Great job! Apple still makes it more difficult than it needs to be forcing you down the iCloud path. How are they doing that you may ask? No select all or option to move all of them at once. I have 8,000 and my wife has 22,000 photos :). So far the best solution is to use Amazon photos since we are prime members and it’s free. It is a backup, not a sync like iCloud, so you can delete off your phone and keep them in Amazon photos. I’ve heard I could pay for iCloud, get them uploaded, then from iCloud website on my Mac, export to external SSD. Still working through this but making some progress.

I’m doing exactly this. I tried iPhone to OC to external HDD but kept failing. Tried PhotoMechanic on PC, but PM6 does not recognize the iPhone as a drive. Tried Mac finder, but it will only accept a sync of the iPhone. I don’t want to sync with my MBP (work laptop). Then I tried Mac w viewer to hard drive but it kept failing. So I am on day two of syncing iPhone to iCloud. It seeps stopping the sync. Such a PITA. If it stops again I’ll go buy the camera adapter and cancel iCloud. Edit: Why does Apple seem to think the “time” or “time remaining” of file transfers is this super secret ingredient of the universe? FFS tell us how long it will take. It’s a freaking math problem not a portal to another universe.

@@Pterodactyl-kn3vegood luck! The method I mentioned worked but it took me several days. You might have faster luck with a windows machine. My Mac would sleep after a few hours (another known quirk haha). So, in summary, I paid for a higher tier Amazon photos, uploaded everything, then I bought a new external drive for photos only, and downloaded them from Amazon photos to the drive, then I canceled the subscription. 40,000 plus photos, and over 10 g of video, all in one place now. Still a PIA. Cheers

Ok Just to point out. I got really excited when my USB hub arrived to get this working with my iPhone 14. When I plugged everything in my external HD was not showing up on my phone :( I was super bummed out. I left everything plugged in for over 10 minutes and now it appeared! Awesome. I'm not sure, but the USB hub may need time to charge up or something. I wanted to share my experience because although it works, it did not happen instantly for me as it shows in the video. So, you may just need to give it a little time.

You can also do this without the adapter. You then ensure that the power goes into the input next to the USB. Works fine for me.

Good question. You can if you have iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Those are the phones that can film directly to a drive. Hope that helps!

My typical practice on New Years Day is to transfer my iPhone photos from the year and then start fresh. I've used Image Capture in the past but as of yesterday, it isn't working correctly - only transferring a few images and then not working. I tried software updates, restarting the computer and phone, etc. and then came across your video as I was Googling troubleshooting steps. I might do it how you are doing it b/c I don't plan to upgrade from iPhone 14Pro this year (I assume iPhone 15 and higher doesn't need these cables for some reason?). Might I assume once we confirm the images have transferred we can feel safe to delete the images from the phone - doing it this way is there is no option to automatically "delete after transfer" ? That is what I liked about using Image Capture b/c there was no confusion as to whether or not all the images and videos made it - the phone would be empty of photos. Thanks for the video!

Thanks so much for this I have a iPhone 10xs max and just had my iCloud telling me I’ve reached my 200gb limit and now what’s me to pay £8.99 a month which is a complete ripoff and so expensive for what it is considering how much the hard drives are for 1tb. (phone has lightning on one end, USB into mophie, and the external hard drive is plugged into mophie via usb. Phone does not recognize the external drive, but just wondering. Great question, I am not quite sure. Do you know how your external drive is formatted? It should be exFAT. Here are the instructions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maOlfKyHlM2Zhcksi=m1nOLSirm3UejYWq REMEMBER. If you format a drive it will erase everything so you will want to save all your files on the drive somewhere else BEFORE YOU FORMAT. Hope that helps!

Hi. Thank you for these instructions. However, I ordered the exact SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD you specified, but today is the first I've used it transferring photos off my iphone 13. The 4th batch of photos that I started to transfer I got an error message "We found errors on this drive. To prevent data loss, repair this drive now." After about 10 minutes, I received "Windows was unable to repair the drive...." and try again. I've tried twice. It's not working. Now I see that this SSD has a high failure rate. It's the first time I'm using! Is there another one you can recommend or should I just exchange for the same again. For $250+ I would expect to last. Please advise. Thank you for your help!

I wonder if it is a formatting issue? I am not sure, but sometimes you need format your drive. HOWEVER, if you are going to reformat your HD make sure you save everything on the drive somewhere else because reformatting with cause you to lose those files.

I wish I had seen this video before I went to a Micro Center store today. I bought a Seagate ONE Touch portable storage device a year ago and was told that it is not compatable with iPhone ( I have IPhone 12) if I want to transfer photos directly to the device. One of the Micro Center store assitants recommended that I purchase a Lacie portable SSD and I did. However, it doesn't work for my iPhone 12 either and I contacted the company's helpline. I was told that Lacie portable SSD only works for Mac computers and iPad not for iPhones. I'm going to buy a Lighting to USB Adapter and a USB Hub tomorrow and see if I can transfer photos/videos directly to the ONE Touch portable device.

Yes...this is a great option for people wanting to move a few videos or photos at a time. Not for moving 6000+ photos and videos since you have to "SELECT" each and every one...There is no "SELECT ALL" button.

The transfer process can be really frustrating, especially if you have not stayed on top of it and have a ton of files. If I can, will I lose the posts I’ve made on social media? I’m nervous that if I delete them off my phone- that all my work i have created for clients on social media (Facebook) will also be deleted. Do you have a way to get selected photos from an iphone (13 in my case) onto a PC using a similar method instead of the Import Photos function in Windows? Something like the method you show here, but saving to a folder on my PC instead of a hard drive? For some reason I thought I could connect my phone to my laptop and export, but the phone does not recognize my PC's hard drive as a Location. The Import Photos function on the PC is just a pain when I only want to move 10-15 of my 2500 photos.

Save option is not enable when transferring to WD external harddrive. Is there any additional settings need to be enabled for it ?

I’m a senior and I hate when I delete a photo and I loose it. I’m getting a new 16 pro soon. Would this be easy for me to use? I wish there was a way to keep photo’s and video’s on my phone permanently. Thank you

This might be a formatting issue. However, BEFORE your reformat your drive make sure that you save all of the files on the drive to another location because reformatting will remove all of your files. Have you tried this already?

I have been working on this for 2 hours. I get the hard drive to show in my Files. I select where I want the photos to go. I select the photos, tell them to go to Files as you said to do. I don't ever get the Files to come back so I can select the hard drive and save it. Photos keeps trying to send it to Files on my phone and tells me I don't have enough memory on my phone (iPhone 14). The reason I am trying to transfer the photos to the hard drive is because I have no memory left on my phone due to these photos. What am I missing?

Great question, it does! Give the time of creating, resolution, size all of that. Is there specific metadata you are looking for? I can make sure it keeps that specific info you are looking for.

When I try to save the file to the drive the Save option is grayed out. Any reason why? I think I know why, the drive is set to Read Only. I can fix that quick.

It takes forever when I try to move a few thousand photos to the external drive? It is not the time it move, it’s the time the phone take for preparation, any reason why?

I'm trying this and is working so thank you for that! Only issue is that I can only move about 2,000 photos at a time or else the photos app crashes and the download fails. Any way around this or any reason you think of why this might be happening?
