The Ministry of Education has announced moves to encourage Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students to continue upgrading by opening up more opportunities for them. For example, students achieving a Grade Point Average of at least 3.5 in their Higher National ITE Certificate exams will be guaranteed entry into a polytechnic from 2027. The top 10 per cent or about 1,000 students across all Higher Nitec courses are expected to benefit each year.

Their skills are very valuable and appreciate in other developed countries. But in Singapore they rather import in cheap labour for such skills

Chan Chun Sing, he stated that “different groups of Singaporeans have different concerns”. He went on to say that “no single measure will express an individual’s ‘cost of living’ pressures fully, given the different needs and wants, the evolving aspirations and the potential gap between aspirations and anticipated means.”

Not just for ITE. Even prestigious majors like medicine the government take so long to adapt to the shortages of doctors and ultimately who fill the seats? Foreigns

MoE Chan, good show. Telling it "as it should be", PRACTICAL, ADAPTABILITY and being good at their choice of work. 😂

It is concerning that Chan does not seem to think this necessary. Either that or he is completely oblivious to the needs of those who have fallen through the cracks in Singapore. Neither scenario is particularly reassuring from a government whose general election pledge in 2015 was to ensure that no one is left behind. Experts have opined that structural adjustments are required in Singapore to ensure that equality is maximised. Yet, a minister seems to be trivialising the issue by suggesting that it is simply a case of “different groups of people wanting different things.

After 50 years of rule - uninterrupted - the PAP has failed to develop sustainable (population growth, education and economic development) policies that will enable locals to drive our economy, that is, creating jobs and attracting investments, with foreigners playing a complementary role. Instead, the situation has been turned on it head. Foreigners are now the main force behind our economy and Singaporeans are playing the supporting role. Lees’ words, not mine. Dr Chee Soon Juan

While I have no doubt that different groups of people want different things, I think that Chan has failed to touch on a very fundamental point. There are wants and then there are needs. There are certain things that are so basic that it isn’t even about desire. Rather it is about survival. The question here then is whether or not the government is doing enough to support people who fall into those categories. Not raising this in Parliament at all is glaring by omission.
