CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Marty (Ernest Borgnine) is broken up when Clara (Betsy Blair) won't give him a kiss good night, but she explains that she does like him very much.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Paddy Chayefsky's Oscar-winning slice-of-life drama originated as a live 1953 broadcast directed by Delbert Mann on The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse starring Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand. The Hecht-Lancaster movie version, also directed by Mann, replaces the two leads with Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair (as well as featuring several soon-to-be-familiar faces, including Jerry Paris, Frank Sutton, and Karen Steele, plus Joe Mantell, Nehemiah Persoff, and Betsy Palmer from the TV version). But it remains otherwise intact, telling of 24 very important hours in the lives of two lonely people. Marty is a bittersweet, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, and always realistic comedy-drama about Marty Pilletti (Ernest Borgnine), a 34-year-old Bronx butcher. Approaching middle-age as a burly, somewhat overweight man who has no illusions about himself or his attractiveness to women, Marty looks forward to just one thing in life -- buying his boss's butcher shop and trying to make a success in business -- and he's even uncertain about that. A gentle, good-natured man, he lives with his mother (Esther Minciotti), a kind but emotionally smothering woman, in a too-large house and spends his time a small circle of dead-end friends (Joe Mantell, Frank Sutton). One Friday night, Marty's mother convinces him to go to the Stardust Ballroom, where he meets a plain-looking schoolteacher named Clara (Betsy Blair), whose life appears to mirror his own -- she lives with her father, and is frightened about the one prospect she has for advancement in her job. Meeting her after witnessing a humiliating rejection by her blind date, Marty acts on his best impulses and asks Clara to dance, and soon they are actually enjoying each other's company. She is as drawn to him as he is to her, but both are so uncertain about putting themselves at risk emotionally, that the evening almost ends badly when he tries to kiss her -- but they agree to go to talk on the phone and go to a movie the next night. But whatever good feelings he has about Clara are soon threatened by his friends' put-downs of her, and his mother's hostility, driven by her sudden panic that if Marty marries, she'll be left living alone. Marty spends the next day alone and never does call Clara, seemingly having decided that it's best to leave well enough alone. That is, until he takes a good long look at his life, and a listen to his friends -- and he suddenly makes the decision to try for true happiness, wherever it leads.

This movie is so sweet. Clara and Marty are the kind of people anyone would want to be with, or just have as company. They’re vulnerable, honest and gentle without trying to hard with each other. Their interactions are natural, it’s refreshing to see two shy people slowly become comfortable and crawl out of their shells.

It's amazing how much awkwardness and confusion can be avoided if both people just say what they are feeling and why, but that's not the way it usually is. Everything has to be guessed at, has to be risked in order to prove yourself. As it should be, for most people most of the time. Most of the time.

Young women don't seem to be looking for men that are regular standup up solid guys. Today's make up make women unrecognizable after they take it off. For a regular guy, what you see is what you get. I could always date women, but could never keep them, do the best I could to treat them right until they were done with me. Found a woman in another state when a buddy and I went to Cleveland for the 4th of July. Moved there and took a job, not knowing what may happen..27 years and 4 children later, we're still together. I'm a blue collar guy who moved up to a white-collar job, so I've done ok. Bless her, she's hung in there with me. Just like in Marty.

It’s very similar to what I did the first time I asked out a girl She said yes and I was very happy, I remember so well how as soon as I was out of the building and knew she couldn’t hear my excitement, I let out this triumphant shout, just straight up “YES!!!” Some random guys were sitting at the front of the school, asked why I was so excited, all I give them is “SHE SAID YES!!!” and they start laughing but I don’t even care I’m too happy Fist pumping the whole way home, one of my friends sees me as he drives by so he slows down and asks what’s up, I say “I ASKED OUT THAT GIRL, SHE SAID YES!!!” and with a big grin he says “LETS GOOOO!!!” Text my dad what happened, he’s happy for me Text my other friend what happened, she’s happy for me Then I went home, told my sister what happened, so happy, so excited, can’t wait for the date “She’s lying to you” My sister and I weren’t the closest since she got into her teenage years and we’d become increasingly distant But that one hurt, so little faith in me, in this girl, that with one simple sentence, my confidence, my excitement, my happiness, destroyed

That kind of man can have almost any woman he wants nowadays: easy, like nothing. And they fight over him. Anyway, that's my experience. 😉 P.S. Shame has its uses, but 45 years? In our lives, there can be the Spirit and the Flesh. Quite a few people forget about the former altogether, some manage 50-50, and - since being Born Again a couple of years ago (though I never expected it), I can do a LOT of spiritual life. But I am not quite free of lust, and very, very few of us are. This is the Earth, and we can be earth(l)y. It is wrong, but we ask God to forgive us with a contrite heart and we have a real chance of forgiveness; and then - truly - we put that matter behind us and live on, better than we were before. God even forgave Saul-Paul, who was a persecutor of Christians and maybe even a murderer. And after that he was filled with the Spirit, as am I. Ask for that. Above all, never believe that you are too tainted to be of interest to God and His mercy. You are not.

Marty put a *lot* of weight on this poor girl's shoulders in the few hours he's known her. Constant sob stories, a real downer, even talking suicide by subway train. I know he didn't have much girl experience (if any) but you gotta know enough not to lay all that grief down. That being said there's nothing I can't watch the great Ernest Borgnine in, true legend.

Within the confines of the film at least, he was being truthful. Love and truth go hand in hand, thanks be to God. She could either help him carry his Cross, or not. He wanted to find out and cut to the chase with honesty. Perhaps he was a bit selfish, but he needed to bare his soul.

That’s how they did it in the movies, still do now to a lesser extent. Ever see the old b&w Rebecca? Big part of the plot is how plain Joan Fontaine’s lead character is supposed to be. Joan Fontaine was a knockout beauty, and she is in the movie too, just isn’t dolled up. (Haven’t seen it, but they recently did a Rebecca remake with Lilly James in that role. She’s one of the most beautiful women on earth. If they keep to the same plot it’s going to look pretty ludicrous. If she’s plain Everest is a boulder.)

I didn’t catch it, was it pearl clutching about male entitlement or him not having his consent forms properly co-signed?

Idiomatic phrase, he means a kiss as if it’s no big deal

Don’t know if this was before or after the dance scene when he tells her she’s no beauty and seriously hits on her self esteem more or less telling her they’re both rejects - I don’t know why she’d waste her time on this guy. Better to stay single. He needs to go to charm school.

Meh...I think he made a truly honest mistake and she recognized he was still very much a decent man. Not retconning an all time classic.

He actually did get a kiss, not shown in this clip. A bit later, when they were both ready.
