While i know it's not the correct name, as someone who recognized the game as "Sorry!" Originally, one thing stood out to me in that last moment with jimmy talking to Polle, where "Polle says: SORRY!" While on one end it is Jimmy essentially confronting his own ego and regrets, the proclamation of SORRY felt like it indicated the end of the board game.
@cceres4 күн бұрын
Hah! I thought of the board game with the SORRY! but wasn't paying enough attention to the background to imagine it was connected to anything other than the time some of my friends and I, all adults, sat down to play SORRY! at my house and at least two left there threatening to slash each other's tires.

Curly being represented by the white move spaces rather than an active player also shows how dehumanized he is that is a bit different from Anya. Jimmy doesn’t see curly we played as in certain parts but rather he only sees the bandaged, disabled curly as the one to save for his own benefit. He’s a prop to jimmys belief as a “victim who tries so hard to save everyone. Just if everyone listen to me!!!!”. That’s why the only piece in the safe zone is jimmy’s piece cause it’s all about him in the end and he steps over his friend to get there

Curly being the white on the board also kinda shows how he enables Jimmy's free movement, and how his safety came before anyas did.

i think that the reason why one of Jimmy's pieces is knocked over along with all of Anya's after her death is because now that she's dead, Jimmy feels like he doesn't have to feel guilt or think about what he did to her anymore. in all of his guilt hallucinations, he has to face what he did to Swansea and Daisuke, but when it comes to Anya, she doesn't even get a proper segment because he never even thought about what he did to her, instead he chose to focus on the fetus that he needed to get rid of

I’m so glad someone made an analysis on this! As a Swede, I found it pretty interesting that they put fia med knuff in the game and pondered the possibility of the pieces being indicative of the characters roles in the stories for a bit, but ultimately ended up forgetting about it when the story was done. Istg there’s so many hidden details once you go back and play it again. Great analysis!

As a Finn, the game reminded me of Kimble (apparently known as Trouble in the US and Frustration in the UK) which practically is the same game with a slightly different layout and a device for rolling dice built into the board. Fascinating how many subtle variations there are of the same game.

Another piece I noticed was the dice themselves! In a flashback scene as Curly, we see Jimmy rolled a 9 (as he is the only piece on the board that can “take” another piece, it being Anya’s). It’s symbolic of the fact that Jimmy had already done his crime, but the repercussions of it had yet to unfold, the pieces had not moved). To me it foreshadowed the rest of the flashback where Jimmy finds out and “takes care of it”

thank you so much for your clever analysis ! i love how thorough and detailled it is ! Despite spending 5 hours on the first playthrough, i did not take the time look closely at the board game... In fact, i thought it was just a visual pun, as in french, it's called "little horses" (petits chevaux) - I assumed it was also the english name of it ! When playing, we refer to the act of taking another players piece as "eating" it, and that wording makes the first board layout so much more disturbing, with Jimmy's piece being placed right behind Anya's... Also i can confirm it's an excellent friendship breaker. Especially when you're stupid lucky and keep on rolling 6's :)

Everyone saying the name of the game in their native language gave me an idea. The Polish name of the game is "chińczyk" which literally translates to Chinese/Chinaman. I have no idea why they named it that way, since the title is misleading and because of that many Poles think that the game is chinese, in fact if I didn't watch this video I would've never guessed it was swedish. Now I might be over-analyzing stuff again but I think that this may be a reference to the fact that both the characters and the player for a long time think that Curly was the one responsible for the crash, purely because he was the captain. His title was misleading too.
@AleiurfКүн бұрын
Isttg, they chose the perfect board game to be symbolic 😭 Though, it's interesting to learn the game title in other languages!

I really like the idea of Curly as the board or a non-player, because if you see him as the board, then it reflects how he sees himself an impartial part of the game that can't directly interact with the players (hence him doing literally nothing to stop Jimmy or disallowing Daisuke to enter the ship in the first place.) If you see him as a non-player it reflects his role as essentially a leader in name only, he can't prove himself, nor does he want to, through his actions and would rather watch as the game plays out (hence doing literally nothing to stop Jimmy or disallowing Daisuke to enter the ship in the first place.) Either interpretation works with Curly's dismissive attitude towards his responsibilities as captain.

To translate the name of the game from swedish ”fia med knuff”, ”fia” deriving from the latin word ”fiat” meaning ”may it be done”, so it would basically translate to ”may it be done with pushing” or ”may he make his way with push”. and to explain the game a little, of course there are different rules for different players, but you basically get to rerole the dice if you get a 1 or a 6, and gets to take out the character from the home if you get a 1. (But i have never played with two dice so there could be different rules) If you tailgate someone om the game (-always being closely behind them) it could be seen as a threat as if they knock you out you have to restart everything again, so to get out of that situation you basically have to stress to the saftey zone to eventually get out.Kinda funny if you think about Curly and Jimmys relationship and how he always tailed behind Curly and in that turn Curly, unwillingly got to the saftey zone and (hopefully) got out of the game. Could interprete this with Daisuke and Swansea but this feels already like a stretch. I grew up playing the game, i really recommend trying it out it is so fun!

Great video and analysis, but why is it that when anya gets verbally abused by Jimmy and doesn't fight back , she's a victim. but when Curly gets verbally abused by Jimmy and doesn't fight back, he's a "door mat." Jimmy verbally abused both of them.He's been violent with both of them in private. He even gaslights curly in one of their private conversations. And curly seems scared to ever make Jimmy angry. They're both victims, but curly is denied his victim status by the fandom because he's captain, Jimmy's "friend," and a man. People forget you can be an abuse victim regardless of your status, gender, and relationship to your abuser. If Curly was a woman, he wouldn't be getting as much hate tbh.
@savegalkissy5 күн бұрын
Curly is in a position above Jimmy that gives him more power to do something about his insubordination. At least theoretically. I don’t think there’s a scenario as-is on the Tulpar where a crew mate becoming aggressive like Jimmy does ends well though, because Pony Express basically handicaps any actual security to be had, with punishments and poor decisions. But yeah, because he has a higher role in the hierarchy of the team, he has more responsibility. I do think that would change if he was a female character, probably because he wouldn’t be so unaware of what a guy like Jimmy is capable of, friend or not.
@EmmaKennedy-q6k4 күн бұрын
He gets the hate cause he's the Captain he got Jimmy the job,and he did the evaluation. He knew Jimmy best and he brought him on board,let anya get hurt and did nothing and allowed his actions to continue which lead to the events of the game. Im sure he didn't try but he can be both,a doormat and victim
@SerialIntrovert4 күн бұрын
As other people have said, Curly has a position of authority on the ship and he needs to enforce the rules when people are out of line. The difference between Curly and Anya as victims of Jimmy is that Curly is in a position of power and Anya isn’t. Anya comes to him when she feels troubled about Jimmy, but Curly actively chooses not to confront Jimmy until it’s too late. Despite supposedly being the authority figure, he never actually exercises that power in any way that matters. Thus, I see him as a doormat

If curly knew he was afraid of jimmy, and how violent he can get, why would he get him a job as co-pilot, leaving him in a position of power ? why would he stay captain, knowing he wouldn't be able to stand up to jimbo if he hurt anyone on the ship ? Curly had everyone's safety as his responsibility. Anya didn't. Anya is allowed to avoid jimmy because her job isn't to keep him in line, but Curly's job *was* to keep jim in line, and he allowed himself to fail everyone, and let them all get hurt because he couldn't do his job after already signing up for it.
