For example. John makes example of this point extremely well in his lead break in 'Covered In Rain' He eventually lifts the roof off the place, when soloing in the higher 3rd and 4th octave. *Apparently he wrote this song a few days after the towers went down on Sep 11th. The 'heart and soul' that he pours out onto the fretboard in this solo, is purely amazing! After hearing his 'Any Given Thursday live DVD' * Made 'me' a JM fan for life! Morale of the story is. 'He inspires Everyone to become a musician' 🎸

I notice that most of the licks played are still descending lines. I think this comes from the jazz vocabulary, particularly pianists, as it's easier to roll your right hand fingers downward than upward. So we're used to hearing riffs that descend to a resolution. Similarly to your recommendation to give yourself room to evolve a solo to brighter and more exciting higher pitches, using upwards or ascending riffs adds tension and excitement to a solo. Which you can balance in a tension/release fashion with descending riffs that resolve more.

He’s talking about taking the space that you’re working up in pitch. Not only taking a lick in an ascending like.

Hey John! Thank you for sharing your insights and experience. Really appreciate it! The first time I became aware of you was back in 2007 when my son was a baby. I was doing some house work as my wife and son were out and I had KZbin playing in the background and it randomly came up with your performance at the Crossroads 2007 Belief. I heard that opening improv and it really caught my attention so I ran to my computer to see who was playing. To me that performance was transformative. However after all these years it still eludes me. I just don’t know what you were playing there. Is there a breakdown video you can share because it was so interesting and emotive. I’d love to learn how you made phrasing choices. Many thanks! Igor

John - “Doyle Bramhall the 2nd is the master…” Millenials and Gen Z - “Siri, what is a Doyle Bramull the second?” Everyone needs to listen to Arc Angels from 1992. Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton backed by Double Trouble. A brilliant record. John was only 14 when it was released, but I’ll bet he was listening to it.

A couple of points: 1) The shorter a string, whether fretted higher up, or simply a short-scale instrument, the less harmonic content, relative to fundamental. That's why analog octave-up and octave-down boxes sound and behave so much "better" when we pick above the 9th fret, and is also why many overdrives sound so much "smoother" higher up. It's a simple matter of physics. I mention this because playing higher up makes us focus on the melody, rather than working the harmonic content, which is a good direction for any solo to take. 2) Why are the strings/keys on a piano arranged from low to high, going from left to right? It would be no more mechanically or physically difficult to make a piano that reverses that sequence. I'll propose that it's for two major reasons. For most humans, language function tends to be localized in the left hemisphere, which also manages the right side of our body, and handles all movement on that side. So when we want notes to serve as a proxy for language, most people will want to use their right hand to express those "thoughts"; this translates into the "upper" half of the keyboard. (I also find very few players use their left foot to operate their wah to make their guitar "talk".) But why are *higher* notes (including those in the middle range) the ones we choose for melody? If one looks at adult-infant interactions (in either direction) pitch is used to convey emotional state. We talk low to either console/calm or to convey deep anger (but in the case of infants, primarily the former), and raise the pitch of our voice to convey what passes for content to wee ones. We also raise the pitch of our voice to direct or arouse attention (do a search for "motherese" or "infant-directed speech"). Going in the other direction, when people are asked to assess the state of an infant, based on recordings of their cry, higher pitch is perceived as conveying greater urgency. So, making a solo progress up the fretboard increasingly snags our attention, for reasons based in instinctive and infancy-established connections between pitch and attentional connection with someone else.

"You should probably leave" by Chris Stapleton is a song with a solo that goes lower than the rest of the song. I think this opinion really limits guitarists of their soloing abilities.

That is a really good song. The opening riff (not the solo) does indeed run from higher notes to lower notes. And then the actual solo break later in the song runs from low to high along a scale, and then back down the scale primarily. Those guitar parts are killer, and they are also about as elementary as one can get. Not really comparable to the kinds of solos John is working here. Just goes to show that there are exceptions to any rule, and the rule still works.

He looked really annoyed.. Finally, he found a few notes that sounded good... He settled in, lit his pipe... and watched as most of the people walked out.. one by one.. I felt kind of sad seeing this. I've seen two of the three Kings... How many have you seen, Goober?
