thanks you I thought I was crazy for thinking that, nobody in this fandom seems to believe that the whole point of the gun was to be used to kill threats in the ship (otherwise it wouldn’t be here, the company wouldn’t gave it). Everyone seems to ignore the gun just to fit to the narrative that Curly had no other choice, that he was just too much of an empath... bullshit lol in fact he had multiples solutions involving this gun, without the need to kill Jimmy. Like shoot his leg. The dude can’t walk but he can still pilot lol. Or force him to go into a cryo-pod with it. Or just lock Jimmy in the nurse room (after taking everything in the room). And I bet if u think really seriously about it, you can come up with a perfect solution. There was so much ways to deal with Jimmy, it’s really frustrating to see the fandom defend so much Curly when the whole point of his character is that he indeed had a lot of occasions to step in, he just chosed not to. Because he didn’t cared enough about Anya and the safety of everyone, he cared more about their friendship and their reputation at some point. It’s crazy to think « Curly didn’t really had a choice » when a gun (which only Curly has access to) exists in the story. He wasn’t even obligated to hurt Jimmy with it. Why would anyone with a gun leaves a rapist on the ship without trying anything against him ?

They’ll rebuttal me with “that’s cruel and curly wouldn’t do that” bruh it’s really not that cruel to put a criminal in confinement since the pods will perfectly preserve him till they get to earth. He literally committed r and because they are in space with little supplies that puts Anya’s life in so much danger and the crew in general. Abortion or birth either one will harm Anya and there’s no telling how to deal with that in space. Keeping the baby also means food supply is going down even more cause it’s enough for 4 people not 5 and 1/2. Curly HAD options and chose to do nothing, even in his hypothetical he would let jimmy get away with it and not report this!! Curly is seen as bad because he enables Jdiddys actions. And I’m sick of people not acknowledging this. They need to get over the fact he failed to protect Anya, and failed to punish jdiddy when his job as captain is to be responsible for the crews slight mess ups(major in this case). I didn't know people don't think Anya's SA was real...i remember people saying that Anya and Jimmy had a one night stand and that's still disgusting, but my god. We don't need an explicit scene. Subtext is good enough, because why would the creator put in more context for something that should not be. I would rather not have a full on SA scene, no matter if it's vague or not. This game is metaphors on top of subtext. Anya's SA was handled so good that if that SA scene were too happen in full, i would not talk about this game so much. Once you show off a mystery instead of looking into it, then it looses all meaning and impact.

It is also important the recognize that the reaction to the game is very real in the fact that most people who are victims have people not believe them and that is kinda a big part of what this game is trying to portray, the way curly puts Jimmy's feelings above anyas experience and keeps Jimmy on the pony because he has his own personal guilty for getting Jimmy the job, and the games narrative through Jimmy is designed to minimize anyas experience as he is the perpetrator so people's mixed opinions on anyas assault is almost a part of the point the game is trying to make and bring attention to within assault victim experiences (just food for thought idk if that all made sense In the way I explained it but I think that people's reactions do almost give the game more impact in what it's trying to say as some fans are literally proving the point of the game)

Jimmy just found another victim in Anya, so Anya and Curly are sadly both victims in their circumstances and all of it can just be undermined by different people or just looked over to point the finger and demonize the wrong person. I agree, but If most of the people who played the game or watched it aren't sure if it was consensual or not, maybe the creator needed to give some more insight. No one needs anything explicit, but maybe more hints. The thing with the gun (and EVERY WEAPON) is that they're all supposed to be locked. The gun is specifically assigned to the captain IN CASE OF A MUTINY. It's not encouraging violence, it's worse: the captain is expected to BE a petty tyrant and the only one who can kill if his crew MUTINIES; in that case the "safety" of only TWO rooms in the entire ship locking also make sense: literally, no one can hide away from the captain or defend themselves from the captain. The captain even gets the two safest places in the ship to hide into: the medbay, where he can patch himself up, and the cockpit, where there's all the supplies needed to suppress a mutiny at GUNPOINT (the nylon cord would be used to tie someone up, or multiple someones up-- either the one mutinying or a HOSTAGE to deter the rest of the crew if they all want to mutiny and bumrush him. Curly is shown (through the inventory text description on the knife) to actually be lenient as a captain, because the knife should ALSO be locked down or only in his possession, same with the axe not being supposed to be left to Swansea. Also important are the Polle posters' HR notes (I don't know if Jimmy reads the fine print but Curly does when he interacts with them. The "Lend a hand!" one explains that ANY HR COMPLAINT made might result in EVERYONE BEING PUNISHED, further enforcing the crew as a captive audience to the captain (and that further builds to Jimmy's beliefs that Curly thinks himself above the others and how Jimmy acts when he's captain, like somehow he's in control of everything everyone does and he should be treated like a king). I'd eat my socks if Curly's post-employment job references and commemoration he was going to get per dev Q&A aren't because he's the ONLY Pony Express captain that didn't have a mutiny on his employment record. Also to draw you a free contrast between Curly and Jimmy: if like you said Curly is representing "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" (or another sentence that also fits him: "For evil to triumph requires only that good men do nothing."), then Jimmy's sentence would be, "He's only sorry he gets caught."

I saw a couple of the “Anya’s assault never happened” and “Anya had consensual relations with Jimmy and regretted it” takes and BOY that’s a doozey to unpack. As a victim of sexual assault I felt like Anya’s story was very well handled. It’s SO apparent the assault happened. I’d almost argue it was never really shown because Jimmy himself, thinking it’s really not a big deal, doesn’t even fully remember the situation, deeming it unimportant. He truly doesn’t think he did wrong. He thought what happened was a normal, every day, consensual experience. He only got worried when he started to think about how it would look to others if it came out she was pregnant. From my own life experience, and I could be wrong lol, but Jimmy acts a lot like the type of guy who takes advantage of any and every girl he can. The only shame he feels is the thought that one of his buddies would pick on him for sleeping with a “weird” or “unattractive” woman. From my view when playing the game it seemed a lot like Jimmy wasn’t apologetic about what he did to Anya, he was just worried about how it would look to Curly and upper management, and to a degree Daisuke and Swansea. He was hoping, almost expecting, Curly to take his side and have the whole thing swept under the rug and only started to really spiral when it seemed like he was caught and done for. So he used his friendship with Curly against Curly himself, took advantage and played devils advocate (more like devils personal assistant and protege) and tried to kill not only himself, but everyone else on the crew. The way he talked to Curly before the crash, and to Daisuke when he went through the tunnel, makes it pretty clear IMO that Jimmy is a jealous, manipulative liar who will say and do anything to keep his reputation clean. He was envious of the authority Curly had. He almost killed everyone and then lied about it so he could take authority for himself. He wanted to be the strong one, the one in charge, the captain. So TLDR; even the idea that Anya lied or had any form of consensual relationship with Jimmy is ludicrous. We have a mountain of evidence showing that the only person on the ship who’s a liar is Jimmy. It seems like a fair bit of people haven’t realized that you play most of the game as the “villain” of the story.

I absolutely love how Mouthwashing approaches ingame things- Like there is a plot relevant reason why Jimmy knows how to spike someone's drink without causing physical damage. Most games, they don't explain how- say- your character in a survival game somehow knows how to make a knife from scratch....or how they are able to climb that high... People don't even take issue with it because "It's a game". This sets the bar so low that our standards don't demand better or even think about wanting better... Mouthwashing doesn't take that as a viable excuse. Even more so, they make this aspect an important part of the narrative instead of being meta-narrative negligence.

I interpreted the Polle on the mound of mouthwash scene as Polle being kind of a mix of a representation of both Anya and the baby (I would even argue it's just the baby, seeing as Jimmy feels so little for Anya that really the only representation we get of her in his hallucinations is a deformed and monstrous looking womb). I can't remember what Polle specifically says but it's along the lines of "What should I call you? Old Man? Seems a bit above your pay grade." This makes me think that Polle is saying "should i call you dad? even tho you don't deserve it" because of the assault. Even in his hallucinations, Anya doesn't even get to have her voice heard. Jimmy is truly sick. Edit: I also think that this Polle is a representation of Anya and the baby is because Jimmy tells Polle that he's going to take responsibility and he talks about Curly and how he'll take care of him and how good of a person Curly is. He says like "I fucked up but i can still make it right" but he's only talking about the crash. And Jimmy goes on to quote Anya about our worst moments but Polle interupts him saying "If all of that is true, Why are you still so concerned with him?" The him is italicized and talking about Curly. This is because jimmy is only taking responsibility for Curly not for what he did against Anya. Polle is asking him that if he is truly willing to take responsibility, why hasn't he addressed what he did to Anya.

One of the theories I like about Swansea is that he doesn’t attack jimmy, and he doesn’t attack jimmy because he outright states he no longer cares after Daisuke’s death. Honestly by that point I personally believe he probably wants jimmy to kill him, or at least something to kill him, because he’s obviously lost all hope. But Jimmy watched him kill Daisuke, so in Jimmy’s mind, Swansea is a killer, and so his killing Swansea is now justified, and he doesn’t have to feel guilt for it. The conversation that takes place after the graveyard chase is most likely what actually happened-Jimmy approached Swansea with the gun while Swansea was drinking at the table, and Swansea decides to give him a speech before he goes. I highly doubt Swansea would have the motivation to fight back by that point in the game, which is probably why I like the theory so much. I love that the game doesn’t outright tell you what happened, though, because it’s just such good storytelling

34:55 One thing I heard when I first heard about this game is that the mouthwash can represent Curly in a way. He can't see the dead pixel. He misses the 0.01% of scum on his ship. He is "too sweet" to fix the problem once he learns of it. He's a good person, but he doesn't take care of the problem because he can't see how someone he cares about could do something like what Jimmy did. Some people say that Curly is partially at fault here, and I agree with them. While I want to believe that Curly is a good person, and I do think he is, he is an enabler. He doesn't stop it. Anya is a character I resonate so much with, there's this animation I wonder if you've seen or not called "fireworks - mouthwashing animatic" by "zzzaturation" and it beautifully depicts how an S/A survivor, still around their abuser goes about life in a very "careful" and closed off way (I say this being both a repeated CSA survivor and an adult S/A and domestic abuse survivor. Man I was with would have his way 1-4 times A DAY with me, and this lasted about 2 years straight while we were also coworkers, so Anya really does hit home for me in a deep way, I also commented my thoughts on that video, but I think it was one of the only animations to ever genuinely make me cry actual real tears because I've never seen my experience so properly visualized before) As strong as I know Anya is, and as much as a slap in the face of a comment that would be to Jimmy if it were said sarcastically, I think of her deeply in the way I had to navigate around that breed of man irl, she doesn't want to cause issues with him, so she's both definitely NOT being sarcastic- because if he catches on she's giving him any sass, then that WILL cause issues, and she's overcompensating by praising him, in a way that is.. not genuine, but is trying to come off genuine to Jimmy. I remember having to act this way a lot back then, and it is really hard to explain or even try to think of examples, but it's definitely the way it reads to me. Less her intentionally mocking him in an unclear way and her just genuinely trying to make sure he wont snap at her again or harm her. I do wonder though, does JIMMY see it as sarcastic? Does he think her overcompensating comments come off as mocking? That would be an interesting read, especially because I know I wondered the same about the ways I overcompensated too. I knew I was forcing it, so I wondered how much the man I was with could tell it was forced, but who knows. On another note too.. I just don't see Polle being Anya at all. I DO see it as Jimmy facing the consequences of his actions, but the thing is, not only do I feel Anya does not have the capacity to even feel that rage (see how she still cares for every single member on board even the one who failed her + her taking the "Our darkest moments don't define us." quote to heart, until the end), but like we acknowledge with the rest of the story, Jimmy doesn't see Anya. At all. So both on a.. Anya's feelings standpoint, and a Jimmy's hallucination / digging into his brain standpoint, I just don't think Polle is meant to be a representation of her, but an interesting theory nonetheless! Swansea’s death was Jimmy’s way of completely avoiding responsability to what he did to Anya. The only ones that knew were Anya herself, Curly (who can’t speak anymore) and Swansea, because it is implied that Anya told him everything. My theory is that Jimmy perceives (or hallucinates) Swansea “hunting” him down because the only one who could incriminate him once they get back to earth is Swansea, the only one that could reveal his secret is Swansea. He sees him as a bigger threat than he is. Jimmy didn’t have a reason to fear/kill him until Swansea mentioned that Jimmy believed he was telling things to Anya in the Cockpit, but actually Anya was telling him about something (before she died).

Great video! What are your thoughts on the theory that Jimmy was drugging Anya? I've seen people point this out because 1) he knew how to make Swansea a cocktail to knock him out and 2) Anya seems "comfortable" around Jimmy before she realizes she's pregnant which some think it's because she was unaware of the assault or assaults. I say comfortable in quotes because i don't think she's actually comfortable around him but she can tolerate him. I also think the way she acts towards him in the post crash scenes are just her way of trying to not set him off. I think there's hints that she might be into psychology so she's using tactics to protect herself in some way. Praise him for even the bare minimum and he won't lash out since he is clearly more and more unstable post crash. For the Polle at the end in some way representing Anya, I saw a post by someone making the point that, up until then, Polle never has a dialogue box, just audible voice lines. During the end sequence, when there is a box, it is specifically blue like Anya's. Where this could be just so the player can 100% understand what is being said, the choice to specifically make it the same color makes me think there probably is something more to it.

i loved the theories so much, one thing I'd like to say is, yea i do believe that Anya is a strong, hard working person but the often times she is portrayed as not being one, like her moments of weakness (except from the later parts where we find out about what jimmy did to her) i think all that insecurity and that timidness only stems from the fact that she feels underqualified. Swansea, jimmy and curly are more or less qualified for the job though some of them might not be the best people (cough jimmy cough) they're still qualified, Daisuke is a whole another thing because of his semi-optimistic view on life even if it is just surface level, he is pretty outgoing but yes he wouldn't stand up for himself if he was questioned, LIKE when jimmy was forcing him to climb up the vent even though Swansea had always told them not to, he did at first resist but in the end he caved since jimmy forced him and he didn't stand up. Anya, being someone that's not qualified thinks that she's not a stakeholder when it comes to stuff and is thus subdued by the other characters (JIMMY) now I'm not saying she needs to be stronger boo-hoo what if you're underqualified, no because yea she does have a fire in her like we see in the passive aggressive moments and as it is presented in the nightmare but her fire is kinda extinguished due to her being underqualified, which again is truly only Pony Express's fault so yeah i think that's interesting

I do think Anya might've been initially underqualified and that pony express was definitely hiring underqualified people, but I think she did absolutely amazing with basically nothing she single handedly stabilized crash/burn victim in critical state with bandages and pain meds, and then proceeded to keep him alive while heavily pregnant even though he was in said critical state, not only that but she DRAGGED him out of HEAVY DUTY foam and rubble and still managed to keep him alive during that.

Amazing video! You basically said everything I wanted to say and way more! A curly cosplay would actually be so cool, and kinda made me think about doing an Anya one because I basically have the same hair as her! Also, here’s a game suggestion, OMORI. OMORI is a very long game, and has a lot of side quest stuff that doesn’t exactly have anything to do with the story, but it’s the game that got me into psychological horror games about a year ago, and the fandom is very similar to the mouthwashing fandom in my opinion. I have yet to actually play all the way through it, as it is like a 30 hour game lol but I’ve watched so many videos of people playing it and talking about it, and I would love to see you do a little deep dive into it! Love the video! I’m thinking of making a freaking slideshow about this game now, as I do with all my hyper-fixations lmao, and I will definitely be using this video for a lot of info in that slideshow.

Actually the card the shows up in the hall hallucination is Curly's, i think you got a lucky instance where you can not only see Anya's face (she's usually covered by other cards) but the top of Curly's card too, which show we weren't meant to see his face there lol. Both Curly and Jimmy are written very well, and very human, i do believe however that Jimbo KNOWS what he did is horrible, both things, it's just that he's a coward, and to admit such wrongdoing is too scary. I theorize that throughout life, Jimmy almost always had a safety net, be it Curly, relatives and other good friends, but perhaps one time, Jimbo had a bad expirience without anyone to bail him out, and so here we are - a man too afraid to get burned again, yet always having great ambitions. Remember that last part of the game happens entirely in his head, and for me, the last Polle conversation was the last ditch effort from the consciousness to get him on the right track (the fact that Polle didn't let Jim finish Anya's thesis, the "Poor you" bit, which sounds sarcastic rather than comforting, Jimmy IS capable of doing the right thing, but his cowardice always held him back) and failing.
