Bear McCreary’s score was the still the best part of the movie for me. Rodan with the bongos? Ghidorah with the Heart Sutra (look it up)? He brilliantly nailed the themes of every main kaiju in the movie, and it absolutely sucks that he didn’t get to do Kong’s. Oh, what could’ve been.

It’s ok to want more from a monster movie. The original Japanese godzilla was a social commentary on the effects of the nuclear ww2 attacks and postwar fears and panic. And subsequent movies addressed humanity’s relationship with the environment and animals. It’s ok to ask for more from our movies and see how great it could’ve been if it nailed thematically what the trailer captures; and executes on the production, narrative, dialogue, stunts, choreography, effects, and acting. Elevating our standards is exactly why great art persists through generations. It’s more than pulp entertainment

All things considered Godzilla being written as his own character usually consumed by hatred for humanity for creating him, as well as being an embodiment of nuclear weapons or nature's wrath is where he shines best in my opinion, like in the Cataclysm comics, anime Trilogy or the Heisei era. In that way he feels like a godly beast with intelligence and an unsure place in the world that fears or hates him. To me that is something compelling when he regardless faces any threat that arrives on Earth as its anti-hero protector. On that topic, Im not a fan of how often he is depicted as needing so much saving in the monsterverse movies, it doesn't work in humanizing him it just makes Godzilla look weak when in his best incarnations Godzilla is a lone relentless fighter who stays on his feet and marches on. It worked best in the first movie but only because he was outnumbered and written akin to an aged hero or samurai. Like the Hulk I feel like he's made too weak for plot when you could simply work around that. A Superman-esque aspirational kaiju would be the original Ultraman who believes and admires humanity's potential and noble qualities and wishes to protect them, where he shines is the heartfelt notion that this giant of the stars wished to call the planet home and protect it against monsters who are drawn to it. And then in between we have Gamera, a monster who in his Heisei incarnation depicts a very interesting scenario of the heroic kaiju being seen with hatred and cynicism by humans for his reckless actions, kind of like what BVS and KOTM tried to do but kind of fails to focus on. Gamera in his desperation to fight the Gayos looks like he's grown cold to humans and they in turn attack him when its finally revealed he would still put himself in harms way to save the girl from Iris.

Thats bascially why I loved Shin Godzilla and Singular Point while really disliking GvK It seems like the more flashy the monsterverse gets the more the human characters suffer writing-wise I think Pacific Rim is a good example of a kaiju movie that balances the human characters and kaiju characters well. I have wish no ill will upon those who want an monsters all out attack film though! And I definitely understand the spectacle, I just wish that when they do utilize human characters they are used more than mistaking Ghidorah's name for a gonorrhea joke. (also the Hong Kong battle in Pacific rim is so much better than the Hong Kong battle in GvK)

This reminded me to my experience watching Inside Llewyn Davis by the Coen Brothers... I watched it for the first time at 17 yo and then for a second time at 21 yo. The first time I felt it so depressing. I felt bad afterwards. In a very existencial way. The second time I was laughing my ass off because of the absurdity of the chaos in Llewyn's life. The thing is: That movie is a drama. But it's also pretty sardonic. I love it. I think it has a lot to do with what you've mentioned. It affects how/who you are at that exact moment when you are watching a movie how you'd eventually feel it. And that's why I love movies. I'll watch Cloud Atlas soon. I haven't watched it yet.

The original 2012 comic-con concept trailer for Legendary's Godzilla reboot will always be my favorite. The dark and serious tone matched perfectly with the horrific devastation shown after the events of an unseen monstrous battle. Seeing people as ants, either alive, but scrambling to the peak of a collapsed building to see the scale of the carnage, or as masses of bodies flung from the smashed and mangled mess of a train; it's not something that is this viscerally shown in most Godzilla films. The imagery was shocking, but profund, not to mention the brilliant use of Oppenheimer's speech about the bomb. Unfortunately, I find that this ominous set up was never truly delivered, with 2014 feeling like it came half-way, and the rest of the monsterverse lost the original vision. I enjoy them all still, but I will never stop feeling for the movie that was promised with that one teaser.
@retrovisor

The teaser Introduced a neat idea of Godzilla being shrouded in debris and destruction. A shadowy figure. A silhouette of a walking concrete skyscrapper constantly crumbling down and destroying everything in its path. That's what I got from the Comic Con Teaser. Would've worked great as an american interpretation of destruction on their psyche (Collapse of the Twin Towers on September 11th) What I got in the movie was an inch of that. Not bad, but it was conflicted, mixed in-between a serious look at Godzilla, the monster, and a taste of an expanded universe that was to come. And said expanded universe being the rock that made the franchise trip and fall into the Roland Emmerich nightmare that was Godzilla vs Kong

@@prjoliphant7951 - I'm just so disappointed at how Hollywood just did NOT have an overarching plan for the series. If u went back in time and told me right after seeing 2014 Godzilla that there would be a Mecha-Godzilla down the line I would have stopped watching the series because it's simply not grounded in the reality they achieved in 2014. I mean yeah Godzilla is unrealistic but a mechanized creature able to body him like no one else has before is a severe gtfoh. I hope from now on they have some real Japanese people be in charge of the films.

Trailers allow editors a few minutes to shine, project their creativity and let themselves become enthralled in a world in which they may not have been a part of during filming, but now have the opportunity to stamp their mark on the project. I love movie trailers, theyre little pockets of art that are clearly made with care that are not talked about enough. They arent always just tools to deliver information about whatever they are selling. Being able to make you feel such a specific emotion in such a quick amount of time is so impressive and fascinating to me. They deserve to be studied on their own. People revere the opening of a movie like UP, a quick montage that acts as an introduction and an emotional hook, and many trailers deserve the same respect and admiration. Great video as usual.

Yeah! I almost felt i was tricked when I actually got that game. I was constantly waiting for when the good game that was promised in the trailer would show up. I was in denial that the game kinda sucked for months haha. Its kinda amazing because it is on of the best videogame-trailer of all time, connected to an utter mediocre product. Now I almost feel bad for the developer, because considering the gameplay itself, I sincerely think they wanted to go for a more light tone, but the expectation from the trailer made them make the game less dynamic, "sadder", and ultimately more boring. Without the trailer I really think this game would have been better recieved

Everything you said, about how the trailer shows how a great monster movie should be, leads to the point, that the 2014 Godzilla is still the best out of these, because it captures perfectly the unawareness and brutality of an unknown monster, which from the point of view of us humans you even hardly see in its full scale up close; those camera shot choices of this movie still blew my mind and it buffels me that we now have fcking POV game shots and so on; the first really let us feel how tiny we were and that we could do nothing!

I remember trailers in the early 2000's often building to an audio visual crescendo that would give me chills. If you can elicit an involuntary emotional response in the viewer.. I considered that a job well done. I'd wonder about how intentional and formulated the editors were, when every 0.1 of a second cut at the right spot can make or break it.

I still return to the Battle LA trailer occasionally and am completely enraptured all over again by the very specific emotions it exudes. The melancholic vocoded human voice really fits the tone of bleakness that the raw, desperate images convey, hinting at the humanity that will be lost and mourned if the human race succumbs to the machine invaders without any need for dialogue.

I had the exactly same reaction to the Godzilla trailer and the following feeling of disappointment with the end result. There's a sense of Lovecraftian awe and melancholy at our insignificance in the trailer that film never even seems to attempt. As always your summation and interpretation are spot on and you articulated succinctly what I can not. On a sidenote I seriously recommend the 2016 Japanese film Shin Godzilla. I very distinctly remember the trailer for the 1998 Godzilla movie with the fishermen in the rain. They played the trailer in front of every movie for about a year so I've seen it like 50 times. It was quite impressive with the water bulging and the 2 fins sticking out. You didn't see it but you got the sense that is was huge. The Godzilla in the 2013 movie is actually a lot bigger but in the Emmerich movie the had more shots were you could clearly get a feel for the size like when Hank Azaria ends up between the feet and it passes over. You didn't have stuff like that in the 2013 movie.

Not movie trailers, but the Halo trailers are some of the most legendary pieces of media I have ever seen. ESPECIALLY the live action promotional they made for the games 3, ODST, and Reach. The games can sometimes be inextinguishable from a mindless shooter, but the trailers and promotional short films do so much to remind us of the emotional aspect and the tone of the games. For Halo 3 they made a FAKE documentary series about UNSC veterans recalling the war with the covenant and remembering the Master Chief like a war hero that invokes the imagery of world war 2 and reminds us of the human element of a war that pushed humanity to its last planet. Then you are like "My god, this isn't just a shooter with a giant robot with a machine gun, these are human beings fighting an impossible conflict against alien monsters twice their size and with superior technology. These people are being slaughtered and entire planets are being glassed." Halo music can still make me cry, it's a futuristic epic. Following Master Chief in Halo is much like following the epic story of Achilles.

I've seen the first film countless times, I love the way it's a monster movie but also a movie about family, about conspiracy - and by the end, a story on the powerlessness of man in the face of higher forces of nature. Nothing the humans do (and they do a lot) has any positive effect, the humans are essentially passive, little ants running about while the giants do their thing. And they do it all without being boring. Godzilla KOTM loses the soul the first film had and injected it with cheese and cliche. I didn't even finish Godzilla vs Kong, but I really liked Skull Island. Gareth Edwards was given the first Godzilla film off the back of his film "Monsters", another film with a human story at its core, and that's the problem with most sequels, they often lose the emotional/human story and only carry over the action. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

@@prjoliphant7951 sorry for forming an opinion my guy. I don't really care for monster movies where its just monsters fighting with no human story, reminds me of power rangers, which is maybe why I prefer the original. It didn't feel cheesy with some underground terrorist plot like the sequel. For a fantasy it felt real, a freak of nature that the humans can not deal with. 2nd film felt cheesy and forced, and GVK bored me. As I say it wasn't a monster movie it was a story of conspiracy, of family, loss, and powerlessness against the forces of nature. The other 2 films just felt like a studio trying to make cash. That's my opinion though, and you're allowed to like the sequels if you love monster films with lots of fighting and destruction.

@@prjoliphant7951 remember I'm not a godzilla fan and I don't follow the lore so Ghidorah is just a monster to me I have no idea what it represents. The monster bits were cool in the 2nd film with the big thing flying over the city flattening it like a nuke. I just found the human story to be stereotypically cheesy, the humans in the first film just felt like normal people. A guy who's lost his wife and believes there's a conspiracy, a soldier trying to get home then save home with very little success, his family being the stakes and what he's fighting for. It's all very grounded and relatable. I can empathise more with a guy trying to protect his family than I can a terrorist trying to destroy the world. Again it's my opinion and you're allowed to prefer the sequels if you want.

Great video man, you are on point. One of the worst offenders of all the things you say has to be the mcu: false advertising, scenes that are not in the actual movie and downright lying about the tone. I still remember how i felt by the way we were SCAMMED by the Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron and Endgame trailers just to mention a few. Once again you hit all my soft spots, from Godzilla to Metal Gear. One interesting aspect is that Game trailers seem to be more advanced in regards to spoilers and capturing emotion but that might just be me. You can observe a lot of trailer edit traditions jump over from one medium to the other, yet game trailers almost never need to rely on "moneyshots" past the first act. Lasty, props to your editing skills and ability to evoke emotion. I still can't get through the Bladerunner essay without breaking into tears. Keep on keeping on, hope Kojima sees this ;)

This is a great concept for the video talking about the significance of a movie trailer, or any trailer of a media project as a matter of fact. I often don't watch the trailers of a newly announced movie, rather I read their available synopsis, if there is, and I always, ALWAYS watch only one promotional material of any movie after what I did with Doctor Strange 2. I watched all, LITERALLY ALL THE PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS AVAILABLE on the internet (as I was working on a video) that when I sat down in the theatres to watch it, I felt like I've already watched 80% of the movie. I'm not kidding, really 80%. So far, the trailer for Avatar 2 has moved me, a lot. Its music is ethereal, Tom. It's just beautiful. When it was launched, not only I, but my whole family watched it on the TV. I just fell in awe with its beauty, and I wish the movie will elevate the emotional essence much much more. In video games tho, I guess it was Dying Light 2, or some other zombie game that excited me a lot as it first featured a man jogging casually amidst the zombies rampage in the city with a backdrop of a catchy music, and turns out, the man himself is a zombie.
