elbows in shoulders in external rotation is one. Facepulls with resistance band around a pole face level, again pull with thumbs back and hand go back with elbows getting those muscles. Not looking for “gains” or PRs, just consistent corrective exercises. You will feel how weak it is.

Thanks for this Lucas I've been suffering with Long Covid symptoms for 3 years now and I'm always looking for anything that can help ease my pain. I would love to know what you'd suggest for a full day schedule of breathing and exercises. Trying to sleep is a Nightmare, It would be great to hear your ideas for a before bed routine and even optimal sleeping positions. If you ever do classes in Los Angeles, I would like to attend one.

Sorry to hear, we've been covering / researching long COVID On teh podcast recently. re: full day. Less is more, consistency is key. Our protocol is morning / afternoon / evening practices with about 15 min total (but really more like 10 min total once you're proficient).

Lucas this is for you What I mean by less is more? You mean your triangles method of 4x4x4 should not be part of one’s routine breathing habits only for three times a day for total of 10 or 15 minutes ? Pls elaborate

Hello quick question. I actually have PTSD and panic and anxiety disorder, so would this be right for me? What I do with breathing is I count to four I don’t hold because it causes fight or flight they say, and I breathe out for more than four seconds. But I do want to increase oxygen, so what do I do 😢thanks

Great video. I carry a lot of tension from anxiety. These exercises help me relax better. I was wondering about the resistance breathing, if you do it the opposite. Meaning, if I breath in for 4 through the nose and have resistance on the outbreath instead, does it do the same for the diaphragm or do you workout something else here? Thanks :)
@YOGABODY.Official
@YOGABODY.Official 8 ай бұрын
Resistance breathing can be a great way to strengthen your respiratory muscles and improve lung capacity. While the traditional method involves resistance on the inhale, you can also experiment with resistance on the exhale. This can still engage the diaphragm and provide a workout for your breathing muscles. Give it a try and see how it feels for you! If you'd like more information on breathing exercises, check out this article: Breathing Exercises for Pain Relief. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I know this may sounds crazy but when I get panic attacks and feel my hands starting to numb I hold my breathe for up to a minute and I can feel my blood pressure increasing and anxiety going away. I do believe I’m increasing my carbon dioxide by breathe holds.

I've done the breathing before, down to less than 3 respirations per minute, using full inhale/exhale with holding at the top and the bottom. But I'm not sure if it's good for my system. I enjoy it and feel fine. But, I have advanced Cystic Fibrosis with only 22% of expected FEV1 for my age. [Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second] And, I've been told I have elevated blood gas - CO². Can you say for sure this practice will raise my CO² level ? I'm hoping it actually moderates it.
