upper layer of ocean is relatively colder 20:15 upper layer is supposed to be warmer than the layers below i guess, because of the sun rays. and cold water is denser

Yes, sir's statement is incorrect. Actually, the upper warm layer of ocean gets dragged by the easterlies towards the eastern margins of continent (say south america) giving rise to warm currents there.
