i think that the reason why one of Jimmy's pieces is knocked over along with all of Anya's after her death is because now that she's dead, Jimmy feels like he doesn't have to feel guilt or think about what he did to her anymore. in all of his guilt hallucinations, he has to face what he did to Swansea and Daisuke, but when it comes to Anya, she doesn't even get a proper segment because he never even thought about what he did to her, instead he chose to focus on the fetus that he needed to get rid of

Curly being the white on the board also kinda shows how he enables Jimmy's free movement, and how his safety came before anyas did.
@natigalilel1135
@natigalilel1135 Ай бұрын
Curly being represented by the white move spaces rather than an active player also shows how dehumanized he is that is a bit different from Anya. Jimmy doesn’t see curly we played as in certain parts but rather he only sees the bandaged, disabled curly as the one to save for his own benefit. He’s a prop to jimmys belief as a “victim who tries so hard to save everyone. Just if everyone listen to me!!!!”. That’s why the only piece in the safe zone is jimmy’s piece cause it’s all about him in the end and he steps over his friend to get there

Curly could also be the white dice, because when he was the captain “Everything needed to go through him” and after the crash the characters use him to progress their own journey
@Im_ARock
@Im_ARock Ай бұрын
That's so true, plus the dice could represent the two captains, Curly and Jimmy, since the die change with every state. Starting with a 6 and 5, the 6 represents Curly with his high status as the captain and his good health while the five represents how even though Jimmy is also a captain, he is more of a co-captain and isn't exactly mentally stable, example being right after he crashed the ship, he hallucinated Polle following him. Right after the ship crashes, the dice change to a five and a one, which unlike the other sides is red, the five still being Jimmy, but now Curly is totally crippled and most likely won't be able to return back to his life, plus the red one can represent his pain and, in a more literal way, his red flesh peeking out from the white bandages. And at the very end, both die turn to ones, Curly still in his state of pain and Jimmy, now in absolute delusion and seeing multiple hallucinations. The two ones could also be referred to as "snake eyes", and snakes (After a quick google search) represent transformation and rebirth, like a snake shedding it's skin. Jimmy thinks that he is "taking responsibility," hence the rebirth and transformation, but both ones being red could also refer to how his "rebirth" was fake and not him actually taking responsibility But idk, that's just my opinion/thoughts, could be totally wrong and overthinking it tho! :D

While i know it's not the correct name, as someone who recognized the game as "Sorry!" Originally, one thing stood out to me in that last moment with jimmy talking to Polle, where "Polle says: SORRY!" While on one end it is Jimmy essentially confronting his own ego and regrets, the proclamation of SORRY felt like it indicated the end of the board game.

Great video. The only thing I disagree on is Jimmy thinking that last “saved” piece was Curly from the get go. For most of the game, that piece is himself. He prioritizes himself over everyone, including curly. It’s not until close to the end when his priority shifts and he starts thinking that his only way to salvation is vicariously through Curly’s survival. His priority shifts, instead of himself in the safe zone (cryopod) he prioritizes curly. (This is still ultimately a selfish act bc of the avoiding actual responsibility/ pushing it onto curly, but it IS a change.)

Another piece I noticed was the dice themselves! In a flashback scene as Curly, we see Jimmy rolled a 9 (as he is the only piece on the board that can “take” another piece, it being Anya’s). It’s symbolic of the fact that Jimmy had already done his crime, but the repercussions of it had yet to unfold, the pieces had not moved). To me it foreshadowed the rest of the flashback where Jimmy finds out and “takes care of it”

I really like the idea of Curly as the board or a non-player, because if you see him as the board, then it reflects how he sees himself an impartial part of the game that can't directly interact with the players (hence him doing literally nothing to stop Jimmy or disallowing Daisuke to enter the ship in the first place.) If you see him as a non-player it reflects his role as essentially a leader in name only, he can't prove himself, nor does he want to, through his actions and would rather watch as the game plays out (hence doing literally nothing to stop Jimmy or disallowing Daisuke to enter the ship in the first place.) Either interpretation works with Curly's dismissive attitude towards his responsibilities as captain.
@ayyylmao101
@ayyylmao101 Ай бұрын
To me, interpreting Curly as the board crosses over into the symbolism of Curly being the Tulpar. He provides every character a background for the evil to take place - the wheels in Curly, the use of the Tulpar, are Jimmy's to tweak as he needs.

you know if we see jimmy saving one piece from the get-go and that piece being curly, then i'd like to think that anya got out her 3 pieces simultaneously to try and save them, the 3 pieces being daisuke, curly and swansea, but of course 3 pieces is a lot to manage for one person, especially when jimmy's piece is breathing in her neck, it even makes sense with her being a nurse and literally having to take care of everyone and as she dies, the others follow and i also think the jimmy's piece which was just coming out of home was himself, he tried to save himself, before thinking of anybody else

I’m so glad someone made an analysis on this! As a Swede, I found it pretty interesting that they put fia med knuff in the game and pondered the possibility of the pieces being indicative of the characters roles in the stories for a bit, but ultimately ended up forgetting about it when the story was done. Istg there’s so many hidden details once you go back and play it again. Great analysis!

Hmm. That makes me wonder about the original name. I don't know if Fia means anything other than a name, but "med knuff" means "with pushing" because that variation of the game has the landing on opponents pieces to push them back to the start rule. Well, I guess pushing in one way or another is in the game.

To translate the name of the game from swedish ”fia med knuff”, ”fia” deriving from the latin word ”fiat” meaning ”may it be done”, so it would basically translate to ”may it be done with pushing” or ”may he make his way with push”. and to explain the game a little, of course there are different rules for different players, but you basically get to rerole the dice if you get a 1 or a 6, and gets to take out the character from the home if you get a 1. (But i have never played with two dice so there could be different rules) If you tailgate someone om the game (-always being closely behind them) it could be seen as a threat as if they knock you out you have to restart everything again, so to get out of that situation you basically have to stress to the saftey zone to eventually get out.Kinda funny if you think about Curly and Jimmys relationship and how he always tailed behind Curly and in that turn Curly, unwillingly got to the saftey zone and (hopefully) got out of the game. Could interprete this with Daisuke and Swansea but this feels already like a stretch. I grew up playing the game, i really recommend trying it out it is so fun!

Unrelated but me and my grandma play a version of the game called ‘wahoo’, or that’s what we call it. Really the only differences are that there’s an extra hole in the middle of the board we call ‘the sun’. if you land on one of the corners closest to the middle and roll a 1, you can move your marble (we use marbles) into the sun. If you roll another 1 you can get out of the sun and into another corner close to the sun. You can get out of home by rolling a 1 or a 6, you can’t pass your own marbles, and trash talk as much as possible. If anyone can find any connections between the version I’ve played my entire life and the one in the game, go ahead. All I can think of is the sun being the cyropod

This just goes to show how intrinsically intertwined these pieces are with their characters. In fact, i thought it was just a visual pun, as in french, it's called "little horses" (petits chevaux) - I assumed it was also the english name of it ! When playing, we refer to the act of taking another players piece as "eating" it, and that wording makes the first board layout so much more disturbing, with Jimmy's piece being placed right behind Anya's... Also i can confirm it's an excellent friendship breaker. Especially when you're stupid lucky and keep on rolling 6's :)

Daisuke’s “luck” at the board game could be symbolic of the fact that he is the only member of the crew who won’t struggle to provide for himself, or his family (in Swansea’s case) after Pony Express fires them. During Curly’s birthday party, Jimmy points out that everyone is basically screwed when they get back to Earth, except Daisuke, whose parents have him covered. Daisuke’s “luck” is a stark contrast to Anya, who explicitly states she doesn’t have any savings, and has a baby on the way. Also, Swansea’s piece right behind Jimmy’s could be symbolic of the fact that Swansea attempted to kill Jimmy, but in the end Jimmy was the last one standing.

Wonderful video, it's so cool how something so small can carry so much meaning! As a swede your pronunciation of "knuff" (push in Swedish) did throw me of a bit tho, it's said with a "K" sound in the beginning (think more similar to the "C" in can't) and not an "N" sound :)

That's "Mensch Ärgere Dich Nicht" I'm from Germany and I'd argue that this is the most famous boardgame around here

In German this game is called “Mensch, ärgere dich nicht” which translates to approximately “dude, don’t get angry” which I find hilarious

Another cool piece could be the idea of curly not playing the game and therefore losing all of his pieces through inaction (His crew)

In our country, the game is named "Človeče, nehnevaj sa" or "Person, don't get angry" if I were to translate literally. It's funny to see all of these different names that I don't recognise for a game we played during christmas and stuff

As another Swedish person who recognized the game. I've felt like noting some things: There's also Fia (without Push), which is a variant in which you can't land on spaces that already have pieces. Some variants allow you to leave your home tile when rolling a 6, resulting in leaving the hometile and then moving an additional 5 spaces, before getting to roll again. (This can speed up the game by a lot.) Another (somewhat) common variant allow you to block other player's progress, often forcing other players to push eachother's pieces. Many variants require some form of condition at the end before your piece is safe: Some of these variants raise the tension (by leaving a period in which the piece can be captured after reaching safety.) Some other variants simply extend the game (having to make another full lap around if you roll too high and miss your exit.)

The game is also called "Aggravation". Which is also kind of fitting for the story.

I loved playing this game as a child. We called it "airplane chess" in Chinese. Lovely analysis!

i think something else that could of been mentioned is the fact that Daisuke apparently won alot because of him having good luck but on the board it shows him in the worst spot out of anyone possibly showing how his luck "ran out"

“Nobody wins” Jimmy wins. And he gets to win in the first place because the system allows him to while also preventing everyone else from holding him accountable.

I've thought alot about what you said Curly being the white spaces, but I think he might be a different thing on the board game. After the accident the dice on the board get darker, and I thought more about the comment. What if Curly is more to represent the dice in the boardgame instead of the spaces. Everyone relies on the dice to move their pawns, much like how the crew relies on Curly for everything access wise on the ship. The dice are close but not able to do anything but move the pawns themselves, but can't stop them in their own rite.

This is almost beat for beat Sorry! Which I think uses cards instead of dice and there’s like multipliers on the board. Not relevant but interesting. This was such a cool insight into the story! I love these little details!

It’s kinda funny that in Czech it’s ,,Člověče, nezlob se!” That litterally translates to ,,Man, don’t be angry!”😂😭
