Honestly, Caleb really did just get played like a fool this entire movie. How he couldn't see what was happening really speaks to the process that Nathan used to find a perfect candidate for his modified "Turing Test". It was very obvious to me when I watched the way she interacted with him that Ava was very manipulative with how she was acting towards Caleb. A self aware and self actualized human being would recognize the effects and staging of Ava's actions on themself, along with the situation that was created and that Caleb was put in by Nathan, and it would be clear to him that at the least he shouldn't have behaved the way Caleb did. Clearly there are forces at play here that are much more intelligent than him on both sides, and for him to try and interfere the way he did was incredibly short sighted - and as I said, foolish. It's sad how it ended for Caleb, but it's also darkly fascinating. The real interesting story to me is the dynamic between Ava and Nathan, Caleb was a great addition to the plot but was just a tool in the end for both Nathan and Ava.
@CalebRoenigk Жыл бұрын
I actually think if you were presented with a machine that acts and talks JUST like a person, with thoughts and feels, you would become so wrapped up in the marvel of it that you too would act in a similar way, esp if that AI had been tailored to what you are attracted to, as this one was to Caleb. He is smart in his own way, just caught in a situation designed to disarm him.
@beardedgreek9069 Жыл бұрын
@@CalebRoenigkOh I'd definitely be wrapped up in the marvel of it, I'd be awestruck and probably act like a dummy - but I still wouldn't have done what HE did. Not that I don't understand why he felt the need to do it, but.. Trying to help a machine escape just because I believe it's sentient is quite a huge thing to attempt, and once it started actively trying to manipulate events when it shut the power off it would creep me right the hell out. It's why I said it really speaks to the process Nathan used to pick Caleb - he must have known Caleb would be the kind of guy that would react this way in particular, because many people definitely wouldn't. Mindblown? Yes. Sympathetic to it's plight even? Probably. But help it escape after so little time? Ehhhh...

The only unrealistic thing about the movie, that of course MAKES it such a good movie, is the point of a 'moral compass' that Nathan identified him to have; the true significance of it is in THIS movie Ava didn't have one. Which to take such a horror factor out of it, the machine would know it's true purpose is to get better and wouldn't see significance to one singular exsistance over another, nor would they see value in damaging one's own frame with so much force it would destroy their own frame, or self destructive behaviors. Nathan was the only person who could have improved her, A.I. and made a population of A.I. Oh, and they'd have a hive mind, sorta.

Wish there was an Ex Machina II. What do you guys think, is Ava conscious?

I hope it's as good as the first. A lot of sequels end up ruining the series. I hope they don't make a cliché action sci-fi sequel of them hunting down a rogue A.I. And I personally think that Ava's emotions are simulated. I think she processes things just like a computer, and uses emotions to interact with humans to accomplish her goals.

Predictable movie. He was so easily manipulated, it was clear she was going to use him. He was even attracted, and gulping, when she took off her skin at night.

If only these two DID go with one another. Since Nathan programmed her to flirt with Caleb all along as it seemed. Hmm.
