Shapes have meaning. That may sound crazy, but hear me out. Let's explore how cinematographers and directors create shapes inside the frame to add visual storytelling to their films.

Thats the true genius of the death star, a simple feeling of a patriotic imperial symbol, good-round. .... Then multiple beams shoot out and you see it. As someone who studies animation, this is not a coincidence. They teach this concept of using shapes in character design from the very beginning.

Hmm but do you think it can cause a mental block in students by creating preconceived ideas of what ideas SHOULD look like, instead of the student figuring out on their own? Am I the only one thinking that many people associate Kiki with that spiky shape and Bouba with that curvy shape because the letter K appears twice in Kiki and the letter K is pointed? Meanwhile, Bouba is more associated with curves since the letter B appears twice in that word and the appearance of B has two curves in it.
@PauLtus_B
@PauLtus_B 8 жыл бұрын
As that would work through different languages, it would mean it also works with when these sounds would be written in Chinese or something. That said it may not be coincidence. You could also argue that we started to write the "K" sound as a pretty sharp form because it's a sharp sound. Like the i's look and sound sharper and the B, O and U look and sound more "round". Even think about how "tense" we have to keep our face when we make these sound, and looking at the sound frequency spectrum these sharper sounds are more likely to have more peaks in the higher ranges.
@PauLtus_B
@PauLtus_B 8 жыл бұрын
Also: am I the only who hopes that one day people will stop using "am I the only one" in front of sentences.
@MultiWilliam15
@MultiWilliam15 8 жыл бұрын
PauLtus B 'Am I the only one' is a hyperbole. Obviously, I don't think I'm the only one who thinks like that. I just want to open some conversation about the said topic because no one is talking about it. Anyways, I also think it has to do with association with sound. When we hear 'boing' we think of something bouncy or something curvy. Meanwhile, 'tick' sounds hard, as if it's the sound of two hard objects clashing. The bottom line is, I don't think it's just a work of coincidental correlation. There are many ways in which the letters B and K could represent some experiences, and we're just subconsciously following it.
@PauLtus_B
@PauLtus_B 8 жыл бұрын
Liam Cirge And I support that line of thinking. But it certainly not just the letters. I do think it's a correlation between sound and shape and I therefore I think both the K and the kiki shape are sharp. But I don't think we consider the kiki shape more fitting with the word kiki because of the shape of the letters themselves.

To be pedantic: The character was named 'Baloo' because that was his name in the original book, long before there was animation to go with him. And, he was given the name 'Baloo', because 'baloo' is (roughly) the Hindi word for 'bear'. They didn't name him 'Baloo' to go with his cuddly and disarming nature, he already the name. But great video!

I wouldn't exactly consider Kiki among the most iconically friendly, but you definitely have a point. My guess would be that there are further associations with the sound of these words that haven't been discussed in this video. The vowel sounds are also somewhat associated with pitch, with front vowel sounds being seemingly higher than back vowel sounds. And since larger creatures have deeper voices, the dark "o" sounds in Boba Fett can feel more threatening. Meanwhile, Kiki has a sharp sound to her, but not necessarily harmful, and rather busy.

Only problem with this is it has a very limited frame of reference in terms of the larger spectrum of movies. The animated section, in terms of direct scrutiny, was nothing but Disney (aside from 5 seconds of Spirited Away during the introduction of the sub-topic). The question is, are these shapes prevailent because of base human nature or are they arbitrary convention? Showing examples from films not exclusive to Hollywood would have better served the point ...
@English_Thespian

Maybe the connection between shapes and characteristics/emotions are based in human nature, but filmmakers can deliberately exaggerate or exploit it to drive a point home to the audience.

MusketWalrus I'm fascinated to know how different cultures go about it though, as over the years, different people hone in on different conventions; an obvious example being that European-descendants put emphasis on the mouth while Asian cultures are more impressed with the eyes, hence American animation having characters with larger mouths and Japanese anime having great big emotive eyes. You can even see it with their emoticons, :D vs ^-^
@kurvos

Not to mention, western animation emphasizes in different bodyshapes much more to show off different types of characters, while animes don't. Like, they CAN have crazy bodyshapes, but it's more inconsequential. It's more a focus on fashion trends in animes. Like, have you ever noticed how some male antagonist have lose straight hair hanging down below their shoulders, while no male protagonist has? Kinda ironic, seeing people tend to claim Japan is more open to guys being effeminate. But... at the same time, not really. Both that type of haircut and more effeminate behavior is associated with being evil, sadly... even to some extent in western stuff, but not as often in animation.
@samwallaceart288
@samwallaceart288 8 жыл бұрын
kurvos In that respect I prefer anime, because characters aren't bound by their appearance. With older Disney films you pretty much know just seeing their silhouette what's going to happen to their character. Anime gives its characters a lot more flexibility.
@kurvos
@kurvos 8 жыл бұрын
Samuel Wallace Except, those traits makes it clear in anime you're a villain. You won't find a male protagonist with long straight lose hair reaching below the shoulder, feminine clothes, feminine behavior and mannerism, and with a clear interest in other men. Well, except if you watch yaoi I suppose. But outside of that, they make that clear of it being a villain. Which is equally bad to me.

@jonassthr283

Luke Cage is a prime example of why story comes first and imagery comes second, the characters a weak and undeveloped. The acting is bland and plain boring, the abilities and fight scenes have been shown before in both Daredevil and Jessica Jones. The story is totally uninteresting to me and predictable, and just a personal opinion, but it tries to shove the black community problem down our throat a little too much. But yes, the imagery is pretty good now and then, especially whenever Cottonmouth is there.
@Ten_Thousand_Locusts
@Ten_Thousand_Locusts 8 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree less with you. I think the writing is very good and the thing is Luke Cage isn't really about the fight scenes, it's about the characters and I think they are portrayed very well by their actors. Especially Cottonmouth. SPOILERS Even though he was the villain and overall bad guy, I couldn't help but feel a bit saddened when he got killed off so quickly, because he was such a great character. It was kinda like Killing Vaas in FC3 just about halfway through the game. It's very ballsy, to kill off an interesting character that early on and I think it paid of pretty well in Luke Cage.

Geometry and geometric shapes have been shaping and steering our minds since the earliest days of fine art. All or almost all Allegorical art, religious art, from as far back as the very beginning of Christianity and before is made from basic geometric shapes, especially paintings. Triangles direct your eyes to a point that the artist wanted to be the focal point. Horizons and vanishing points are triangles. I'm not going to give a complete art history class so I think you get the point.

@Evil Koala Eye shapes are used as a way of conveying a character's personality in anime. Often times a character with a confident or aggressive personality will have "tsurime" eyes, where the outer corners slant upward. This eye shape looks harsher. A character who is meek or shy will have "tareme" eyes, which are more rounded and slant downward on the outer corners. This eye shape looks softer. TV Tropes has a page for each of these. @person man if you want to spread propaganda do it somewhere where said propaganda is relevant instead of just randomly spreading hate. Neither the video, nor my comment relate to politics, let alone this specifically, in any way. If you have nothing better to do other than antagonising the left you're a part of the problem. Want to change minds? Quit the mockery and treat your opposition with respect. If you don't want to change minds, just stop.

@@alansmithee419 1.) Yes, it's Whataboutism, no doubt. 2.) But it's not propaganda. The arguments presented in the video that "person man" posted are based on facts, that the Left said literally themselves. 3.) Calling everything "propaganda" that doesn't fit your narrative is literally the opposite of "quit the mockery" and "treat your opposition with respect". 4.) And not to forget, that it has been a big majority of the Left (Democrats especially) that has been mocking and not treating their opponents with respect, for a couple of times now. Just today, two Democratic congresswomen were finally banned from visiting Israel, because of their anti-Israel and anti-semite hate speech, which they still did not apologize for. So, I advise you inform yourself better next time before issuing a statement based on emotional reactions. Thank you and have a nice day.

@@ikidu1102 sorry about the whole "propaganda" thing, I just don't really know what else to call it (I don't do politics that much so I really don't know what to say there), sorry for the misunderstanding. Your fourth point: both sides say this, and that leads to neither side actually trying to solve the problem. The mockery never ends because neither side can accept that they're doing it too, blame all of it on the opposition, and then we never get anywhere. Also, we have evidence of the right doing it right here: this person's comment, with nothing to go alongside the link (and a lack of response to me) was clearly a statement of "oh look here's something stupid that my opposition has done, you want to believe them now?" But of course you'll ignore that fact and just deny it. Don't defend his methods just because you agree with his overall point, surprisingly both the right and left are capable of being stupid. He was also clearly trying to spawn a hate filled comment thread (again, the lack of response provides evidence for this as well. I'm aware he could simply not have been online for this time, hence "evidence."), thankfully so far it's just been us, but I won't be responding again, lest it works (and to avoid the mess if it does anyway). And this'll be a shock for you: I agree with him too, but I don't agree with this blatant attempt to antagonise people with no productive value.

Is it a coincidence that the fluffiest and least threatening character in animation is named Baloo? Well, yes! If you read Rudyard Kipling's novel, Baloo was a very different character. He was a wise old mentor to Mowgli, and like most other characters in the book he kills to survive.

This doesn't make sense to me. I know of this phenomenon for a long time but only as a linguistic relation, the extrapolation to good and evil is contradictory. Triangles, in fact, have a long tradition in mythology as representation of the divine. Horns, on the other hand were the divine symbol of the mesopotamian gods.

Yeah, there's actually lots of B.S. in this video I think. I'm sure we just get scared by things like knives/swords/sharp teeth and that's about it. Everything else is B.S. 1:50 funny how the eyes and mouth switch, yet he's trying to attribute it to him being less threatening for the comedy. Also, neglecting his tie.

In mythology, but those stories don't apply to the world of design and our culture. In design we are taught the principles of visual communication. Designers use shapes, colors, contrast, composition as tools and depending on how you use it is where the magic really happens. Circles are seen as friendly and ignorant while triangles are seen as intelligent and threatening. All the other shapes have "feelings" as well. However, these rules can be broken. It's all about context.
@CESSKAR

ThereGoesKJ "Our culture". Okay, what about the rest of darth vaders's helmet? Round. Ultron? Round. Voldemort? Round... Does Spock's hand symbol represent evil? And what is that "world of design" you speak of? Did pre-modern artists know nothing of _design_? Anyway, the guy even says it is present in every culture and every historical time (and, indeed, the linguistic relation is).
@AhmedAldoori

To respond to your comment about contradictions; Vader's helmet, Ultron, Voldemort - (all being round) this is a specific thing artists/storytellers learn to use as a means of contrast. You make the character seem welcoming and nonthreatening on the outside silhouette, but his or her actions become an unexpected twist (evil). Not every sharp/pointy design is an evil character, but something in our subconscious recognizes sharp pointy things as threatening - spiders, scorpions, thorns, spikes, tiger stripes, etc. Whereas round things are certainly perceived as welcoming and cuddly - Kirby, Pikachu, Totoro, bean bags, balloons, mochi icecream, cupcakes... Imagine a cupcake that looks like a spiky sea urchin - a part of you would resist wanting to put that in your mouth. Things that are more square represent strength, rigidity, and solidity. Imagine a castle being round and curvy, it wouldn't seem as imposing. A lot of military things are also rectilinear (square-like) such as hummers, riot shields, as well as sci-fi armor (Master Chief). I've worked here and there on both movies and video games (GW2 being most recent) where this comes into play, and as a character artist, I can tell you this holds true at a very visceral level in terms of how we respond to shapes. I teach this exact concept in my class at Art Center College of Design, and it's up to the designer or storyteller to use his or her tools to their advantage in this regard.
@CESSKAR
@CESSKAR 8 жыл бұрын
Ahmed Aldoori Thanks for your comment. But, in any case, what would be the point of "You make the character seem welcoming and nonthreatening on the outside silhouette, but his or her actions become an unexpected twist" if those characters are already presented in a threatening way, like Darth Vader, with that musical tone? Voldemort, in the 4th film is presented also in a similar way. In the case of Ultron I can't remember. And the Pikachu example you give has the ears and the tail very spikey. I can also think of unicorns, a criature never associated with strength or violence, with that horn. As for the castles being round there are in fact a lot. The first ones in the early middle ages (VIII-IX) were like this, and later on, as a defensive system against artillery were also round, like the Bellver Castle (Majorca). Castles, as well as military tools, have always had an utilitarian priority. And I would say, some of the designs make the latter referential symbol, and not the other way around. Modern fire weapons, for example, have a threatening look wich, in ancient times, I don't think they would.

The kiki and bouba thing for me was because kiki is a very sharp and harsh word while bouba is a very rounded and smooth word. If you look at them when they're written out, the letters K and I are both sharp lines and K has sharp angles, while every letter in bouba is rounded in some way. It works for the sound too, "ki" is a very harsh sound, while bou and ba are very soft sounds.

This video was fascinating! I didn't actually realize the use of shapes in animation to portray characters in a way the artists and writers want the audience to view them. I never realized the use of a character's setting as a metaphor for the situation they're in, such as the use of blinds to portray a jail cell. I'm going to pay more attention to this as i watch movies and as i make short films!

It's less about symbolism and more about conveying a message (which, I admit is kind of symbolism's purpose). Mr. Plinkett puts this very nicely: "You didn't notice this kind of stuff... But your brain did."

every material man made thing is taken from nature, nothing is really invented but borrowed ideas from the world around you.... everything in nature is geometry, geometric shapes are symbols, therefore symbolism is within everything.... It's only the spoken word that has put the symbolism into a subconscious state, although this can change.... a better understanding would be to look at cymatics.
