I don't know why Hugh Jackman didn't have other famous roles but he's a great live performer and singer alongside being a good actor. The prestige was good

You bring up an interesting point in how this R-rated movie will be something for young girls seeing a young girl being a straight-up badass, giving them a sense of empowerment. I remember when The Passion of the Christ, an R-rated movie, came out back 2004 and our religion class teacher was trying to be ethtical to see a Christian movie about Jesus that is otherwise violent as fuck except it was basically torture porn. Unlike Batman v Superman, Logan is a depressing R-rated movie done right because it was honest with itself and wasn't trying to make toys or nor was it grim for the sake of it. e.g. Superman letting people die a flaming exploding death in a courthouse with echoing screams.

I feel sorry for whoever has to play Wolverine after Hugh Jackman. Those are some big shoes to fill. I mean, the guy has played the character in 9 movies over a 17 year period, and no matter how good or bad the movies were he was always great. It's great to see his run as the character end on a high note. And I am so happy to finally see a live action version of X-23.

"Inevitably finds its way back to Marvel ?" You know those old jagged rusty barbed wire fence poles you see in fields ? Most Hollywood executives would not even hesitate to repeatedly smash their own faces into them if it prevented Marvel from making even one extra cent with the X-Men franchise.

its going to happen He was what kept it going and there is the thing NONE of the other x men movies were as good as first class and they botched that sequal and this is a good way to just end and here is the thing THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD END. Fox needs to realize something trying to run movie about your competetors universe that are not even in that universe is point -your going to make money but not in the amounts you could if you for example stopped making the movies and focused on your own, there is a limit even to how many movies fox makes each year and here is the thing if they funneled that into making dc movies they could catch up to marvel in what they really need world building, they are rushing and trying to do what marvel did in one or two movies the reason avengers works is all the characters they are all developed iron man had 2 movies everyone else had one movie and here is the thing they don't have to go through their own character development as their developed and the avenger movies lead to just more growth and story telling -it would be like if they tried to ram all 3 lord of the rings movies into one 2 hr movie its not do able without killing the character development and thats the problem. If they want to make their properties better they need to make more movies about them stop making the marvel ones and in fact sell them back to marvel you will get some money and get things for say a flash or other such movie going. then again they have failed to realize that simply by using the already developed tv show flash they could have saved themselves a ton of time. look i just feel that they have made several major screw ups in this and that the dc eu is better with their tv shows then the movies they make which so far have been bad.

In my mind, the beauty of this film is that it makes clear the real cost of a civil rights struggle: people die and are left in unmarked graves. But the sacrifices in the movie actually do count for something, so it is ultimately bittersweet. I had gutpunch after gutpunch in this movie, but I was never disappointed.

I also enjoyed the meta narrative in the movie: Logan wants nothing to do with wolverine or the xmen, people keep making him be wolverine despite him not wanting to be, the asshole bad guy being a big fan of wolverine, and of course (massive spoilers) a younger version of wolverine being what kills him.

I've always had a soft spot for the X-Men movies; The first movie was alright X2 was pretty good The Last Stand, while not great, has a few decent moments Origins: Wolverine was a garbage fire, but at least we had an awesome tie-in game out of it First Class was a definite step up The Wolverine was pretty entertaining Days of Future Past was even better Deadpool was amazing and I want a sequel of Apocalypse, while disappointing, at least it's better than The Last Stand I kinda wanna see Logan. It looks awesome.

I don't know why people keep saying this. Yes it has a cantankerous violent older man take in a young girl under his wing as a sort of daughter, but that's it. This movie is about finding his sense of family. The Last of Us subverts that trope entirely. Laura is a girl raised in violence and he hopes she can do better than him, while Ellie is non-violent from the start and becomes horrified by Joel's casual violence.

It was alright, but go watch it again right now; doesn't hold up. Opinions being subjective and all that, but for a lot of people (including myself and apparently Bob) the X-Men movies just can't compete. We can go re-watch a decade old movie in the MCU and it is still legitimately GOOD, while going back to an X-Men movie the same age just get an "eh, I can see why I liked it when I was younger." People's tastes change with time, and the X films have always been about scrapping the comic stuff in favor of this washed out "realistic" tone as a way of chasing the "mature" comic fans. Just like the Dark Knight trilogy did. And yeah, that's awesome if you're still in that transitional phase when you don't understand what maturity actually is. But when you get a bit older and look back you see just how absurd and at time downright silly these movies are. Movies like X2, Days of Future Past, and even the Dark Knight are adolescent movies; that awkward phase when you think you're hot shit because you managed to get away with a little bit of profanity, and all your buddies call you a badass because of that trendy leather jacket. But ten years down the line you look back at yourself and think "god I was such a dork back then."
@LukeLovesRose

LOL. Your standards are really LOW if you think MCU movies are timeless. You clearly don't give two shits about cinematic art. DOFP knocks the shit out of every MCU movie in terms of cinematography.
@wilhelmcooning
@wilhelmcooning 7 жыл бұрын
But I like that they're silly! They've got this fun faux serious campness to them. They're so over the top... Like when the truck flips in The Dark Knight, or that ridiculous assassination attempt at the beginning of X2. Sure, it ain't exactly The Godfather, but not everything has to be high art to be enjoyable. And I'm just as much a dork now as I was 10 years ago :) I ain't seen Days of Future Past so I can't judge that one, but I feel X2 and Dark Knight are good for reasons that are very different to why the Marvel films are good. There's enough room in the world for both!
@iansmart4158
@iansmart4158 7 жыл бұрын
There is nothing good about the first captain America film and Ant Man. They're both BAD. and Will X, kudos for sticking to your guns. Like what you like. If someone tells you that your taste is "adolescent" then they're definitely not adult enough to understand opinion isn't fact. I'd say having films that don't acknowledge death, the world, or actual people the way Marvel movies do is immature. I'm not saying one needs to be "REAL" and "GRITTY" but those X movies do what some of the best X books do. Examine how the X-Men's cosmic adventures are meant to reflect the nature of how people can feel about their disenfranchised situations. Books like the Days of Future Past, Dark Phoenix saga, or Wolverine (in Japan) stories are as much about self discovery, relationship straining, and fear of an uncertain future as any of those X-Movies are. Not liking them is fine, but saying they don't inhabit the real spirit of the comics (like Raimi's spiderman did) instead of just adapting them is false. Don't mean to attack you dude, just getting my feelings out. Have a nice day.

Here's my analysis of all the X-Men movies X-Men: alright X-Men 2: great X-Men 3: pretty mediocre, but not outright terrible X-Men Origins: big hot pile of shit First Class: really good The Wolverine: pretty good Days of Future Past: not perfect, but still good Deadpool: fantastic Apocalypse: meh Logan: fantastic The X-Men franchise is a huge mixed bag, but generally I would say there's way more good than bad and I disagree with your assertion that only two of them are any good. I respect your opinion, but I don't like how you assume everyone agrees with you, when movies like X-2 and Days of Future Past are held in pretty high regard

X-Force will be either Deadpool 3 or a team up like Avengers, and they are gearing up to make New Mutants, plus Channing Tatum's Gambit movie will probably get made eventually. I think SOMEONE at Fox has realised this variety of small, character (and creator) focused movies is better than churning out a shitty X-men film every 3-6 years. That just leaves Bryan Singer to decide if he's going to be the one churning out the shitty x-film every 2-6 years.

I would love a Dark Phoenix Saga movie (or movies) done right. They have been doing this subpar Carrie or the like in the previous movies. Completely agree Bob! I really want to see more of X-23, and not in a PG rated X-MEN movie, she need's to be R rated to do her justice (something that took several movies to get right with Logan) and doing some time manipulation to get her there might work. As far as her being in a Deadpool movie anytime soon...i dunno, she need's to grow a bit more on screen to be able to fit i think. Gotta say though, Jackman has done Logan proud, going out on a high...or low, depending how you want to see it. Great film, by everyone involved!

Hadn't considered X-force, maybe that's what Deadpool could lead too, an X-force R-rated movie like the action films of the 80's/90's but not as cheesy. Hell we already have some character development for Wade, X-23 and (in Deadpool 2) Cable and Domino, and Cable's time travel shenanigans would be able to bring X-23 and anyone other DoFP characters in...only problem is who's the big bad to really give them a good fight?

Just rewatched this for the first time since it came out, and decided to check out old reviews. It's actually fascinating to compare this movie to The Last Jedi, which has many of the same beats, and to see how much better the execution is here. I think the main difference is that Logan, while initially refusing the call to adventure, still *goes*, albeit grudgingly, and we can see his progression throughout the movie. Imagine, however, if Logan had just stubbornly stayed with his crappy limo job *for the entire movie*, ignoring Laura's pleas for help the entire time, only to suddenly make an about face in the last ten minutes or so! THAT'S the Last Jedi...and that's why it's a betrayal of the fundamental Heroism of Luke's character. Had he been allowed to leave with Rey, still complaining, but we SEE him belying those words with his still heroic actions, the movies' message would have been much better delivered, and fans would have been happy by getting to actually see him in action one last time...

I know what the X-verse could do next. Like Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan were both good actors playing roles that were practically made for them... in a franchise best known for mediocrity. There it is: a movie about Prof-X and Magneto, perhaps finally resolving their life-long differences and becoming friends again for one last pivotal struggle. Their tragic friendship was one of many strong points of X-Men First Class. If done right, I'd watch the shit out of that. "Eric... in my life I've never had a better friend, or a more formidable adversary. It's been an honour." "And a privilege, Charles."

3 1/2 Stars? Wow... dammed by faint praise maybe? C'mon Bob, this is a watershed moment in Comic book film adaptation and by any standard, it makes all the other Superhero movies look like kids stuff. That the studio [Fox] agreed to release an R-rated Wolverine movie that really doesn't hold back it in itself worthy of praise but the film as a whole is something beyond mere entertainment and visual spectacle. Personally, I think this is a 5 out of 4 star film for a multitude of reasons - the incredible performances of Hugh Jackman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant and break out new star Dafne Keen, the brilliant and true to life brutally realistic fight scenes, the ennui of Logan and Xavier, all of it... it's worth more than 3 1/2 stars. Even you on your own channel posted a video declaring that this film should never be remade which indicates that this is a special piece of culture and as such deserves to stand alone.

I'm not so sure I want the X movie rights in Disney's hands. I just can't see them doing the naughtier aspects of the comics like the Logan/Jean/Scott love triangle, Rogue's intense frustration from no physical intimacy, and don't get me started on foulmouthed Deadpool and BDSM Emma Frost. Yeah idk about the whole X-23 being a good role model for empowerment. My viewing was that she was raised as a weapon and now has to come to terms that violent badassery only leads to pain and isolation, and that it’s only through mentoring and the introduction of empathy that she’s able to grow. I feel like she’s more of an allegory for children soldiers and their reintegration to a sense of a stable community, and not necessarily a cool new R-rated child super hero. (To be fair though I did love her action scenes)

I'm just wondering what the X-Men movies will do next after this. The First Class cast only has a 90s set movie before the somehow turn into the Original cast, Logan is set only 12 years from now and 6 years from the good future ending of DoFP which doesn't leave much time for the Original cast. Maybe something with the X-23 kids?

As far as where to take the X-Men franchise, they've never really bothered with much continuity so really you could make any kind of story. Like, oh, I dunno. A real X-Men story that's actually about Xavier's dream of peaceful coexistence. Every time that comes up in any of these movies I get emotionally involved until it gets all wrapped up in standard superhero stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I don't consider the x-men films works of genius or anything, but, apart from Origins: Wolverine, I think all of the films have their various charms. I still find the weird continuity errors and the slow/never aging of the prequel characters very annoying and distracting, though. Would it have been that damn hard to keep a record of how old each character is meant to be at each film/year and make them look how old they're meant to look?! Even Wolverine looks like he's in his late 40's, then early 30's then his 40's, again.

The first two X-Men flicks were great. Or at least really good. First Class was good, but I don't get Bob here, I'm not sure what puts that in a higher category than 1 and 2. I don't even really remember it. I'd certainly rather sit through any of those films again than half the predictable schlock marvel puts in theaters. Like, according to Bob something like Dr Strange is a better movie.... I could genuinely hardly sit through that predictable, arbitrary, iron-man-but-with-pretend-sparkly-magic snore fest. The X men movies at least have a spark of intellectualism - believable social struggles, meta commentary on the individual vs society, a semi-plausible and interesting sci fi world. Great actors. I don't get it Bob...

@Orion Burns Colorful yellow costumes instead of black leather, jazzy 60's James Bond tone and feel for some of the Xavier and Magneto stuff, basically the same reason he shits on the Nolan Batman films in retrospect when he was very much drooling all over The Dark Knight in his review of the film. For my money, First Class was only ever partly good. Xavier was good, Magneto was fantastic, back when the filmmakers didn't have to worry about giving him the same goddamn character arc in every film. Mystique and Hank were an admirable attempt to give these two very notable X-Men characters more material than they got in the Signer movies...and then you get to the actual X-Men team...which was woefully underused. This is where the movie kinda falls apart. Banshee, Angel Salvatore, Havoc and poor Darwin, these are characters that never got a chance because the filmakers were too busy making sure those Xavier and Magneto origins story movies finally got made and "oh well, I guess we have to fit an actual "X-Men" in there somewhere because otherwise it might tank". The villains, except for Kevin Bacon of course, were all disposable. I don't even like Emma Frost as a character but they still managed to waste her with January Jones. There's a reason literally every character I mentioned in the negative got killed off in the subsequent films and the only one that got any fanfare at all was the one that happened to be Scott Summer's older brother.

OK, seriously, it's about time you realize how much you are exaggerating just how bad Andrew Garfeild, and at least the first Amazing Spider-Man film was. I'm a lifelong, die hard Spidey fan myself, and I don't see how there isn't things to appreciate about Andrew and the first Amazing film. Honestly, after you wrote a three part piece gushing over Sam Raimi, and then making a video about how thinking Spider-Man 3 is bad is wrong over on the Escapist, I'm inclined to believe that you are really just an uber Raimi fanboy kinda salty his franchise with Spidey was ended prematurely. I mean, I love Raimi too for making one of my most beloved film franchises ever (Evil Dead), but just be freaking honest about your bias instead of disguising it in a rather arrogant way about how much you allegedly know better. The jabs have gotten beyond petty at this point so you're not fooling anyone.

I have been a huge comic book fan since the 70's and I still am!!! I never thought I would see the characters that I read about in the comics come onto the big screen, but its been amazing to see these characters but it may sound ungrateful but that's only because I was a fan way before these characters were even considered for the big screen, but their have been some really bad movies adapted from the comics, a lot of mistakes and also characters completely altered from their comic persona. I think Hugh Jackman is a fine actor but for me he was cast wrong to play the Wolverine right from the beginning. It doesn't help that he himself admitted he knew nothing about the character from the comics and he only took the time to read up on the character when he made Wolverine Origins (how inaccurate was that film). Wolverine is a small stocky guy, covered in hair, a feral type and he was also wild animal traumatized from the treatment that made him who he was. Yet in the X-Men franchise and the separate Wolverine movies he's played by a 6'1 Hugh Jackman who looks more pumped up in Wolverine Origins which is set before X-Men 1 and when he's in X-Men 1 looks half the size??. Then he has always looked like he's been strategically shaved to show muscle definition, yet the true look of the Wolverine is much more animistic. The Wolverine Origins was a disaster and 90% wasn't accurate to the comics. Now I may come across as I believe the term is 'fan boy' or just to geeky, but comics for me in the 70's, 80's were somewhere I could immerse myself into and forget about all the crap stuff that was I going through as a kid, so its important the stories of these characters are done right and along with other comic book movies a lot have been created inaccurately. Why don't they get someone in to produce and then direct a comic book movie from a stand point that they know what they are doing!!..

He clearly wants to praise it purely as a subversion of itself ("You're going to be disappointed"; see also The Last Jedi) but I think most people just thought it was awesome at face value because R-rated Wolverine at last, interesting, less action-schlock story with Jackman and Patrick Stewart, X-23, post-apocalypse and morose tone (I mean, I am capital-S sick of the downbeat Walking Dead style setting at this point, but I can't hold it against the movie) And again, sendoff for Jackman who's clearly earned it by this point. He's reluctantly praising it because he doesn't like the film series. He did the same thing for Days of Future Past. Which makes one wonder, will he change his mind and call Logan a bad movie in a few years?

This movie was fantastic. This would be a fitting end to the whole X-Men universe. Create a new continuity with Legion, any upcoming TV shows, Deadpool and New Mutants. If this is the film that new X-Men films pick up from, I don't want Marvel to get their hands on X-Men. Bob, how can you not see where these movies go from here? They with the Xavier/Magneto dichotomy being replaced by Laura (are we calling her Wolverine?) and kid Magneto (right? The kid who lifted the car who is ambiguously psychic or magnetic?) as they try to forge a new mutant community up north. This movie is how you reboot a franchise!!! Can we get a teen drama where the family dynamics fall apart and the kids drift away from each other as they mature into adults? If we must do trilogies, this would be the first trilogy. And then the sequel trilogy would be Wolverine's X-Men as they work against nefarious threats as they try eke out an existence to convince the world that they deserve equal rights and not to be treated like weapons to be aimed. -- and then we have the Fantastic Four to give us cosmic stuff where we see what happens on other marvel planets where the X gene was wiped out.

Do not actually blindly take your kids to this movie unless you've already given up on taking responsibility for their development. Gore-wise they could probably handle it, but it's phenomenally violent and transmits feelings of aggression, bloodlust and hatred in the total absence of mature, healthy and constructive conflict resolution or it's conviction to challenge the cycle of violence. They may also find it unsettling and distressing in parts, depending on their age. The awe of seeing Laura be awesome would be the one pro, which I advise on balance is probably not worth it,

Where to go with the X-men... so, the 'prequel' trilogy always skips about a decade between each one. First class: 60's, Days of Future Past: 70's, Apocalypse: 80's. And then... the original X-men movies, in the 90's. So they've 'caught up' so to speak. I'd say that, with the movie Logan seemingly ending on a very bleak note from what little I've heard (haven't seen, obviously), that now is the best time for a franchise reboot. Use Deadpool as a springboard for it. That version of Colossus never existed before that movie, same with Negasonic Teenage Warhead (still the coolest fucking name ever). Use that as a new x-men universe to go off into a more light-hearted, more comic-book friendly version. Not saying that they should all be comedies or R rated, no, but it would be a good restart point, and it not only already has laid groundwork for it, but has a kick ass movie to start it, and a fan base that would eat it up. And the best time for that is right now. Let the old actors go, they're older now, many of them have moved on. ....y'know, that, or play ball with marvel like Sony and fucking include them in the MCU post-Thanos. Somehow... Marvel's smart, they'll figure it out somehow.

That the early X-Men movies were average is not a commonly held view. Most people loved them, especially 2. DoFP is also highly regarded. So the movie studio's calculus was likely a hell of a lot different to what Bob's describing since his views are decidedly minority - hell, if they were commonly held then there probably wouldn't be an X-Men universe at all and Logan wouldn't have been made. You can say that they haven't held up well and I'd agree with you - I just don't think it matters.
