CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Despite Stephen's (Kurt Russell) warning, Tim (Jason Gedrick) gets burned by a backdraft and taken away on a stretcher.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The sons of a Chicago fireman who gave his life in the performance of his duties, firefighting brothers Kurt Russell and William Baldwin carry their lifelong sibling rivalry into their work. Russell is convinced that Baldwin hasn't got what it takes to remain in the fire department. Baldwin is transferred to a "safe" assignment, assisting arson investigator Robert DeNiro, who is trying to make sense of a series of fires involving an oxygen-induced ball of fire called a backdraft. The investigation reveals a link between corrupt alderman J. T. Walsh and imprisoned pyromaniac Donald Sutherland. The trail of evidence leads Baldwin to suspect that his brother Russell, a much-decorated hero, may be the "inside" man setting up the arsons.

This movie has always been difficult to watch. When I was 14, we had a gas explosion in our home. My, then 12 year old brother, was caught in the blast. The ambulances took my brother and my parents and I was left to watch my house burn, standing in the street holding my cat. I watched firefighters going into the house while an inferno raged. It was the fire marshall who realized I was all alone and helped me. I will always view firefighters like our soldiers...the bravest men on earth.

Oddly enough, when I was 9, I watched this movie and it scared me so much that we had our copy destroyed. Why was I watching a movie rated PG-13 when I was that young? My father rented it from CEX (think of it like a British Blockbuster but mainly selling electronics ala Circuit City and the movies are all second-hand) and I popped it into my laptop DVD Player as I wanted to be a firefighter when I was younger. That quickly changed when I realised how prone firefighters are to things like lung cancer and some of the worst deaths on a job that you can have. The scene that got me wasn't this one but instead the one in what I remember being a movie theatre or a church or something where a guy opens a cupboard and the camera shows a backdraft coming right at the camera.

The movie unfairly frames the backdraft as being caused by a mistake, real backdrafts are more often caused when the structure degrades and creates a new inlet for the atmosphere. There are signs of possible backdraft conditions (hot doors not being one because everything is hot), and you could try to ventilate the room from the highest point where escaping smoke pushes against the atmosphere, but there's never a guarantee in a failing structure.

I have a friend who is a volunteer firefighter near where I live. He told me the story of a time he responded to an alarm at a house. He was the first on scene. He smelt a little smoke but not too much. He went down to the basement, and opened the door and a ton of black smoke and flames lept at him. Fortunately, he was able to close the door before he ended up like Tim. He told me “The lesson: never open the basement door without checking for heat first.”

It could just be a plot hole, but I feel like that's Stephen's reckless way of coping with what happened to their dad. Either because he's angry and wants to tempt fate, or because he wants to prove to himself that he's better than his old man--even better than the fire itself--because he can expose himself and still be untouchable. Notice, if I'm remembering right, that he's the only character who routinely does this in the movie. He's also an alcoholic, and has torn his family apart due to his inability to cope with his trauma. I think his recklessness is intentional.

The only line I ever remembered from this film (watching it as a child 24 years ago), was "Check that door for heat?" ...and the backdraft itself. Nothing before or after. Scared me for weeks. Still makes me nauseous. ...Though, watching this scene now, I chuckled at how post-fire "Tim" looks almost exactly like Vader, when Luke removes his mask: "Now go, my brothers. Leave me---" "No, I'll not leave you here, Tim. You're coming with us. We've got to save you!" "You already have...dude. You were right about the door. Tell the others, you were right..."

That one scene in I think a movie theater or something got me so badly that we destroyed our copy of the film. Re-watching it today, I have no idea why. Watching it now does bring out some visceral instinctive fear but nothing like it did back then. Something similar happened when I watched the Towering Inferno for equally weird reasons. Why I watched films rated PG-13 at age 9 I don't goddamn know. The scene from that film that got me wasn't Bigelow and his mistress burning to death or any of the other deaths but that one scene where the firefighters ascend a staircase only for it top explode behind them and one goes "ain't no going back that way" or something similar.

@lovesyou25 a firefighters gear is just meant to repel the heat not to keep from catching on fire. If the suit takes on too much heat then it can catch on fire, and a backdraft fire is really really hot so no chance on surviving one. I know this cause I'm taking fire classes and I'm in the fire academy haha :p

If the heat is enough to ignite your bunker/turnout gear then you're probably already dead. The heat from a flashover event (the temp which is hot enough to cause an entire room to auto-ignite) is about 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. If even a few percents of that heat penetrates through the your bunker gear's material and through the tiny gaps between your gear (which it definitely does), then you're cooked within seconds.

I feel that feeling when theres nothing you can do. Ive worked in forensics... to try to find answers after the fact. And its hard to look at every inch of detail and wait weeks for labs to make a forensic determination on our side. Ive had the hardest time with my family after work that I cannot talk about this evidence because it is crucial and could comprise the case.

People always talk about the weirdness of Tim's behaviour but no one's gonna address the other firefighters? When Stephen leaves the room, there are clearly other firefighters present but they did nothing to protect a colleague? Didn't even call out?

What's crazy is that Axe stated earlier in the movie that Tim has a ''hideous pair of ears'', it was clear then that Tim does not listen. Also, I wonder why when this movie is aired, the scene when Bull writes up the report for Rimgale about this fire is omitted. ''Tim went to the fire, and now he doesn't have a face. Now I gotta get some sleep...''

Engine 51, and yeah Tim didn’t follow simple instructions when Stephen clearly told him to check a door for heat before opening it, he made the same mistake Darden did from Chicago Fire, him and Casey were outside the attic window and Casey literally told him to stand down and wait but he didn’t listen, he still took the window and went in anyway before Squad 3 can confirm that there was no vent! But neither of them deserved to get burnt of course…..

That's actually why it's called a backdraft. Smoke puffs out then is drawn back in due to the pressure differential, and is a big clue that the room is starved of oxygen.
