Usually between £10 to £13 a night (£10 at Beadnell) but all you get is somewhere to fill up your water barrel, bins for your rubbish and a place to empty your toilet cassette but its safe, clean and well ordered. Many years ago there were very few regulations and laws. The regulations only turn up to limit bad behaviour. There is no way to explain my attitude in full, but briefly Human nature fits better with the carrot than the stick. Reward good behaviour. People who "leave no trace" (or better, leave it better than when they arrived), morally speaking, are part of the solution, not part of the problem. But the letter of the law too often takes precedence of the spirit of it. Regulations and laws are bad at telling the difference, up until you get before a judge and jury, which is too expensive to be practical.

Would I like someone parking up outside my home. Nope, especially when there are loads of campsites in most areas. There's another issue that no-one is talking about openly, but it is very real. Homeowners are usually determined to prevent other homes from being built, because this would reduce the scarcity value of their properties, possibly significantly. If we see large numbers of people becoming van dwellers, the whole economy, which is being propped up by artificially high property values, could come crashing down. So, in order to prevent that from happening, local residents are inevitably determined to make like as difficult as possible for van dwellers, to try to ensure that, as far as possible, van life is not a viable option for people.If people remain forced into a competitive housing market, houses will remain artificially high; which is what homeowners want. The last thing they want is a viable, and cheap, way of living. The guy you spoke to hinted that residents were concerned about van proliferation, and how that proliferation could be encouraged through social media; so these home owners are well aware of what could happed if they don't make van life as difficult as possible. This is never discussed, but you can be sure that home owners will be thinking it.

The noise they make can be very distracting and hard to sleep for those of us in tents and or pickup shells. I've always been puzzled why they don't just buy a zero degree mountaineering sleeping bag. They are cheaper than a diesel heater and you can also use them backpacking. I get why they run them at dinner time, since they cook inside. That's fine. But during quiet time in a campground...it seems unfair to those of us who are being quiet.

However suggesting we pay £15-20 to stay overnight is a no no, that's a total rip off & makes van life pointless, it also gives greedy councils the wrong idea - after all, most of them are tory money grabbers...., literally can't afford £15-20 a night - at ABSOLUTE MOST it should be £5 for an overnight stay - otherwise we end up in a situation where trying to live for just 1 week costs more than the £120 a time it costs to fill up the fuel tank - stay safe, thanks.

I know exactly where you are there ( so proud to be the midway point of the Cornish walkround footpath ) Been staying there for years but the ' Johnny come lately brigade ' and second homers plus the lock and leave investors have ruined it. They never used the local pub so it closed as did the shop. They vote to put their own signs up as they want to be the rulers of their little world. The original fishing families that lived there must be turning in their graves to see what its become 😮.

You can't have missed that No Camping sign. What are you driving along not looking ahead of you? Don't look for sympathy for disturbing someone deliberately on their property just because you want to. Why SHOULD they allow you on then charge you money? They want privacy and THEY already paid for it. How arrogant. Move on!

It’s not their property Karen. What happened to this being a free country, If someone parked in front of my house they’re welcome to. Basically get fucked 👍

What’s the problem? No fucking camping here, but you know you see the sign but you didn’t give a shit mate so you said fuck it. I’ll camp here and wonder why people get pissy at you.

They shouldn't charge people to stay overnight there because those type of situations ruin the landscape. I grew up and I'm from Seattle Washington, and the increase of urban campers has destroyed our local beaches, it's polluted our waterways, and now a glacial lake that I grew up next to called bitter lake is completely and usable because of the camping that has taken place. The campers urinated and defecated into the lake, which is small, and it caused a whole bunch of algae bloom and that has killed off all the local fish, the entire West portion of the park has been partitioned and fenced off permanently until they go through a complete bio overhaul which includes soil removal, soil replacement, replacement of native plants that were destroyed, replacement of anti-erosion landscaping, it's just a huge mess. And it's costing millions.

❤You handled that situation very well. Cleaning up the beach area was a lovely thing to do. The man that spoke to you, he seemed to calm down, I guess he could see that you were a lovely person👏😊

The new mantra is "leave it better than you found it!" I've done the same when car camping as you kinda always have the "It would be messier if I hadn't stayed here" as a backup and further evidence that there are no nefarious intentions to your stay. All outdoors enthusiast youtubers should promote this in their videos in all honesty. Always take an extra black sack with you to clear up. Top tip for a great rare steak, keep the pan dry and go max heat. Oil or butter the steak not the pan then you can get the pan searing hot without smoking out the van and get those seared sides. I think I would have found a different location for breakfast and try to get out of there early to avoid any confrontation tho I appreciate it is easier to make that decision with the benefit of heindsight but if I'm somewhere I'm not totally sure I'm supposed to be, I tend to get out of there pretty quick. Thing is, I've got a car so pop out the window covers and it is just another parked car and not a van life vehicle. Great to see the work you are doing and the van setup as I am currently planning a build.

I blame social media vlogs like this ... I used to love wild camping and done it for years, as did others. Then you have tubers doing loads of videos and suddenly the countryside was full of idiots with cheap tents, loud music, getting pi*sed, lighting fires and then leaving their trash ... same with 'van life' videos, people have quietly done it for years with no bother, behaved, cleaned up and locals fine ... tubers film all the spots, make it about barbecues and 'chilling out' and now every kn*b with a £1000 van + sound system is rocking up and ruining it ... don't blame the locals at all

I’ve been doing this long before social media even existed and there has always been problems with antisocial behaviour and people disrespecting areas. Don’t blame the internet blame the bad people.

I know where that place is, and just checked on their website... "Due to a number of reasons we do not permit overnight camping of any sort on this beach - no tents, vans, campers, caravans etc - PLEASE DO NOT OFFEND OR UPSET THE RESIDENTS OF ******** BY IGNORING THIS Legal campsites with lovely facilities are available nearby" I don't know if they put this up before or after your visit, but I agree with you; they're missing out on what could be a vital income stream if they 'policed' it more warmly. As you say, he turned out to be quite reasonable, but he could have opened a little more calmy.

The problem is 90% of camper van owners have zero interest in camp sites that are now charging £25-30 a night - absolute total rip off & make going out in the van financially impossible, we need a campaign to get sensibly priced park ups, well, frankly, free parks ups - like the rest of the evolved world, the UK is draconian in these terms.

what part of we dont want people camping on our beach do you not understand would you welcome somebody who just turned up and stopped on your front garden against your wishes ? no didnt think so
@michaelportaloo198111 ай бұрын
Their sign is a bit ambiguous. Sleeping in a vehicle overnight isn’t necessarily camping if you consider yourself too tired to drive away, especially if their are no outward signs that you are there to enjoy the location, eg an awning or levellers etc.

That's why they hate campers like you. You rock up and start getting out your char and table and sit drinking a beer. It's not a campsite. This is precisely the sort of behaviour that has ruined it for all us decent campers.
@mymobile501411 ай бұрын
Yes he says it's non alcoholic, but to anyone walking by, it's just a beer. But it could also have been a cup of coffee. You don't treat a car park like your own veranda. In the 19 years I've been camper vanning I've never known such hatred for us and it's all because of people like this entitled idiot.@@junehall2177

It’s a difficult situation but they’ve made it very clear they don’t want MHs camping there. Tbh I understand, we have the same problem with Vans parked everywhere where I live, tiny beach car parks full of MHs. In the summer in Scotland there’s far too many MHs so that every view is blocked by them. Visitors and locals alike can’t visit some beaches because of MHs We’ve gone to great expense to provide Aires in some of the most beautiful places but they won’t use them because they have to pay a minimal charge. Cemetery car parks are full but of them too so locals have had enough now. The situation is only going to get worse . I know some won’t like what I say and I mean no disrespect Shaun, I love your videos but respect locals wishes and you’ll find them helpful. That man was wrong too by being confrontational

It's too bad that some people ruin it for others that are respectful+want to make the place look better than when they got there.

His frustration is probably well-founded, but it's hardly the way to express it. Thought you handled it very well. People often turn reasonable when confronted directly. A couple of cheap cameras would give you peace of mind without having to get out of the van and look around! Great vid - thanks.

Good job with cleaning up the beach and also talking to the local man about your opinion and offering some advice. I was nervous when you went outside during the night. But I figured things were okay or else there would not have been a video. Way too cold for me to be sleeping in a van, heater or no heater. Glad you were able to make it thru wearing all of your clothes!
