It's not a "hiss" exactly, it's retronasal tasting. Wine tasting involves the nose, the tongue, and retronasal passage. When a sommelier slurps wine, it is to smell the aromas of the warmed wine that is in the mouth. This technique is "retronasal breathing." When a sip of wine is in the mouth, a gentle inhale (usually through pursed lips) over the wine allows subtle aromas to be "tasted" by olfactory cells as the aroma passes through the retronasal passage in the back of the throat up to the sinus cavity. It can be a noisy technique, but quite effective.

The famous "hssssss" sound made by Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) during his story about eating a liver with "fava beans and a nice Chianti" to FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) wasn't in the original script. Apparently it was something Hopkins did during rehearsals to creep out Foster - and Demme decided leaving it in was the best way to creep out his audience too.

MrParkerman6 They’ve literally discussed this in interviews. Do you not think actors interact with each other during scenes? You don’t build that type of chemistry between characters by only pairing them with cameras. And don’t question my knowledge of this movie: it’s a GOLDMINE of fun facts like this. One of my favorites apart from this one is in regards to the later iconic scene of Clarice talking about the night she ran away. Her delivery was captivating, and a crew member in the back dropped a wrench, but she kept going (you can hear the wrench in older releases of the film, but not newer ones). Following the director yelling “cut”, she whipped around and asked “what the hell was that” to the offending crew member. I know this movie like the back of my hand.

Fun fact: Anthony adlibbed the southern accent as he felt it would be more degrading. What he did not know was that Jodi is in fact southern. The scene after this of her crying at the car is real, she was that hurt as she thought Anthony did it intentionally. When Anthony found out what happened he was so ashamed and apologetic that he wanted the scene reshot and the dialog removed. Jodi wanted it kept in as she agreed with Anthony's idea that a character like Lector really would be that insulting. Anthony and Jodi to this day are still friends after this.

ljqueen McAwsome Haha, I imagine it more like an intense metronome of wits and analyzing and mental prying. It'd be sort of amazing (and probably humbling) to see
@dantealiv377710 жыл бұрын
Sherlock would prove to be the more intelligent but ultimately his self-arrogance would lead to a slip. Even if you can outsmart him never underestimate the insanity of a mad man. Though benedict cumberpatch ( = best Sherlock ever) would fight hannibal to the end and in true fashion of Sherlock Holmes v. Moriarty or (the new adaption) Holmes v. Charles Magnussen would bring him down with him. The only fitting end to an encounter between these two great characters.
@nicholasgrabill7649 жыл бұрын
Hannibal is Charles Magnusen plus manners, so much insanity he appears sane, 200+ IQ and a flair for fine dining. He isn't just above sherlocks level he controls it.
@codylakin2889 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Grabill Very well said, really! I think Sherlock would stand quite a chance, but his conscience would be his weakness, whereas Hannibal would probably pinpoint every weakness he has and play upon it like music. And ironic you compare him to Magnusen, not only as that's a great comparison, but also Magnusen is played by Mads Mikkelson's brother, and Mads plays Hannibal in the show!

I got a chance to work for onstar for 2 years as a customer service representative. I got a chance to talk to 2 celebrities, sandra bullock and sir anthony hopkins. I was so nervous when i was talking to him but his voice is so calm like it's just a casual conversation. When I'm done helping him he asked me what he can do in return. I told him it's not necessary but he insisted, so i ask him if he can do this scene just the dialogue for the census guy. He did and it gave me goosebumps. Unforgettable moment.

A sure sign of a great movie is how easily quotable it is, and Silence of the Lambs has many. "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti" is a case in point.

There is so much brilliant cinematography going on here to make this scene so unsettling. First off, the camera angle is often close up on Hopkins, making him seem much more intimately dangerous. You might also notice that Hopkins rarely blinks throughout the conversation and keeps his head tilted down, which is a gesture subconsciously viewed as threatening. Most especially, Foster often looks just slightly away from the camera, but Hopkins often stares directly into the camera, and by extension the viewer. It's a "perfect storm" designed to overwhelm the senses and give the viewer the feeling of being prey trapped under a predator's watchful eye - and it works delightfully.

The thing which scares me the most about this film is that fact that Lector is sane and calm man. He is not insane or weird he is.. sane.
@Schoolgirl32510 жыл бұрын
He's hardly sane, he's a brilliant sociopath but not a schizophrenic. He has awareness of the world around him, but he still ate people.

He is sane. He is a psychopath, which is very different than being insane.

Schoolgirl325 actually, he's not a psychopath. That's just what they call him because they don't know what he is. He doesn't fit in any psychological illness definition. Maybe narcissistic personality disorder.

There are moments of pure genius in acting, this is one of them, from both of these actors. Anthony Hopkin's performance is one of the most amazing pieces of acting one could ever witness. I can think of the time watching Jack Nicholson in 'The Shinning' as another glimpse of the virtuosity of this marvelous craft.

This was the character at its definitive. They definitely played up the idea that he was attracted to Starling, but it presented itself more in his twisted desire to toy with her emotionally, rather than him stalking her like in the sequel.
