I can kind of get behind this being a holiday movie. If Die Hard is one then Edward Scissorhands should be too. It does take place around the holidays, and the family that takes in Edward shows some holiday spirit in their actions. I like some of the things about this movie and I don’t like some of the things about this movie. Like all of the people in the neighborhood. But I saw that coming from the beginning so I guess I’m not disappointed. Enjoy!

The reason he has scissor hands is because he was the lettuce cutting robot and his father died before he could give him normal hands, that's also why he didn't age or have to eat.

This story is a fable, it isn't meant to stand up to logical dissection. It's best to just roll with it. Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder were a couple for a while during this period.

Yeah. You can't tell anyone today to simply "roll with it". Technically, I JUST made it into the millennial generation. However,my parents being baby boomers, I was raised differently. Back when we were, not merely ALLOWED to go outside. But, we ACTUALLY WANTED TO!(imagine that...) Didn't have a whole lot of money for a bunch of video games, or even many toys! So, we used this thing. It was called an "IMAGINATION" (Im-maj-in-a-shun) And, so we'd leave the house after breakfast, sometimes had to come home at lunch. But, always came back for dinner. If we were allowed back out, after dinner (usually summertime) many of us without cell phones ticking off the hours, mins., and seconds of our lives. And CERTAINLY before they BECAME our lives, entirely. We just needed to get home when the streetlights came on. Before Using cell phones for everything from an alarm clock, to a quick way to bury our heads in the sand, when faced with the HORROR of actually making eye contact, or ANY kind of contact with another living, breathing, hearing, speaking fellow human being with a beating heart within their chests. GOD FORBID, right? So, when we played outside. And didn't have the answer to every question imaginable at our fingertips, we tended to make up things, scenarios. And it didn't matter whether or not they were FACTUAL, physiological possibility. And if anyone even tried, it sort of fucked the whole picture up,we'd made of it, in our heads. Ruining it for everyone... We, later on learned this was a certain sub-species of human, called "BUZZ-KILLERS" These people eventually got the hint, shut up, and enjoyed the game? Or, sadly, were the reason everyone stared daggers at you, during your party, for inviting them. And they either, had a few drinks and totally changed, somehow. Becoming the LIFE of the party? OR after a few drinks, became even MORE unimaginative. Behaving like a bitter old 7TH grade English TEACHER'S ENOURMOUS RED PEN, running amuck, amongst your party guests, calling out every misspoken word, and tiniest of plot holes, in every dirty joke. Ferociously correcting every slurred word, and before you knew it, became the DEATH of the party. And, if not carefully handled the upcoming Monday morning. Being able to be the best liar in the world, like, "I have ZERO idea, how they heard about it..." Oh my God No!" " Who told them?! I'm kicking their ass when I find them!" (Knowing all the while you won't have to kick anyone's ass,but your own, because YOU invited the Buzz Kill to the party. Your own party! Yeah...So, Believe me, it will make a LOT of difference in your life... It's a movie, not a fucking MENSA meeting, man...So, just sit back and enjoy the show 👍😁

The film was intended to be a sort of suburban fairy tale, so if you view it through that lens it’s easier to suspend your disbelief.

It's called suspension of disbelief. Too much "reality" t.v. made so many people so cynical, poking holes in a film that is CLEARLY fantasy. Why does it matter where he got the ice, dude?

Indeed! I've been saying this to many movie reactors on KZbin. It's a modern fairytale and you should not dissect (any) movie with realism and other irrelevant questions. Enjoy the magic of Tim Burton and experience a movie about life, unconditional love, innocence, and pure of heart.

This is one of those movies, that when I first saw it, I became stunned afterwards. I was around 13 at the time and before watching it I kept whining about us not renting an action movie, which was my thing as a teenager. Almost as soon as it started I was mesmerized and totally immersed into the story of this fairytale. The innocence of Edward, the duplicity and gang mentality of the neighbourhood. Above all the music by Danny Elfman had a profound impact on me. A more beautiful score has never been composed, and never will. As for the Kim/Edward love story it didn't happen overnight. After the initial shock and fear, Kim soon recognizes Edwards innocence and good nature. It is easy to contrast that with Jim's selfishness and evil streak. She realizes that Edward loves her, when he's on the talk show, and an instinct to protect and help him develops, especially after the burglary incident. Kim has sort of the opposite arc of the neighbourhood. The more they start to shun, and despise Edward, the more Kim realizes how good and beautiful a person Edward is (not outwardly of course). Kim starts to develop warm feelings for Edward, and although it might seem a bit rushed to say that she loves him, it didn't ring false with her development as a person.

This is one of the movies where I feel bad that I didn't enjoy it. I just didn't get it, and that's probably me being too analytical. I wanted more time with the characters. Thank-you for your explanation. I sometimes miss the subtleties of romance when watching movies but I can see it now.

Great reaction! Hearing your review reminded me of this bit of trivia: Tom Cruise was originally the top choice for this role, as he was much more in-demand at the time, but Tim Burton said he wouldn't stop asking questions similar to yours - how does he feed himself? How does he use the bathroom? If he's been wearing the same clothes all these years, why doesn't he stink? If he's a machine, wouldn't the ice rust his scissors? Etc. So Burton hired Johnny Depp, because Depp understood that it was a magical fairy tale allegory about how society treats outsiders, not a story about a man with scissors for hands whose "reality" you were supposed to question too deeply. I totally get why people would ask those questions, but I think from the moment you see the technicolor neighborhood with the dark castle overlooking it, you're supposed to understand that this is a stylized interpretation of realty rather than reality itself. Like Roxanne, or The Hudsucker Proxy, or The House Bunny, it exists slightly to the side of "real". But when she said, "I love you," I said the same thing when I first saw it. "Since when?" Lol. Now I think its a symbolic reaction to pure love - something she'd never seen or felt before. Anyway, thanks for the watch, can't wait to see whatever's next! Happy Holidays!

This movie tends to make me feel sad, but it's really great! I actually recently got a Edward Scissorhands Funko Pop for Christmas 🎄 I always feel like Edward represents me, and the neighborhood represents society. Eventually I'm cast out by being so "different"🥺

Yikes. This is a really rough reaction. Maybe once you experience more movies and get used to things you'll understand how there are all kinds of different movies and genres. There are action, fantasy, fairytale, surreal, supernatural etc movies and they all should evoke different reactions and are meant to be interpreted differently. Like others have said, this is a fairytale and is meant to be taken with a sense of suspension of disbelief. It's not reality and isn't meant to be completely literal. Also, you don't seem to comprehend or recognize subtly at all. Highlighted by your "since when" comment after Kim tells Edward she loves him. Her feelings for Edward are very clearly building and being shown for the second half or last third of the film. Again, perhaps after you've experienced movies for a while and have really taken them in, you will start to grasp all this stuff. It's a shame cuz as a kid you would probably get it. But you're older now and think you know about stuff so you kind of have to un learn things.

Edward doesn't age because he is an artificial intelligence robot with human-like appearance and emotions, that was transformed from an assembly line machine, created by a reclusive elderly inventor. The inventor educated Edward to speak, taught Edward etiquette, and read poetry to Edward. The inventor died as he was about to finish transforming Edward from machine into AI robot, so Edward still has the machine blades instead of hands. Does everything have to be shown or it's called a "major plot hole"? Just because the movie doesn't show ice being delivered? Are ice sculptures really the plot of the movie? The movie doesn't show anybody bathing and using a toilet, either, that doesn't mean it didn't happen.
