I love this scene. It really shows how he's clearly a sociopath but confronted with his actual ideals he can't possibly tell a lie because the urge to burn things is so strong with him. Absolutely phenomenal acting and writing

Donald Sutherland did an incredible job of showing the darkeness inside of us. And think about it-IRRC he only gets about 5 minutes of screen time in the entire movie yet he is a pivotal character in Backdraft.

It's something very akin to what Anthony Hopkins did in Silence of the lambs... A criminal helping catching other criminal, while he plays mind games with the main character, all in a short but memorable apparition.

"it's not fair,Shadow" That look on Ronald's face; like he's controlling himself, controlling everything, that' s how he stands up. But if you tickle him at the spot where he is sensible, he's gonna crack in front of everyone, and it's awful. They think it's a man in front of them, but it's not. It's been a very long time he's not a man anymore. It's like a black hole, and if you're not careful, it's gonna jump right to your face?

Why is de Niro's character the only one who can get Ronald to say this?
@Mark-yn4vl6 жыл бұрын
He trusts "Shadow". Maybe because Shadow saved his life. Also Ronald is criminally insane so he has strange ways of thinking. Maybe he respects Shadow because he considers Shadow a worthy adversary and therefore in his own twisted way, is honest with him.

I highly doubt he'd have to come back the next year after the perole board just heard him say how he still wants to burn the whole world while giggling like a complete lunatic! But then again we're talkin' about the American justice system. So it would probably be in his best interest to keep coming back.

Oh come on Ronald, what would you like to do with the whole world" I'd like to reenter society and do good things to make up for my terrible crimes. Hey parole board, can you get this uninvited psycho out of my face please? Yes, we're sorry Ronald. Please leave the room guy holding a burnt doll who wasn't invited. Parole approved Mr. Ronald. @itwontcomeout56786 жыл бұрын
" *You wanna know how I got these scars?* You see, my father was a fire man. Not a firefighter-- a man who loved to play with fire. A bit of a... _pyromaniac,_ if you will. He secretly started fires across this entire city in the 70s and 80s. One night he came home and lit our own house on fire... Set it up so the entire hallway became a living, breathing fireball. Mother was still asleep, and never woke up again. I smelled smoke and tried to open my bedroom door... The door frame collapsed right onto my face. My father landed himself in jail for the rest of his life, getting denied parole every single year... Until I had a firebomb planted in his prison cell block a few years ago. You see, some men seek vengeance, some men seek righteousness... *and some men just want to see the world burn.* "

Let's pretend for a moment that this parole hearing is not for Ronald... but instead for that poor black woman in Florida (Marissa Alexander). I can only image what kind of loaded questions the board would ask her and what kind of answers she would have to give in order to save her a$$ and just get back to her children: Parole board: Do you regret your crime and understand that you were a threat & danger to society?? Alexander: Yes, I promise to never get scared and defend myself shooting a wall again. Give me a break!!

Her kids were in the danger space, honey.

Well her "warning shot" was more of a missed shot which is why it was in the wall behind the guy she missed. But 20 years seemed a bit much given the circumstances which is why she got out in 5.
