I like how 0:41 to 0:46 shows that Beowulf cares about his men and is enraged that the dragon would kill them so brutally.

They are his retainers, in the original text as I can vaguely remember, it has been explained the relationship bewteen retainers and their thane, that's a very honorable and closed one. But in the dragon fighting part, twelve retainers fled away from the battle, only one brave enough stayed and helped him to defeat the dragon.

I think it how's personal growth with Beowulf tbh. In the beginning, Grenfell bites the head of one of Beowulfs thanes and kids several others and Beowulf couldn't care less. Now you see the dragon killing dozens of Beowulfs men and it clearly bothers him.

@TacSon good way to put it. I think a good scene in the film is where he goes: "You think you're the first to try to kill me, or the 100th, hmm?" He's had so many assassination attempts, he's probably killed many people he's just sick of it.

You can see the fire because as he is diving into the depth pressure of the sea he is holding his breath, and some does come out anyway as a result, mostly, exhaling before next inhaling when going back out of the water. And his very breath is fire.

@Jeremiah Pheasant Only in our modern view of over-analytical study of things. Dragons in myth never held any real defining features, and had a wide range of limb configurations from none to nearly a dozen. Same with the number of wings or even heads. Dragon and serpent in norse myth were interchangeable, and some of the first dragons depicted in art in the middle ages were what we modern turbo nerds would call Wyverns.
@Ned-nw6ge
@Ned-nw6ge 4 жыл бұрын
Plus the original Smaug had four legs.
@dylantennant6594
@dylantennant6594 4 жыл бұрын
@Jeremiah Pheasant Funny you should say that, as Nordics have many different ideas about what a dragon looks like. You have the wyvern, as you stated. There’s also the lindworm, a wingless dragon that doesn’t breath fire (poison actually) and is essentially just a snake with a pair of claws. And ring wyrms, fire breathing lizards that were once dwarfs corrupted by greed and corrupted by greed. This what Fafnir is. So yeah saying Smaug looks like an actually dragon does not make sense, as even the Norse, who were a major inspiration for Tolkien, couldn’t get an idea of what a dragon looked like.

The dragon in the original poem was described as having wings, and being 50 feet long, but surprisingly, no mention was ever made of how many legs it had. Dragons with 2 wings and 4 legs were actually very rare in art before the year 1400. In ancient times dragons often went around with no legs, and throughout most of the middle ages dragons with 2 legs and 2 wings were one of the most commonly depicted types.

I don't mean to sound like an odd person, but I feel that the best feature about this dragon is the wing design. The reason I say this is because in most films, books, and other things, the dragons just have a bat wing design (four fingers connected by membrane and one claw on the wing). I understand that the wings of this dragon are basically the same as that but at least they did something that really hasn't been done before. What I mean by this is that if you look at the wings they have 2 free fingers and 3 fingers connected by membrane. That may sound weird but that is just my personal opinion.

I wonder if the dragons tail in this scene, while in the water, has any ‘connection’ to the mermaid earlier on in the movie? considering her tail had a similar appearance, with its leaflike shape. It could be that Beowulf’s son had certain features based not only on his personality (which was: powerful, ambitious and strong. Like how Grendel was gross and slimy, his genes were based on his own fathers ‘soul’) but maybe other factors deciding it’s apperance, were things like Beowulf’s experiences, things he had seen/been through while on adventures, but then again, if that were the case, the design of the dragon would have had more features similar to characters shown previously, like the sea monsters or something? Idk. Or mayyyyybeeee it’s a trait he inherited from his mother??? the mermaid could have been her, grendels mum, perhaps? They are both water demons/creatures, after all, and Grendels mum could have shape shifted to look like an attractive women in order seduce Beowulf. Actually, I always wondered about that scene, watching it when I was younger, I’d always gotten the impression that they’d had sex, but then that never made sense because it would have been physically impossible, unless she shapeshifted (but then that would have made it too obvious to audiences that it was actually grends mum, I think). Mayyyyybeeeee the ‘mermaid’ didn’t even have sex with Beowulf, anyway, but rather, she could have somehow put a spell on him to “seek ‘glory’ by slaying Grendel” (actually, in mythology, sirens (mermaids) are capable of mind control, and grends mum defo does has this power, she made the previous king kill himself after all by jumping to his death) Maybe her plan had been to have another child all along? Even if she was sad from grendels death, she was probs weirded out from having such a gross kid anyway and wanted a new one. Annnnnnd the reason why she picked Beowulf was because he proved his strength in the battle against the sea monsters. Buuuut she wanted him near her land/territory, becauuuuuse she wants the men that rule there under her thumb, so that there will never be an attack on her land (this could be proven at the end of Beowulf, where she’s clearly about to seduce the new KING with red hair, she wants the men ShE cOnTrOls In PoWeR, she did warn Grendel not to “kill man” after all, she always feared them attacking her territory, and that’s why she picks who she picks, with it comes protection. She has children with them, because she knows now that they’d never attack without the risk of there child’s identity being revealed, she’s blackmailing them, and then when they get old, she kills them. (Like maybe the reason the dragon attacked wasn’t because she sent for him to have revenge on grendels death, but just because he was gonna die soon anyway and she wanted some fresh meat on the throne, the reason I don’t think it was for revenge, is because at the end you can see her kissing Beowulf. She never hated him. And also because why then? Why wait until Beowulf’s all old? Why not just have her son, and then once she had what she wanted, kill him? Its because for the entire movie shes been playing everyone like puppets in her little game, and she will continue to play it, for all EtErNiTyYyYyYyYyYyYyYy

I must say - that I hate the fact that too many movies, books etc portray dragons to be evil characters. There is so much more to them than that. Especially if you are super interested in the lore and history of dragons. Most of it is positive, powerful, inspiring, and actually good. Not evil. Dragons accordingly to lore are only ferocious killers when it comes to their enemies. I wish there were more stories out there that represent all the amazing & good things about dragons. And yes I know there is far more to the Beowulf story. But for anyone who simply just watches this clip. It certainly doesn’t represent the dragon very well.
