The extent to which Del Toro´s Hellboy films have been discarded by pop culture is a real shame, ´cuase those were really fun, imaginative and had a lot of heart. Auteur superhero filmmaking at its finest.

So, Really That Good for Hellboy in the works after Star Wars? Or maybe a Good Enough Movie?
@BobLogical
@BobLogical 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely closer to GEM territory. They're good movies but they have a lot of problems. I don't think we (as in, the people who still remember them) would care so much if it weren't for the great effects work and the absolute perfect translation from page to screen that was Ron Perlman's Hellboy.

@@BobLogical, no, they definitely are good movies, not "good enough". And saying that people would not care for them if it weren't for visual effects and charismatic lead is like saying that people would not care for Star Wars if there were no visual effects and charismatic heroes. That's the movie, genius.
@BobLogical

@@MachineFuckingHate Simmer down, champ. Del Toro doesn't need you to defend the honor of two movies he's largely moved on from, both of which are solid B+ efforts bogged down by things like an extraneous and uninteresting audience surrogate viewpoint character dropped most of the way through the film (first one) or a tropey and cliche-ridden romance subplot that eats up way more of the runtime than you remember (second one).

I had a fun time watching this movie. I'm not at all surprised that critics are all coming down hard on it, but as a viewer my experience was very different. The movie was a pile of fun stuff to watch, I liked the cast, and didn't think the visual effects were even close to as bad as Bob makes them sound. I feel like a lot of people who would have a good time with this movie are going to skip it because of the reviews and I'm very glad I didn't.

It's a shame on how the movie turned out like it did. Practically nothing could top the Ron Perlman movies, but I was willing to give this a shot and view it for cheesy shlocky fun, I especially appreciated the addition of R-rating, but like with AVP: Requiem and A Good Day to Die Hard, not everything can be solved through F-Bombs and gore.

I'll say Hellboy 2 was an underappreciated gem that actually got the energy it desperately needed in comparison to the first installment. Hellboy 1 was... really not. Ron Perlman was of course fantastic, but the movie as a whole and especially deciding it should star Agent Toast brought down the entire movie. Of the four Hellboy movies we got before this new one, even the good live action one was firmly number three, while I found Heart of Iron and Sword of Storms to be way better. Though honestly, a lot of the animated superhero movies got a raw deal. I still consider Mask of the Phantasm and Under the Red Hood to be the best Batman movies, and Superman vs the Elite is my favorite Superman thing ever.

However, the less said about *HBAnimated: Blood and Iron,* the better. Sweet Threepwood's beard, now *that* was an incomprehesible mess!

Also totally caught and "end credits" scene accidentally just by sticking around to get my Dad's opinion on the thing and ask him where he wanted yo grab lunch... I guess they are banking in this becoming sequalized which is unfortunate for the people involved. If they do get a second crack I hope it sticks a landing even if it isn't perfect.

I had a bad feeling since the photo of David Harbour looking like a cosplayer of Del Toro's Hellboy. It was the first red flag that they weren't trying and wanted to play it safe by sticking to the already popular adaptation of Hellbot instead of trying something new. I would've made the film to look like Sin City and Hellboy to be slimmer with yellow eyes without irises, just more faithful to the comic and the Sin City-like tones would have helped people accept the R rating more. Or even fucking better: make Hellboy a super stylish animated film like Into the Spider-Verse but for adults. Then again, only Japan dares to make animated films for older audiences, America is still "animation is for kids or gross out humor" mindset

I read the short story ‘BPRD casualties ‘ as a kid and it’s always stuck with me. Then I heard about Dog soldiers from Neil marsh. And the way he can make his characters confront horror with out cheapening it’s effect as an the antagonist of story is perfect for the BPRD and early hellboy. Later hellboy has a lot more dream logic and mythology and I don’t think that is something he could do. But that style of story telling would be really hard for anyone to convey. And I think the other side of the Mignola-Verse. That blue collar melancholy attitude to unspeakable horror is something he could of done perfectly. Which is my main problem with del toro films. Everything seams like a joke. The characters are immature and there no gravity to those films. That’s why I was really happy when they. Decided to reboot hellboy and I. Was happy Neil was directing it. And I feel awful that the producers cut into his vision. Especially since it’s obvious they were going for a more comic based adaptation. Mike and del toro are friends. Mike had limited involvement on the first movie as del toro has already a huge fan of the comics but he wasn’t really interested in making ‘hellboy’ he wanted to do his own interpretation of the movie, which is fine just not what I want. And mike had a lot more involvement in this movie and him Neil and David Harbor really seamed like they wanted to bring the comics to life. I dont think we are ever going to get a better shot at a real faithful hellboy adaptation and I’m just really sad because hellboy is my favourite Character ever. And I just want other people to know how cool he is too.

Damn I actually liked it, I thought it was a more depressive change of pace from the Del Toro movies in a way. Though I did make the EXACT same comparison to Buckaroo Banzai, I just didn't see that as necessarily a knock on the film as much as a knock on its overall accessibility to general audiences. The way I saw it was more like a live-action bigger budget version of one of those direct-to-video animated comicbook movies

As someone who got into the comics after watching the original two, this makes me very sad... kinda hoped this would lead to some sort of small scale Mignolaverse.

I'll admit I didn't like the Hellboy/Liz romance from the Del Toro version, but Del Toro knows his monster movies, and it sounds like this version didn't share his enthusiasm. I watched the behind the scenes features, and he was in his element, this was his jam.

You need to trim the end of this video. There is 1 minutes 45 seconds of black screen starting at 4:58

Shame this turned out to be terrible. I don't have any attachment to the Hellboy property but I was kinda hoping this thing would be good just because Daniel Dae Kim's in it and I think he should be in more things just in general

I gotta admit, even though I wanted Hellboy three just as much as anyone, this failure really upset me. I was rooting for every single person on this team. The director was good, the writers were good, the actors were good. And then the execs decided to stick their noses into this.

Honestly, I am not hearing anything too terrible, an uninspired script a reason not to rush out to see it, not a reason to avoid it like the plague. Still I only have so much money to spend on luxuries after tax season so gonna wait for this one to come out on Netflix.

I really wish we could get your and a few other people's reviews of movies about a month before the movie comes out... It would help save me money on tickets. Oh well, maybe I'll like something about it anyway. It's happened before.

I hold no grudge against David Harbour for this. He's done other work which is outstanding and no-one had a 100% perfect track record. Now, this is the perfect time to right a huge wrong and greenlight Hellboy 3.

Whoever edited this movie should go to the same summer school remedial editing course as the Fantastic Four (2015) movie staff should have attended. This movie was more choppy than all the waves in The Perfect Storm. That being said I was entertained (admittedly partially due to my "bargain-priced" $9 ticket cost), but I cannot recommend this film at "retail-price". Sad, there wasn't even a Ron Perlman cameo.
