I'd like to add some things I noticed while rewatching the movie: 1. Just before the "We Know The Way" scene, when Moana finds the ships behind the waterfall, you can see the sail design on the biggest "mothership." It has a big ship followed by smaller ships, leaving a smaller island to head to a bigger island, representing their journey. In the cave, the boats had reached the island. During the song "We Know The Way," you can see the same boat, but with the sail design a little different. The boats had left the first island, but had not reached the second. They were halfway through their journey. 2. When Moana's grandmother was dying, the last thing she said was "Go." As she said this, the camera panned up to the tapestry behind her, where Maui can be seen. But just below him, right above the grandmother's head, is a stingray, the very sea creature that she came back as.

Thanks for including Tagalog Mythology, I always wonder if they had the grandmother's name "Tala" to one of our Mythology Goddesses. Which now prove I'm right.. I love Grandma Tala, she's one of the best characters in Moana, she guided Moana even when she was gone... People called her the crazy old lady, But I think there's a reason as to why she influenced Moana to go beyond the rift and let Moana knew about the past of Motunui, which was that they were Voyagers. Aside from Moana, it's possible that grandma Tala was also the other chosen one to put back the heart of Tefiti, just think about it, she knew about the stone (heart of Tefiti) way before Moana was chosen, which other old people in the village believed was just a myth, she insisted it's real, she saw when the ocean chose Moana, she kept the stone which if Moana really is the chosen one, would the Ocean let Grandma have the stone if they only choose Moana as the keeper? I think the Ocean also chose Grandma Tala to be Moana's Guide considering her name was Tala, it's fitting coz Voyagers used Stars for direction when sailing at night, and what's the job of Grandma Tala? yes, she guided Moana through her journey...

Also, Hei hei literally means Chicken in Maori, although I'm not sure whether Maori culture was included in the inspiration for Moana, but they obviously used many Pacific cultures and backgrounds. Oh also, just here to say, Maori is pronounced Mah-oh-ri, not May-ore-ee. Of course, in New Zealand, people have heaps of different pronounciations, but definitely not one as strange as that. Ok also, Tagalog isn't emphasized ta-GA-log, it's usually said like TA-ga-log, from what I've heard.

Maui is from Hawaiian Lore. His hook is from Maori Lore. The basic movie reference is Hawaiian history, in 1974 a white dude went to the Melanesian Islands to learn how to sail the old way and re-taught the Hawaiians. It's now called Hokulea run by University of Hawaii......having said this, her Dad can't be named Tui unless he is Samoan, Tongan, etc. The Hawaiians do not have a T in their language..........Tafiti is the Islad misses from Tahitian Lore. Just wish each culture got notice instead of just saying Polynesian.
