Disney, Sony and other movie studios can not afford to keep going the woke girl boss way no matter what the cost, just because it supposedly helps their films look progressive and inoffensive. If their movies' writers and producers are much too shallow to be good at writing characters that can be described or remembered in any other distinct or unique way, woke girl bosses mean less than nothing to their bottom line in the end. That is why The Marvels, Echo and now Madame Web got countless review bombs for a month after their initial release date.

To be fair, it seems like people like franchises, reboots, remakes, sequels. There have been good movies in the past year or so-Megan, Past Lives, Sisu, Killers of the Flower Moon, Fall, Smile, Bones and All, Beekeeper, etc. In my experience, when people say they go to the movies, they have a certain kind of movie in mind. Those kinds of movies-Transformers, Marvel movies, maybe recognizable action or slasher and the like-have been beaten to death. Studios rode on their coat tails too much and started churning out crap.

The failure of theaters and overall decline of western pop culture. Is due to talentless modern activist writers. For some reason every movie is 3 hours long and they can’t tell a good story. If you go back and watch movies from the 90s and early 2000s you will notice they got a lot more done in 90 min. Also the obsession with sequels and needing to kick start a franchise “universe”. Instead of focusing on the one singular project.look at any successful franchise it started with one solid film. Now every film spends more time setting things up for sequels than moving the current story forward.

People typically will see movies that are highly anticipated blockbuster films where you can't get the same experience at home as you can on the big screen. You wish to immerse yourself in the movie which is often difficult to do at home. That of course is assuming you don't have any distractions from other movie goers.

Yeah good point. Nowadays it's affordable to have your own big screen home theater system. You can get 70-80 inch TV so it's pretty big screen and you can add a nice sound system about $200 so with TV say 1500 you've got a decent system. Movies go to rental pretty quick so it's cheaper and more comfortable to watch at home. So it doesn't make sense to go to cinema unless it's an event movie.

It's the movie theaters fault for being so damn expensive. The prices for a bag of popcorn and a soda are ridiculous. Going to the movies has never been one of my favorite things but when I was a teenager and in my twenties I used to love to go to the movies on dates but I always preferred the drive-in theater and I hate that most of them closed up. I preferred the drive-in because you were in the comfort of your own vehicle and you got three movies and a cartoon for the price of one movie at the theater.

From reading the comments, I think it's the price of going to the theater that is keeping people away, and this is scary because going to the movies used to be a somewhat accessible activity for people to do, and was a way for people to come together and have a shared experience. We are losing our shared spaces; our third places. What happens when it is just too expensive to go anywhere? I would say as far as streaming being the death of movie theaters, you also had the lead up into streaming, which was everyone upgrading their televisions into "home theater" setups. When everyone has a big screen high resolution TV now that has wide screen aspect ratio, you then have to ask what is *really* that different about seeing it on the "big screen" at the theater. My final point: you have to drive to the movie theater in many cases. Cars are expensive. Better more walkable/ bikable cities with better transit would put more money in people's pockets and places such as movie theaters within accessible reach of a wider public, but our suburban landscapes are designed for individualistic isolation, and when you design for that, that is what you get.
@totoroben
@totoroben 5 ай бұрын
@Simple-xo1jj I think the "woke agenda" idea may be a player here in turning audience away who disagree with it, or feel like it is too preachy, but I don't think this plays into the demise of the theater experience as other factors, such as being broke, having better viewing setups at home, and just having to make the special trip to a theater which is more of an inconvenience, unless you have cabin fever and need to get out. It's been a few weeks since I watched this video but the evolution of movies has been moving towards bigger budget spectacle, and this in turn raises audience expectation and also trying to capture a wide audience. Lucky for you, there are many smaller independent studios out there that release movies that take more risks and are less "woke" but for those you may need to find a smaller artsy cinema willing to screen it, or find it on DVD/ online rental.

The high budgets, imo, are a symptom of death spiral of cinema. Executives and actors starting to realize the time is up and trying to grab the biggest bag of their lives in one go. And the death of cinema is a symptom of them losing monopoly on entertainment, at least that's the biggest reason. Tiktoks and social media have an upper hand now as they take advantage of short attention spans while also molding people to have even more limited power to concentrate. The fact that many actors decided to give political commentary in such a divisive era wasn't a good move either. We don't love them for them. We love them for who WE perceive them to be. The last thing they want to do is overshare and lecture the audience.

You said the new Minions movie would probably hit $1B but later said Deadpool 3 is the only billion dollar movie this year. (I'm looking forward to DP 3 but I don't see it making $1B; Minions will because families are starved.) Movie theaters are charging more because their costs keep going up, but that's the same everywhere. They're bringing in concert films, live sports, limited re-releases of classics -- I think they've got a good revenue stream, but it will cost money. To me, the bigger issue is that the experience at theaters is not _consistently_ good enough to justify the cost: things are dirty, staff are aloof (or outright rude), and other movie goers are jerks. If they can make the experience at theaters better, folks will always spend the money.

Sitting in a room full of people, being unable to leave for essentials like a bathroom break or food/drink without missing half the film, not being able to pause/rewind/fast forward is another reason to stay home and enjoy. No you don’t get the “big theater” experience but it’s more comfortable and convenient. Plus there’s the price. When movies hit $10 to see l was done with them. Back in the days you went to the movie theater to experience something big you couldn’t get it home. Even if you didn’t like the movie, the big screen and the big sound was worth it. But now average people have a pretty good movie theater right at home. The only reason to go to a movie theater is if you really want to see something before you can see it at home. And with the movies constantly sucking most people will want and watch it in comfort on their 86 inch 8k TV at home. And if it’s not good they can just find something else to put on.

Great experience, but hard to replicate-- it was an ideal convergence of dope, Nicolas Cage goin plumb fuckin loco & havin a climactic chainsaw duel, a enthusiastic Halloween audience, & the affordability of the Revue Theatre on Roncesvalles Avenue... so what am I gonna go see NOW, in 2024?
