I really wish someone could make turorials using industry standard keys. Blender keys are so much mental effort for simple selection and translation maneuvers. I understand the thought process for having the first letter of an action be the same as the keybind for beginners but in the long run the keybinds gets so messy and convoluted.

@@CBaileyFilm ... when you said resist using the 'Industry Compatible'... I wanted to scream. its called 'Industry Compatible' because literally everything other than blender uses most of those keymaps in there tools. if like @MrPanncakes said "I really wish someone could make tutorials using industry standard keys." I think more non-hobbyist would transition to blender. I remember how long it even too blender to add the keymap preset, literal years. Autodesk pushes cheap student software on student to get you hooked on tools you will never be able to afford and that bad. Main problem: you will always be able to remap blender easily. but not all industry standard software are easily remapped. Does that make Industry standard worse? probably, will you be forced to us those keymaps like that in a job yes. Ultimately if your going to be a hobbyist, its fine. if you plan to work in a non-contractor, professional setting, it would behoove you not to be comfortable with industry standard. I've been to mutiple interviews where they sat me down and had me model or animate for about 30mins in front of them. you cant say, "oh what's the hot keys for this software?" Biggest offenders of hotkeys that made no sense. Older Blender, and ZBrush.

@xanzuls Жыл бұрын
Yea because he was showcasing the way you use the 3D cursor and how to use the search menu in Blender but that's not the fastest way to snap any object to vertex. You can change to vertex snap on the top and then move the object and it will snap (shift+tab to on and off the snap). Also, it's very very obvious that you can basically customize the hotkeys in Blender to work more like Maya or something even better than that, so using the default shortcuts as an excuse is kinda lame. Most pro blender users who are working at big studios like CD project red, Bungie etc. they don't use the absolute vanilla blender workflow and shortcuts because it's infinitely customizable with addons and custom shortcuts. Blender bob actually has probably a better video showing how to switch to blender from maya with some decent customization and hotkey changes.

I'm not sure this video does a good job of convincing. I just don't understand why my most commonly used actions should be so spread out and awkward? why should frame be on the period of the numpad? How does that make any sense for speed of workflow? why should we switch to "g,s, x, y, z" and all that vs just having "W,E,R"? Just to open up a quad view I have to press Ctrl Alt Q vs just space in maya. It sounds more like "Blender is a better program, just the navigation sucks" as opposed to "Blender navigation is superior, you just have to get used to it" This seems to go beyond unlearning muscle memory. I wish this video spent more time telling me why I'm gonna be faster with Blender, rather than showing me all the ways it's slower than maya. So maybe pressing Period for frame is no where near either hand and you have to stop what you're doing to press it, but here's why that actually will save you time. There wasn't any of that.

I never understood why Blender went back to the oldschool shortcut logic, where the shortcuts are placed according to letters that the function starts with. You and up with very wonky layouts and eventually you run out of that logic, and have shortcuts that makes no sense in terms of lettering, so you have to memorize them anyways, this especially applies for thing like move, rotate and scale, because you learn those quickly, because you use them all the time. So it makes more sense to use this logic on things that are not used as often but still are worthy of a shortcut, like parent, group, etc... It reminds me of the old softimage days where you had to have piano fingers to navigate... where dolly, move and zoom where in each end of the keyboard. Its just not intuitive or productive.
@runespaans2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I remember trying to learn Softimage and getting really painful RSI in a day. The instructor from Softimage even made fun of me, and that put me off the software forever. In my experience it's pretty much the same attitude with Blender. I rely on a narrow TKL keyboard in order to keep my RSI pain down, so I had to remap some of the numpad keys in Blender for that to work. There are still some functions I can't get remapped though. In the past, if you mention this to the Blender devs their reply has mostly been in the tone of: "No, YOU have to change, because WE know whats RIGHT", which is really provocative I think. I hope they don't have this attitude any longer.

Just use blender for what you need to tho, it can be great for geometry nodes and maybe rendering if you dont want to pay the redshift license .

Great tutorial, it's a painful transition. As awesome as Blender is I wish they added radial menus to it. My main complaint about Blender is there doesn't seem to be any effort put into the blender UI's flow. Maya UI is built around input efficiency. You get to all the tools really quickly. Blender has keyboard hotkeys that are not ergonomic, no QWER controls and you keep getting scroll down menus which are also slow. I just feel like someone could make a plugin to make this transition easier already. And using different hotkeys will not make online tutorials any less useful, that's just baloney.
