Initially, both India and Australia were two separate plates after breaking up with Gondwana. As per plate tectonics, they started their voyage in respective directions separating away from one another due to the spreading at mid oceanic ridge in the Indian Ocean. Once the spreading started to cease some 40-50 million years ago, both the plates amalgamated forming today's major Indo-Australian plate.
