'I MADE A MISTAKE! I made a mistake...' After hearing the most intelligent squad member, a guy who could always justify his actions admit that he was wrong about the one thing that defined him, the one thing that made him a hero at the time, for that man to say that... I couldn't shoot him in the back as he tried to correct that mistake. No matter what was offered.

There's a strong bit of symbolism that's easy to miss. Should you betray Mordin and kill him, you shoot him with a Carnifex pistol, the same type of gun Mordin gives you in ME2 as a gesture of goodwill.

I didn't notice that. That makes it worse i just couldn't do it even when i was playing ren shep
@TomZanovich11 жыл бұрын
Wrong. I bought the super Carnifex pistol from the Spectre Terminal in the Citadel and shot the alien with that pistol, not a average Mass Effect. I do think the dev just used the Carnifex model because it open in a badass way, and added to the drama.
@Enigman6410 жыл бұрын
TomZanovich It's in Mass Effect 2. You leave the clinic and Mordin hands you the Carnifex as a "bonus in good faith." Even if you have a different pistol equipped, it shows the Carnifex because of this symbolism, unlike in other cutscenes where it's usually the Predator.

They made it the same exact gun that he gives you in Me2, if nobody noticed. It's such a sad scene, and so many things could happen in just this one moment. Hurt, betrayal of trust, murder, so much. And the music allows us to feel every single emotion, if we open up to it. I think most of us can agree that the music composed for Mass Effect does its job.

Shooting down a loyal comrade-in-arms is callous enough, but using his sacrifice to foil not only his sole hope of redemption but the dreams of a neutered nation takes cruel to a sociopathic level. In one premeditated move, Shepard the lying rat condemns Mordin to infamy, Wrex to futile death, and billions to stillbirth.
@netspirit798 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's what I did. I prevented another Krogan Rebellion by preserving the genophage, killed the Rachni queen, which saved the galaxy. Mordin was just one Salarian that I did not particularly like anyway - definitely not enough to sacrifice the galaxy for keeping the idiot alive.
@PredatorAlienate8 жыл бұрын
+netspirit79 A Krogan population explosion would not necessarily have led to another rebellion. Not if the Krogan were given more constructive outlets for their aggressive impulses. There would always be demand for a legion of biological control agents somewhere in a civilization that spanned the Galaxy.

This is Patrick Weekes for you, friend. (the creator of Mordin and his storyline. He also created another big tragedy, which is Solas in DA. He's going to be the leading writer in DA4 and from what I've seen on Twitter, he's cooperatives are calling him dick already, after hearing his ideas for the sequel. That makes me think he's most likely coming with something magnificently dickish this time if people who know him for years are still shocked...)
@PredatorAlienate8 жыл бұрын
Hekate Bleble Then, it is Weekes the Tragedian whom I have to thank. Yes, the theme linking ME Solas to DA Solas goes far beyond an eponymous clue. Both characters fear their own legacies, for both feel remorse over their SOULLESS deeds. When the Inquisitor's heir comes to sit in judgment of DA Solas, I hope Mr. Weekes will give the Player a real choice in deciding his fate. Otherwise, ugh....
@hekatebleble48008 жыл бұрын
I'm almost certain we'll get some choice. Players are strongly polarized about him and the devs are aware of that. For me it only means more drama because I support Solas and I'm going to see him suffer one way or another :|

Mordin was the very first crew member I lost in the entire series (excluding the forced loss of Ashley or Kaidan). This was the first time in the entire series where it really struck me that the end was really coming. It was real. I lost a beloved character, even if he chose to sacrifice himself to mend his error. I struggled to get over it for weeks. Then others like Legion soon followed; the moment I thought I had lost Grunt put me on an emotional roller coaster; and the farewell video messages to other characters near the game's end made it clear that I was not living past these upcoming events. Bravo Bioware. I loved every single character I met in the universe you created. Sincerely -a fan.

You can talk Mordin into agreeing with you in sabotaging the genophage, and he won't go up the elevator at all and *will* live. But you *have* to destroy Maelon's data in the second game and kill Wrex in the first to convince Mordin that Wreav is a maniac that will start the krogan rebellions all over again. Mordin will actually side with you and agree to help work on the Crucible. I got to talk to him on the comm in London before the big final push to the beam. It was cool as hell to have that last talk with him. I was renegade as hell in that playthrough, though. Basically to get Mordin to live, you have to get a bunch of other people killed. In the talk with Garrus later, and if Shepard admits the truth to him, Garrus calls Mordin a "devious little salarian" for being able to fool everyone into thinking he died up at the tower.

When you think about it, Renegade Shepard is the worst war criminal in history. Hitler committed genocide? Renegade Shepard committed at least 3 genocides throughout the story, he executed unarmed prisoners in cold blood, he betrayed some of his best friends, he left the Council to die, he ended hostage negotiations by often shooting the hostage, he actively worked with, aided and at the time, endorsed a brutal terrorist organization and all in all, his actions probably ended up greatly sabotaging and hindering the allied war effort far more than Cerberus could wish.
@HH-cm5rp9 жыл бұрын
***** but he did it for the greater good, most of the time. He killed the first Rachni queen because he didn't want to provoke a terrible war; same with the Krogan. He let the Council die because he wanted to be sure that Sovereign would be destroy. He fought side by side with the Illlusive Man because the precious concil you saved was a bunch of assholes who was drinking champagne when humans colonies were entirely decimated. He didn't negociated with terrorists and, in sacrificing the hostages, he saved many life in the future. So yeah, it's hard sometimes to make the good, but I prefer killing 500 000 of humans to save 5 000 000 than trying to save everyone and become an extinct species.

You know, this is one of many, MANY, *MANY* points in the series that made me rethink what it means to be a Renegade. In a lot of other RPGs, you'll get Good vs Evil choices, and when I first played ME1, I thought "Renegade choices" were just meant to be "the bad guy" choices. At first, I was surprised to be proven wrong....at FIRST. What I thought was going to be "evil" was just "pragmatic" and no nonsense. Captured an enemy soldier? You can sweet-talk him into giving enemy intel, OR beat him within an inch of his life to save time, which can be used to save OTHER lives. BOTH had some appeal from an ethical and practical standpoint. But there were choices.....that REALLY sold that idea that the renegade Shepard is an utter bastard. Moments that made me think "No, this could have been handled better. You gained NOTHING of worth doing things this way. The world is worse-off because of what you did. This was a bad move in both the long and short term". Shooting Mordin in the back? Betraying an entire race and their hopes/dreams? THIS is the one point where a good person would have said "no", pragmatic or not.

Like Mordin said in the second games, they could've done something about it but they didn't, their planet was just horrible and they are just too dangerous, once the war will be over, they will probably have a revenge against the galarians. Liked Mordin and Wrex but I couldn't take that risk Don't get me wrong, I like the krogans and I think that what the galarians did to them is comparable to a " crime against a species " because they never got to develop themselves since the galaraisn brought them weapons. I think that their story is a huge tragedy :(
@DaOS15911 жыл бұрын
eclairdavid81 Yes, but with Wrex and Bakara/Eve alive they will change the Krogans! Even Mordin believe that the Krogan can yes work together with the rest! What happen in the Krogan Rebellion was a mistake, like the morning war with the Quarian/Geth, The Quarian was wrong, and the Krogan was wrong! but you really believe that a "genocide" to a entire race gonna fix it? PS: It's Salarian ;P
@eclairdavid8111 жыл бұрын
Daan OS Some krogans are good, yeah but I doubt that they are good enough to stop an entire ( violent ) race from wanting their vengeance. It could work but from what I saw in the game, there is a also a risk that this could lead to a future war. And it's not a genocide, the salarians only reduced the number of child they could have so it's impossible for them to be dangerous in the future but their race is still alive

This scene is so powerful because the trigger on the controller is like the trigger on Shepard's gun. Think about it like that next time you play this part, it is SOOO much harder to pull the trigger if you think of it as shooting a friend in real life

This story path was very Breaking Bad like in its feel of tragedy. With Renegade Commander Shepard being anti-krogan, you knew shit would hit the fan eventually, but even when this happens, the impact hits you hard.

I'm sorry Mordin. I wish there was another way. A lot of hard choices for both us brought us here . Goodbye my friend........."squeezes trigger"........ Shepherd drops gun that Mordin gave him, put on his helmet so the other squad members cannot see his pained expression .

whymustithinkofaname The Salarian Councilor is not the Dalatrass, no. Still kind of a douche though, like most politicians in Mass Effect. (Notable exceptions being Anderson if he's chosen as councilor, and the elcor ambassador in the first game)
@whymustithinkofaname9 жыл бұрын
TheRadPlayer The first salarian councilor - Valern - in the first game isn't too bad if you keep him alive until the third game, just all the female salarians are douches.

I did this, only because I thought I needed the Salarians help. I was wrong. I went back quickly, and re did this. I don't care if its a video game, I couldn't live with myself after taking Mordin's life.

This choice is easy to make when Wrex is gone, eve is gone as is the data, and you're left with that krogan bully Wreav. But I always make sure to convince Mordin the correct way. Some things are just too morally horrifying

that moment when you realise that shepard shot mordin with the gun that mordin gave him / her on omega when they first met
@TriniKnight0112 жыл бұрын
Exactly. One of the major points of the game since ME 2 - from the subplot with EDI down to the controversial ending - was that life is about having intellect, desires, emotions etc, regardless of where it came from. If after all that a guy's only justification for killing the geth is that they aren't organic, something is seriously missing.

Mordin is the most fragile member of the team, completing his loyalty mission increases his survivability, as it does with all characters. So without the boost from the loyalty mission Mordin is so fragile death is almost assured.

I once completely committed on a full renegade play through, promising myself to never hesitate once as much as I hate it, so I lost a lot of squadmates during this time. But I pulled the trigger on Mordin I was absolutely destroyed. I didn't touch the game for months afterwards because I felt so bad about it
